Bethesda, can you please add more replayability to Doom3 BFG?

Hey, can you please add more replayability to Doom3 BFG? I mean, I know it's a game from 2012 but please.

Doom3 is a different take on the Doom series but still a classic in itself. While most of the Doom series wants to be as action packed & fast paced as possible, Doom3 takes a slightly different approach. Doom3 wants to be a fast-paced game as well, not as fast paced as Doom 2016, but not slow-paced eighter, allowing the players a moment of respiro while still being action-packed, but mainly focused on the horror elements, on the tension that the enviroment gives you. You are still strong, but not as strong as the Doomslayer from 2016 onwards, here, while you can hold your own, the demons are the danger, in Doom 2016 you are the danger. This allows Doom3 to be action packed & fast paced while maintaining the horror element because you are not the strongest thing in the room and giving you a moment to breathe. It's 2 different philosophies that both proved succesful in their own right.

Which is why I think the BFG Edition nails it perfectly with the new flashlight system. It allows Doom3 BFG to be more action-packed than the original Doom3 since you no longer have to worry about light management while still keeping the horror element. I like the fact that Doom3 BFG Edition just made a game a bit more fast-paced, but at the same time didn't change the core of the game, Doom3 BFG is still Doom3.

So far, Doom3 BFG is the best way to play the old school Doom3. The widescreen, improved graphic pack and new The Lost Missions campaign are great additions to an already great game. However, there are some minor additions that in my opinion would turn Doom3 BFG into a "complete edition" giving you the full experience Doom3 has to offer.

1. SELECT CHAPTER option in CAMPAIGN -> Sometimes you just want to replay a level, either with a starting pistol or the weapons you had when you reached that level.

2. COOPERATIVE CAMPAIGN for 4 PLAYERS -> The Doom series has SO MUCH potential for co-op. It is a series that screams co-op. I talked previously about the different philosophies of Doom3 and the rest of the Doom series, the co-op being ... is valid for both. In the case of Doom3, because it's a horror experience, fast-placed, not slow-paced but not as fast-placed as the rest of the Doom series either, and being scared together as a group is always fun. Or always having 1 guy to cover your back is always fun. Like being the Bravo Squad from the original Doom3 campaign. In the case of the rest of the Doom series, because smashing demons together is always fun.

The co-op can be easily "introduced" in the campaigns - In the original Doom3 campaign, more than 1 person goes off the space ship. In the Ressurection of Evil campagin more than 1 person survives the touching of the artifact. In the Lost Mission it's another Bravo Squad member that survived.

- Another character model will be inserted in cutscenes (where the main character has no voice so there's no need for extra recording).

- If a player dies he will be respawned at the start of the level with only a pistol. To incentivize players not to die but also not fail the mission if they die.

- The first player to pick-up an item is the one who takes the item, so they need to manage this.

- Player 1 (the host) will have the artifacts in Doom 3 and Doom 3 ROE.

- Elevators and other important doors need to be activated by all players to work, the same is true for exit level buttons.

- When you click "cooperative" you have 3 options: "Create Match", "Join Match" and "Splitscreen" (some people can do that even on PC).

- In Create Match you can automatically invite a friend via Steam, make it a public match or make it a private match with password. You can start a new cooperative campaign, select chapter or load a cooperative campaign (different from singleplayer load games; remember the loadout of all players, but not the user, so remembers the loadout of playerr 3 but player 3 can be another user this time), then you click "start" and the game begins.

- If someone disconnects during play, they should have the option to join back via hotjoin.

- Playing games especially campaigns cooperative with your friends is a lot more fun than playing alone and Doom3 seems like the game that would work well as a horror co-op.

- The co-op can be located in the menu, between campaing and multiplayer is another option called "cooperative".

3. HORDE MODE for 4 PLAYERS -> This will truly enhance the game's replayability, it's just something for players who just want mindless killing engaged. An instant-action sort of way. Horde Mode is essentially survival, you are in an arena and you have to complete as many waves of enemies as possible, each wave gets stronger and stronger, there is no end goal or objective, just to survive for as long as possible. Lore-wise, you can be one of the random marines on Mars during the demonic invasion.

You are in an Arena-based map, these maps can be taken from already existing maps from the 3 campaigns.

- Waves of enemies come to kill you, the goal is to survive as many waves as possible.

- You get health kits, armor, ammo and weapons spawned after each new wave.

- Waves have no limits and at some point simply replace enemies with stronger enemies and increase their number.

- When you click "Horde Mode" you have 3 options: "Create Match", "Join Match" and "Splitscreen".

- In Create Match you can set the Horde Mode's difficulty based on the campaign difficulties and opt for not respawning health after each round, effectively making the Horde Mode a sudden death mode and more hardcore. And you can select an option to activate the console commands, in case you want to mess around alone or with friends.

- It doesn't have to have a big roaster of maps, somewhere around 5 maps should be enough as the majority of players would play for the kills, but there should be one map with low light where the players have to use their lights.

- If a player dies, he respawns when the wave ends with only a pistol.

- You have 15 seconds between waves to pick up health and ammo and get to your favourite positions.

- Co-op and horde mode are fun to do with friends.

- The horde mode can be located in the menu, between cooperative and multiplayer being another option called "Horde Mode".

4. PLUTONIA EXPERIMENT and TNT EVILUTION for Doom2 -> This will offer players the complete classic Doom experience, they can be merged with Doom2 and added as expansions for Doom2 located between "Hell on Earth" and "No Rest for the Living" to keep things chronologically. In the same way you select chapters in Doom1, you select expansions in Doom2.

5. MULTIPLAYER for 8 PLAYERS for Doom1 and Doom2 -> The PC versions of Doom1 and Doom2 had no multiplayer, however, that can be changed with the BFG Edition. Below "New Game" an option called "Multiplayer" can be added. There you can: "Create Match", "Join Match" (and you're met with the servers list), "Splitscreen", "Favorite Color: Green / Grey / Orange / Red / Blue / Purple / Brown / Yellow / Pink / Cyan", "Mode: Online/LAN", "Back".

The options such as multiplayer controls can be already interaged in the main menu options.

- In "Favorite Color: Green / Grey / Orange / Red / Blue / Purple / Brown / Yellow / Pink / Cyan" and "Mode: Online/LAN" you can change the option by pressing "Enter" on it.

- The green, grey, orange and red colors were the original colors for Doom 2 deathmatch or cooperative. While blue, purple, brown, yellow, pink and cyan are all that is left to complete the most basic colors. The color you pick is the color you play as in deathmatch or cooperative.

- The gamemodes can be: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Cooperative.

- In Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag there are only 2 teams: red and blue.

- If your color is taken, say you selected "Favorite Color: Yellow" but someone is already in the game with a Yellow color, you get skipped on that server to the next color "Red", and if Red is taken you get skipped further until you find an empty color.

- In cooperative, if you die you respawn at start.

- Some missions can become unwinnable if you fail, such as the ending in mission 8 from Doom2, as such, a level restart option should be available for the host, just in case.

- Unlike Doom3, in Doom1 or Doom2 only 1 player needs to reach the exit to finish the mission.

- It is not much, but will bring that classic element of Doom1 and Doom2 competitive back to life.

6. Separate volumes for GAME VOICE and PLAYER VOICE -> This audio option will allow the player to modify the volume of the game and the voice of other players in multiplayer / cooperative modes.

I know this is not the official Bethedsa forum, but I'm hoping of sending it to them. Thank you for reading.

There is pretty much zero chance of Bethesda updating DOOM 3 BFG Edition, especially considering DOOM 3 already got an updated re-release in 2019 (this version is called the "Bethesda.net Edition" on Steam).

I can't imagine that being easy to implement at all with how weapon progression works in the game. Playing later levels with a starting pistol wouldn't be feasible, as the game was designed for continuous play. For replaying levels, you can just use manual saves.

2. COOPERATIVE CAMPAIGN for 4 PLAYERS

Would there be an audience for this?

3. HORDE MODE for 4 PLAYERS

id Software and Bethesda are not going to spend time and resources adding additional modes to DOOM 3 when they are busy with current projects.

4. PLUTONIA EXPERIMENT and TNT EVILUTION for Doom2

Those have already been added to the standalone re-releases of DOOM and DOOM II.

Oh good atleast you said please! And how would they go about adding more replayability? You need to be more specific.

And then.. you became more specific, yet also much more unrealistic. Add a horde mode? TNT and Plutonia? Yeah good luck with that sports.

Some bits are good Q-o-L suggestions, but unless id/Bethsoft is going to update the game again for a new generation, no chance.

The first one is probably this one, the flashlight removes all the tension from the darker parts of the game, it wouldn't be as bad if at least if they increased the difficulty of these parts, but instead of doing that they actually gave more ammo to the player and lowered the quantity of enemies.
The second problem is that the BFG edition isn't even the more up-to-date version of the games it includes, each game was rereleased as standalone so they could add more features to Doom and Doom II (and it probably has something to do with the fact that Doom 3 isn't part of the canon anymore). The only reason why the BFG Edition hasn't been delisted yet is probably because they didn't migrated the version available on their launcher.

Have you ever looked at the size of some of the maps of Doom 3? At best it could fit 2 players in most areas, not mentioning all the sequence breaking that could happen.

Doom Eternal only got Horde Mode because most maps already are circular arenas and because a fan basically made 90% of it before Id Software, and Quake got it because Machine Games really likes making Quake maps and finding excuses to not work on Wolfenstein 3. The only chance of that happening would be the same thing as the way Eternal got it, considering they actually updated Doom 3.

I played the BFG Version last Year on the PS3, because i wanted to experience its 3D-Feature.

The Changes seem pretty much been made for Consoles.

I "only" played the original Doom 3 on Normal on the PC and i killed so many Imps with the Shotgun with just one Shot.

On Consoles it just seems impossible aiming proper with the Controller, i just need more Shots.

Also the Handling of Stuff seems crapier, since a Controller is limited compared to a Keyboard and Mouse.

So i was glad to have more Ammo on the Console.

But i have to admit, i also never ran out of Ammo...

I was never planing ahead what Weapon i should use, i just spammed what ever i liked.

The omni present Flashlight really did take out the Tention in the dark Areas.

So for a causal fun playtrhough, get the BFG Version, its no Problem to have such wish.

But for more Tention? Go get the original one and load some HD-Textures, the Game plays and looks than even greater.

I also dislike that they changed the Voice in the Beginning :P

1. There is zero money in updating what in reality is a tweaked version of nearly 20 year old game. Not going to happen.

2. This isn't a Bethesda forum so why are you trying to communicate with them here?

I've not played BFG yet (have it on Switch for lost missions.) but in Doom 3 I already had too much ammo, so more ammo with less monsters very much wouldn't improve it.

As a few others said, the progression is designed for continuous play. Maybe viable if they did something like Half Life (The crappy Source Engine port, not the original), cause I think in that the game would give you a load out of most of the weapons you were supposed to find before the chapter you select.

This feels like asking for a lot, especially given that they need to set up netcode, and everything else for a 2004 game that didnt have such multiplayer features initially. I know quake got that when it got updated, but it already had the multiplayer functionality in the first place. Chances are though, you can find a decent fan made mod adding at least coop in, given Doom 3's engine is open source.

EDIT: also, this...

Doom Eternal only got Horde Mode because most maps already are circular arenas and because a fan basically made 90% of it before Id Software, and Quake got it because Machine Games really likes making Quake maps and finding excuses to not work on Wolfenstein 3. Already done in the Re releases for Doom 1 & 2.

Multiplayer has been in Classic Doom for years? Even in the earliest days of it, Ultimate Doom had support for LAN duels IIRC.. And Doom 2 definitely had the multiplayer support, and many clients for it, like DWANGO, have been made for it back then.

And there are also multiplayer oriented ports like Zdaemon, Odamex, and Zandronum for today. You also need a server browser to connect to servers more easily. Zandronum should come with one prepackaged.

6. Separate volumes for GAME VOICE and PLAYER VOICE -> This audio option will allow the player to modify the volume of the game and the voice of other players in multiplayer / cooperative modes.

What about Discord or Skype? Consoles like the PS4 and Xbox also have options where you can mix party audio as well as game audio, as well as choose to play in game chat or party.

Doom 3 can be a very engaging experience, and sure, we'd all love quality-of-life improvements, maybe even some visual enhancements... But the fact of the matter is that D3 has a very tiny audience, so imagine how much profit would be lost if your company went through the trouble of adjusting all sorts of parameters, especially ones that break the game, requiring additional work to fix. On top of that you're also asking for its inclusion of Doom, Doom 2 and Final Doom to all have dedicated multi-player setups, even though almost no one would load those versions of the games for online play? On top of that there's also promotion/marketing, as well as console ports, which means an even bigger budget.

You're essentially asking Betheseda and id to work needlessly on a product that won't sell. They may as well throw giant bags of money into a fire.

I do think they could at least fix the missing visual effects, Ammo and Flashlight settings and fix back up ROE at least.

Though it sadly seems unlikely.

I doubt D3's Audience is as small as you make it out to be, unless you mean in comparison to Eternal just.

I doubt D3's Audience is as small as you make it out to be, unless you mean in comparison to Eternal just.

Think about how much community content there is for Doom 3 versus id's other IPs.

Still more than RAGE.

And there are plenty of popular games with a small mod scene, such as Deus Ex or Tomb Raider.

As a few others said, the progression is designed for continuous play. Maybe viable if they did something like Half Life (The crappy Source Engine port, not the original), cause I think in that the game would give you a load out of most of the weapons you were supposed to find before the chapter you select.

They actually did. You can test that if you use the console to go directly to a level.

It's all documented on the Doom Wiki already. For example, for the Comm Transfer level:

https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Communications_Transfer:_Maintenance_and_Transfer_Station#Starting_inventory

You start with flashlight, shotgun, machine gun, plasma gun, extra ammo, and two grenades.

Really it only makes sense that you'd have such a feature built-in, if only to make playtesting the level easier. If every time the level designer for level 70 needs to replay the previous 69 levels first to test a change, they will very quickly no longer find that nice.

Would there be an audience for this?

id Software and Bethesda are not going to spend time and resources adding additional modes to DOOM 3 when they are busy with current projects.

Those have already been added to the standalone re-releases of DOOM and DOOM II.

They added a survival mode in Quake 1 recently. Who knows. They might do it.

Horde, not Survival. And that was Machine Games work and done in QuakeC.

Horde is like a survival mode though. You fight waves of enemies. That's what a survival mode is. Or has the term for that change?

The community has traditionally called that invasion or horde, where as survival usually refers to normal co-op but with limited lives.

Ah, thanks for the info! That makes a lot of sense.
