Looking for a Doom Discord!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

seeing as this is my first post here, I'm sure it's probably in the wrong spot. Feel free to chastise me or move it.

I'm 31 and have been playing Doom since '93. I've only really gotten into custom wads and sourceports within the last 10 years. I've been going down the list of all-time best wads and creating my own list of favorites. Diving into MtPain27's channel was like a shot of adrenaline for me; I didn't realize there were people out there that could nerd out about TNT: Evilution's spooky atmosphere, or favorite MIDI compositions, favorite texture packs, etc. all of the juicy nerdy shit my mind craves, essentially. Unfortunately, none of my friends play Doom. They all kind of accept that I'm the boomer of the group and that's just my thing. Sometimes I stream for them in Discord and it's fun to talk about it because I'm very passionate but I can tell they don't REALLY care lmao. I did some basic searching for a Dean of Doom discord or MtPain27 related something or other. All I could really come up with was Jimmy Paddock's discord which seems much more focused on map making and more technical creation kind of discussions.

I streamed on twitch for a few weeks and some of those discussions I had with viewers were some of the most cathartic and exciting I've ever had. I had a viewer watch me play Sunlust for 4 or 5 hours and we talked about the encounters and strategies and stuff. It was like the first time I've ever had someone to nerd about doom with.

I really want to discuss wads and play coop and DM and all of that stuff that I've missed out on my whole life. I was wondering if any of you could point me in a direction to get started. I also look forward to spending more time here.

Funnily enough, yeah. My brothers and I would all crowd around the computer and play shareware Doom for hours together. When Doom 2 came out, it was kind of a religious experience for us. Was I any good? Absolutely not. We always used cheats and never actually beat the games. Didn't stop me from playing it all the time, even as a wee lad.

Welcome! There are some real big Doom nerds making awesome stuff and having fun over in the Hellforge, led by @Bridgeburner56! We have a great time over there, and almost every Saturday they host a deathmatch/co-op session for anyone to join. (Although some of us just meme around by changing our names)
The server definitely revolves around mapping, and is the home to a number of in-progress original GZDoom games, but it's generally a chill place for anyone to hang out and discuss anything in.

You'll definitely recognize a lot of familiar names and pillars of the Doom community there, but remember, we're all just people with a passion for Doom. :)

Welcome to DW!

Even though they're listed as multiplayer discords, most of these are just generally Doomy discords, especially MDF (which is now Doom Central). Might be a few good ones to join in that list, and you'll definitely find some great DMs in these servers too, especially if you have Doom Explorer set up.

I'm right around the same age as you and even had the similar experience of huddling around the screen with the family playing games, it's nice to know others shared that same joy back then. In 1992 I was just a babe, but one of my earliest memories was seeing my family play Wolf3D. I think I was probably about 4 when I first played (and became a lifelong addict of) Doom, so probably some time in 1996.

You were playing since you were a toddler?

My 4 year old steals the chromebook and loads up Doom :D

Gotta raise them well.

And welcome to DW!

I would second The Hellforge. It is, as far as I am aware, the most populated purely classic Doom focused Discord server in the community (at least if there is a bigger one I would love to know!).

Come to @Clippy's discord I have a blast over there.

Second this one, if you want to meet a lot of dudes, you can go to more popular servers.

But if you just want to find some guys and talk about Sunlust over a drink or something. Come in and have some tea!

So I took both of those invites. Hellforge is a bit overwhelming to be honest. A lot of development discussion and stuff and a LOT of different channels. Not sure where a good place to hang out might be.

There is the Romero Game Ltd. server https://discord.gg/QTBh25eFBG and Jhon Romero comes online every friday and you can ask him questions.

The server has a #classics-general channel and a #doom-and-sigil channel and in my experience they talk about wads a lot and people also talk about wads in #general and probably other channels too and there is also a channel called #multiplayer-chat for setting up multiplayer events and sessions and there are times when can play deathmatch with Jhon Romero!

You may be interested in one of these servers (or all of them). If you find Hellforge Studios a bit overwhelming, these servers are smaller, although they're large enough that they still have active communities. They also have

@BluePineapple72's server (The Pineapple under the Sea): It's the home of the PUSS sessions, and all of those projects, along with some others (like Solar Struggle and Skulltiverse) are based out of this server. There's activity here, as well as people hanging out.

@Major Arlene's server (The Doomed Abyss): Arlene and the denizens of the Abyss talk about Doom, level design, and other things. It can be quiet at times, but it's a friendly, welcoming group that will happily nerd out about Doom with you.

@Dragonfly's server (Dragonfly's Doomworks): This is Dragonfly's general server to talk about Doom (playing and mapping), other games, music, and art.

@Jimmy's server (The Entryway): This server used to be known as The Joy of Mapping, but Jimmy recently retooled it. The server is meant to be a place to get into Doom, Doom mapping, multiplayer, etc. This is the largest server of the four, with a pretty active community. There's also a multiplayer presence in this server.
