The Mansion Redone

Recommended Posts

Here we go again, with another "pimp my (psx doom) map" thing!
This time it's the turn of The Mansion, one of the best looking level of all Psx Doom and (in my opinion) probably of all doom 1 and 2.

First things first, again, thanks to PlayStation Doom TC for the original map, music and sounds!

I'll be honest, making this "redone" has been a pain in the arse...

Not because the level had a complicated design, or the aesthetics were too bland and dull, on the opposite: since my goal is to create a sort of remaster of these old maps, to take advantage of new ports, formats and tools without twisting the original layout, I found myself in a bit of trouble when I saw that the level was already well textured, with solid architecture, lighting etc.

Everything was already quite fine, except maybe for progression that always felt a bit annoying to me.

Let's face it, classic doom, nowadays, is really an easy cake, so I present you a hardcore version of The Mansion: this is a warning, the level is not easy, not even in HNTR, so be careful and explore the map!

A couple of changes I made to make it feel even better (hopefully):

  • Reduced Lost Souls hp
  • DECALDEFS for torches, candles and health and armor bonuses
  • Nightmare Spectre and Nightmare Imp
  • New switch texture, lava fall, slime fall, wall, metal flat.
  • A chandelier (credit in txt. file).

Here's the screenshots:

There's only the "after" this time cause I'm lazy.

Here's the info:

  • Game : Doom 2
  • Port : GZDoom 4.7.1 (it uses ZDoom features, so it shouldn't be compatible with anything else)
  • Map Format : UDMF
  • Map # : MAP01
  • Single Player : Designed for
  • Cooperative 2-4 Player : Player starts only (I actually cannot test it for cooperative, so I don't really know how it works)
  • Difficulty Settings : Every Difficulty Implemented
  • Jump : Not Allowed
  • Crouch : Not Allowed
  • Freelook: Optional
  • Base : MAP58 PsxDoomTC
  • Build Time : 4 weeks
  • Editor(s) used : Ultimate Doom Builder, Slade3
  • Render Mode (suggested) : Hardware Accelerated

Here's the map: The Mansion Redone

More Redone here:

Known bugs: For some unknown reason, the first pain elemental acts in a weird way... He doesn't wake up properly and won't attack until you shoot him.

I hope you like it and feedback and critics are always welcomed!

I haven't played the original map, so I can't compare. But I really like the screenshots you provided here, the lighting looks fancy.

Thank you :D
I tried to focus on detailing and lighting, mostly dynamic and colored light, to gain an oppressive and "corrupt" atmosphere, primarily  with red and purple

Here's the update after some of the feedback I received:

  • Fixed a "bug" where you couldn't exit from a secret
  • Added a couple more ammo
  • Tiny better visual pointers for progression and secrets
  • Changed some torches to spice up the visual effect

That's it folks! Thanks to everyone who played it, this is the final version, enjoy it!

  • 2 weeks later...

Enjoyed this one and it got me interested in PSX Doom!  Cool creepy atmosphere with the ambient sound and coloured lighting, definitely reminds me of the cool vibes from Doom 64, well done!

Alright, I decided to give this a go, Hurt Me Plenty. I died once but it was my fault.

Absolutely striking job! Can't say enough good things about this. The atmosphere of the map is perhaps the best thing, really terrifying. The ammo and the combat were perfectly balanced, and the enemy placement (alongside ammo and health pickups) really fit in my definition of Hurt Me Plenty  (Neither too much nor too little).

The two places I found the most terrifying were these two (Check the screenshots if u want):

The exit, with it's creppy evil eye.

Spoiler

And the outside area. Just think about it, you manage to get out of a demonic or cursed place only to find your city completely taken over by evil itsel. Combined with the groans of PS Doom's soundtrack, it results in a very spooky feel. Really good sky box selection

The puzzles weren't that hard, and there were a couple of traps that caught me off guard. Combined with the atmosphere, the color lighting, the enemies, etc. This map was fun, really fun to play. I'll play this at night with lights turned off to amplify the tension (It's 3:34 pm as of this comment writing)

10/10. Good job with this one!

Thanks for playing it and especially for the kind words!
I'm really glad I'm becoming decent in balancing maps :D

Yeah, the original was already atmospheric, but I wanted to give it a much more eerie and desperate vibe and I'm really happy that I managed to obtain a good result.
(sorry for those sort of homs in the exit portal, I have absolutely no clue about why I get that glitch without "hardware accelerated" mode).
