Lugbzurg Posted May 23, 2022 Hello, World! I thought I would share with you all a “pilot episode” of sorts I created for my College English Finals based on Doom. Long story short, my colleagues and I were each tasked with running a blog site on absolutely any research topic we wanted, as long as we stayed within the parameters of citing sources, designing the website in a comprehensible manor, etc. I chose “Classic Doom Lore”, as there has always been more going on in the classic games than most people give them credit for, but since John Carmack used to be dismissive of videogame stories in general several years ago, many assume this was the attitude everyone at id Software held, despite Carmack changing his mind not long after that infamous quote (note his two Doom RPGs), along with Sandy Petersen, who wrote the original game, bringing up classic Doom lore on his YouTube channel every now and then. Anyway, this ultimately accumulated in me developing the ultimate testament to my argument; I had to essentially create a “pilot episode” of what it might look like if I created a Doom TV show. Maybe it's a bit of a pipe dream, but it's been a dream of mine for years. I've had a script for the first season that I've written and rewritten over and over, which I retrofitted into this project. I've synthesized Doom's instruction manual and Knee-Deep in the Dead together, along with some concepts pulled right out of the first three Quake games and even cut ideas straight from Tom Hall's old Doom Pitch Bible that got left on the cutting room floor. It is perhaps more like a radio drama with some screenshots and B-roll to accompany it, and while I wrote the entire thing in first-person, if by some miracle this lead to the development of an actual TV show, Doomguy wouldn't really be narrating. I just wrote it that way to give it more immersion as a way to make up for the limited visuals. Well, here it is! Let me know what you all think. I feel like presenting this to several complete strangers will grant me more objective feedback. Is anything incoherent? Is anything boring? Is anything cringe? I've actually been thinking of revising this for another draft. I've already noticed a few things here and there; Mistakes I ought to correct, as well as other aspects I can improve upon. At this point, I have just finished polishing the closed captions, so if you have the time, grab some popcorn (or Devil's foodcake doughnuts), watch the video (on your TV if you can; the video is in 4K, 60PFS), and let me know how it was. I'll accumulate all the feedback here and use it to develop a new and improved revision of the story.I hope you all enjoy! Without further ado, here is the video. 8 Quote Share this post Link to post

This is quite misleading, John Carmack mentioned modern games while talking about story, not old ones like Doom, and I'm pretty much sure Sandy talks about design and concepts a lot more than lore, besides, all the text in Doom was made as secondary thing, they just wanted to finish it as fast as possible so they could go back to making the game itself. But the video looks fine, I guess, not that I really watched a lot of it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted May 24, 2022 That was hilarious!! And it just gets funnier the instant Doomguy enters the hanger. I also like all the little references to Sandy Petersen's original ham-fisted dialogue. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
xScavengerWolfx Posted May 24, 2022 Wait.....Doom has a story? I always though doom was a game where you had a gun, demons and metal music and go on rampages. Huh i guess i was wrong 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
