Cleimos and Cleimos 2 demos [-complevel 2]

I recorded a Cleimos II (cleim20) demopack (17 UV Max demos, 1 UV Speed demo). This may belong to the category of "recording demos on excellent old WADs which suffer from little demo activity" (cleim20 is from 1995), but also may prove Qaatar's point that I tend to choose certain kind of maps ("Maybe one of the more hardcore masochists on this forum would like to give it a shot? Vdgg seems like a prime candidate" -> about Jade Earth). Still, I skipped some maps, because they were no fun to record even for me :)

I didn't know about this wad until today, but I must say it's overall a nice mapset with excellent sky textures. Not all levels are good for serious recording, but the wad as a whole has enough action to be worth making demos for.

Some parts of Cleimos II are primitive and repetative, but some others are great. For example, I think MAP20 (which represents a more grim, more Doomish version of the famous episode) is a clever masterpiece, and it would be cool for speedy playing on difficulty levels higher than Ultra-Violence. Levels 7, 15, 19, 24 are also impressive and atmospheric.

I watched all your demos in the pack, and enjoyed them, especially CL24-646.

The idea recently has been to thin out the Misc. Thread and give individual threads to anything that has a decent amount of maps, is moderately notorious (Toilet of the Gods is a good example), or is expected to have more than a handful of posts. The reasons for this are a mixture of wanting Misc. to be more Misc. than "idk if I should make a thread for this so I'll just post it here", full threads seem to encourage more runs, and it ends up being more convenient for 4shock and the upload scripts.

Just wanted to explain why, since I know there's been a lot of splitting and merging going on recently.

*It is impossible to get 100% kills and secrets on this map. Unlike in its Cleimos 2 version, the three teleporters do not activate crushers and instead when you pick one of them, you block off the rest. Thus, there are three isolated ways to complete this map.
If you pick the eastern path, you can get 37/108 kills and 2/7 secrets.
If you pick the northern path, you can get 50/108 kills and 6/7 secrets.
If you pick the western path, you "can" get 75/108 kills and 1/7 secrets. However, there are 35 (!) barons, and shotgun is your most powerful weapon. No amount of infighting can help you, and you do not have enough shells. You do not get a berserk, so technically speaking, you can punch them all out, but that's probably limited to TAS runs. Unless I'm missing something crucial, and I don't think I do, the northern path (the one that I took in this demo) is the practical UV-Max for this map.

I am sure that 75/108 kills are possible, I will take a look at later :) That said, what is more "valuable", kills or secrets? Haha

I'd love to be proven wrong! As for what is considered more valuabe, I have no idea. I assumed that the kills are.

Sorry, nevermind, I made a couple of wrong assumptions. You have plasma gun but not really any ammo for it... Linedef skips, maybe? The map is not worth it anyway. Thanks for bringing this interesting point up (what is better, 50 kills and 6 secrets or 75 kills and 1 secret... what about 51 kills and 1 secret?)

I made an edit of that level to remove the triggers that make other paths inaccessible. I collected all the ammo the level had to offer, never picking up more than I had room for, and I was still left berserk punching most of the barons in that room and savescumming every few seconds. I'm pretty sure the only way it could have gone any better, other than not getting hit as much, would be if I managed to group up the barons better for rocket/BFG shots.

Eastern: 37/108 kills =  34% | 2/7 secrets = 28% | 34% + 28% = 62%/200%

Northern: 50/108 kills = 46% | 6/7 secrets = 85% | 46% + 85% = 131%/200%

Western: 75/108 kills = 69% | 1/7 secrets = 14% | 69% + 14% = 83%/200%

 

By this method northern is closest to max and hence the one I'd pick as well.

Found it quite funny how you can literally exit this level immediately with such a straightforward route, so I experimented a bit. Couldn't beat my third attempt after fifty further ones so here goes. I did attempt to maximize starting position by playing with the cursor in my later runs - not sure if that's illegal - but they still failed to be quicker than this. That was quite funny.

Can definitely be quicker if one utilizes SR50 but that's beyond my skill. Started as a proof of concept but became somewhat optimized.
