Sell $300M worth of video game IPs in order to fund further environmental destruction via easily duplicatable pictures.

Great decision, Square Enix. I totally hope it doesn't backfire in your face.

Crystal Dynamics made the game, not Squeenix. They are developing the next title too.

I heard on a podcast somewhere that Embracer bought Gearbox for 1.5 billion in comparison. Such disrespect to lowball Lara and company like this haha... but I think it's hilarious because of Square's stupid reasoning. This partnership never sat well with me. Square expected Tomb Raider to sell like Call of Duty, that Rise Xbox exclusivity was a horrible idea at the time, and the Mankind Divided marketing/forced multiplayer stuff was disastrous.

Throwing Eidos away for pennies, I hope that doesn't hurt them. But I also hope that they'll find more freedom and be better off going forward under a different publisher.

Not sure if I'd want them to finish the Jensen arc or not with Deus Ex, but I'd take a new one either way. Thief 4 was like, a fine 6/10 for me. Not bad, but I think the Dishonored's beat out the Eidos Montreal Deus Ex / Thief 4 stuff, though I still like this blend of genres a lot so I want more!

I've actually been going back to the old Tomb Raider's and was shocked at how hardcore and awesome they are, TR1-TR2 so far. I liked Anniversary a lot too. The new trilogy was solid, but I'm ready for another reboot and new take.

Square Enix have hopelessly mismanaged their Western operation for years. Finally it has bitten them in the arse and now they can go and make their bullshit blockchain monkey.png games that will be shut down within the year. I for one am optimistic - given Embracer's overall output and commitment to solid, mid-tier single player games I'd guess that we can at least look forward to Switch ports of a good chunk of the old games they've acquired.

Now if only Square Enix would sell Taito to a better company, so i could get a new Chase H.Q., Bubble Bobble and Ninja Kids.

Honestly this is probably the best thing that's happened to those series in at least a decade. Well, far far longer for Legacy of Kain. I never thought I'd ever see another one of those, and of course nothing has been announced, but Embracer seems really embrace the history of gaming, and letting studios do there own thing. Because when studios are happy and left to their own devices, they have a far better chance of creating something great. If they're being beaten down and micro-managed every step of the way, it shows in the end product.

Except for 3D Realms and Duke Nukem Forever, they were happy, so happy they couldn't stop fucking around and finish a game.

And this is probably one of the worst things that could happen for Squeenix, so I'm happy about that too!

I am really surprised that Eidos/Tomb Raider just by themselves didn't sell for $300,000,000. The Tomb Raider/Lara Croft brand just by itself is one of the most widely known brands in the world. It even had three movies, and I always thought the reboot entries sold pretty well.

I understand Theif, Deus Ex, and especially Legacy of Kain are generally only known in the gaming world... but Tomb Raider really surprised me. I guess one companies potential bored monkey collection is another companies treasure. And hopefully we can only benefit from that.

To think that the reason why Squaresoft had to merge with Enix in the first place was because "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" was a commercial disaster. But in hindsight, it was an ambitious, technologically ground-breaking project as well as a decent enough movie in its own right.

Imagine going from that to investing in NFTs...

Not really, although TSW is what usually ends up taking the blame. There is plenty of info online if you're interested.

"Yasuhiro Fukushima, former chairman of Enix, told Mainichi that a merger with Square had been under consideration as long as three years ago. According to Mr. Fukushima, the sticking point at the time was the terrible showing of Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within, which made Enix think twice before committing to the partnership."

TSW, although it obviously hurt the company in the long run,  actually ended up delaying the merge.

Can't wait to see Squeenix eat shit and then just continue on as if nothing happened, I swear that company made a pact with the devil to just constantly fall upwards…

I wonder, has anyone actually met or actually know someone who is into NFTs? I have met exactly 1 person who was and he looked like a rich arsehole who drove a gaudy car and wore expensive shit, wasn't too bad to deal with though.

Is it a rich person thing I'm too retail worker to understand?

Nope, was going through the Florianópolis downtown this week and I saw a billboard displaying a new ape wannabe project and you could see the visible confusion in everyone.
