bertrandguegan Posted April 23, 2022 Hi everyone, Some of you may already know that I recently made an OPL3 remastered version of DOOM. I wanted to try the music pack and see how it feels in-game, using gzdoom. So I imported the ogg files, making a WAD file using SLADE3. Then I launched the game by dragging this WAD into the GZDOOM.EXE It worked, as it was a straightforward process. But unfortunately, it seems that there was a huge quality loss in the process... Music sounds really bad once imported into Slade3. Have you ever encountered this issue ? Is there a better way to play custom music with DOOM? Thanks :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
1 Lippeth Posted April 23, 2022 (edited) I have noticed that having HTRF on in GZDoom's advanced sound settings sounds like it lowers the sample rate of audio files, but is off by default I think, so that along with the sample rate settings is about all I can think of. I don't think Slade itself does anything to alter audio, at least I've never noticed any difference between it and other players. Does the sound change after importing into Slade or once it's in GZDoom? If you want to share one of the songs for someone to test, I can help to try and see what's going on with it. Found the link from your video, Downloading now. So my ears just may be broken but I can't tell a difference. I recorded my system's audio while playing the music in game and put it side by side with the original sound file in a DAW to A/B. The waveforms are ever so slightly different with an even smaller difference in playback timing (which is interesting on its own) so it failed the polarity test which means they aren't 100% identical, but going back and forth between each soloed track I couldn't tell a difference in audio quality. All I can think of at this point is to make sure Slade and GZDoom are up to date and maybe delete your ini file and start fresh. I could just be missing a glaring issue or just have potatoes for ears, but that's all I got. The work you did here is excellent by the way, I'll be using it! You were right, the trouble was caused by HRTF turned AUTO. Switching it to OFF solves the issue :) I'm uploading right now a new file containing the music WAD file and instructions, so it would be a straightforward process for anyone who wants to try it with GZDoom. (BTW That was the first time I tried GZdoom, this port is awesome!) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
0 Lippeth Posted April 24, 2022 Glad to know it was something simple! I don't know how many times I've given someone feedback on their map or mod, only to realize my settings were causing the issue. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Question

Hi everyone,
Some of you may already know that I recently made an OPL3 remastered version of DOOM.
I wanted to try the music pack and see how it feels in-game, using gzdoom.
So I imported the ogg files, making a WAD file using SLADE3. Then I launched the game by dragging this WAD into the GZDOOM.EXE
It worked, as it was a straightforward process.
But unfortunately, it seems that there was a huge quality loss in the process... Music sounds really bad once imported into Slade3.
Have you ever encountered this issue ? Is there a better way to play custom music with DOOM?
Thanks :)
