You don't need physical boxes for games, do you? It seems to me, boxes for old games are for collectors nowadays. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

If some idiot put a bunch of perfectly playable video games in a museum just to be stared at in their boxes, sure, I'd hate it. A painting exists to be stared at. It can fully be enjoyed in a museum setting. You don't put a copy of Spaceballs on DVD on display in a museum. You freaking watch the movie. You don't put a copy of Animal Farm on display in a museum, you crack it open and read it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted September 18, 2019 I have well over 200 cartridges for old game systems, I actually have played all of them over the years though (although some not to completion) but I still kept the carts after I was more or less totally done with some of them, they're all on a shelf downstairs. Do I qualify for the hoarding fuckface asshole who drives prices up awards? I also have a VASTLY SUPERIOR box to linguica: -Doesn't contain Doom2 -Loads of shovelware maps that are unplayable -Only signed by Romero rather than the whole crew -Box is even more bashed up BOOOOOOM! beat that!!!! Oh I also intend to keep my Sigil box unopened for a long ass time like a proper crater-brained POS since I had already played it a bunch by the time the box arrived 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
WadArchive Posted September 18, 2019 or prices/demand goes up because those that had those system or games when they are younger want to go back and play them for nostalgic reasons. Or now have some disposable income to be able to buy the games when previously they didn't. why else are all the console companies producing mini consoles? I doubt it is because of the collectors out there 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
CyberDreams Posted September 18, 2019 (edited) It's basically whatever's hot at the moment. Classic FPS games are really hot right now (well so is anything retro really) so anything Doom related is expensive as balls. I don't want to start a big collection but i do want to own at least The Ultimate Doom and Doom II but i can't find a box that's complete with everything and in decent condition for a reasonable buy it now price on ebay. I don't ever bid on anything so i doubt i'll find one anytime soon, especially since i don't work (that means that i don't have a lot of money lol). The Macintosh versions seem to be cheaper though so maybe i'll pick up one of those (although i wouldn't be able to actually play it). I did manage to finally buy Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil CIB for PC in nice condition but those are easy to find and really cheap as i really do like Doom 3. @OneDoomedSpaceMarineBut yeah, to store your box just make sure it's not in a humid or wet place or in direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will fade it over time. Just use common sense really and it'll be fine :) I do sort of have a hatred (as well as jealousy obviously lol) for people who just collect games and don't play them. I kind of understand it though as i do want to start collecting just mainly Doom related items but i don't want to collect every damned boxed PC game that is out there. But most of those big time collectors know other people who have the items so they get hooked up or they find them for dirt cheap so it's not like they actually paid the going rate for them. How they manage to actually find things in thrift stores i'll never know as i can never find anything worth of value at my local Goodwills ect (i stopped going last year but my dad tells me that they still never have anything). People still find CRT's and stuff at certain ones. They haven't had CRT's at mine in 3-4 years or more as they stopped accepting them because no one was buying them lol. It doesn't really have anything to do with older video games not being produced anymore as 10-15 years ago SNES games weren't produced either and they weren't that expensive tbh but they have shot up significantly in price lately as well as a lot of fakes appearing. It's just the whole "nostalgia/retro" craze that's been going around lately. Edited September 19, 2019 by CyberDreams 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I doubt it is because of the collectors out there You are apparently not into the classic game scene because most people don't play their mini consoles either. They buy them and put them on the shelf forever. If you check Atari Age, the same people buy the Flashback every single year and that thing barely changes its games lineup and the emulation is still ridiculously bad. They buy it, put it on the shelf, and the immediately start asking about box variants or special editions, if not next year's release. The Neo Geo Mini screwed up the button layout on their own damn system and half the people on the Neo Geo forums bought all the different regional variants and put them on the shelf forever. Seriously, to understand the scale of this screw up, imagine if on the Super Nintendo Mini they had switched the A for the B button and the X for the Y button. That's what they did on the Neo Geo Mini. And they put analog sticks instead of digital joysticks on a freaking 1990 arcade machine replica. The Playstation Mini is barely functional and people bought it. It emulates PS1 games MUCH worse than half a dozen other Sony devices (PSP, PS3, PS4, PS TV, PS2 [which actually uses hardware backwards compatibility). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
WadArchive Posted September 18, 2019 I am into collecting older games and systems. Those users on atariage and similar sites are still a small proportion of buyers of these mini systems. I agree that a lot will still end up on shelves collecting dust whether they are collectors or not for various reasons. However this is offtopic. @OneDoomedSpaceMarine I know for console boxes you can get protective cases for them so you might be able to find some for a big box. I should probably get some myself 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Doomkid Posted September 19, 2019 I actually got the box (already signed) in a mapping contest held by Buckshot! Never had a chance to meet or see any of the old id crew unfortunately, so I’m really lucky to have it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Jello Posted May 9, 2022 I don't think I even have the original jewel cases for Ultimate Doom and Doom 2, the discs got transferred to blank cases at least 20 years ago because the original cases had gotten cracked over time so I transferred the discs and sleeves to new cases. All my original game boxes were thrown out during a move when I was a teenager. I still have the original discs though, but for the last two plus decades I've just saved my Doom and Doom 2 folders along with everything else I want to save onto USBs and transferred the data to a new PC. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Roebloz Posted May 10, 2022 I don't have much in terms of physical Doom, I have Doom 2 GBA somewhere and I am getting Doom SNES for my collection, but otherwise the King of my collection and pretty much the only physical release of Doom that I have is my SIGIL Beast Box. Aside from being the SIGIL Beast Box and being huge, the Beast Box is the crowned jewel simply because I got it for free from John himself since he was impressed with Doom 32x Delta's SIGIL port. Yeah I know I flex thisnat every opportunity I get but hey, this time you kinda asked, and it's metal as fuck. 8 Quote Share this post Link to post
