fbjim Posted July 16, 2022 OP, if you have to ask, you've answered your own question there are a few people who might specifically be into that sort of macho posing, but most people tend to play a certain way because they find it more enjoyable. one thing i would say, though, is that in a lot of cases, it's less about a "challenge surmounted" a la speedrunning, and more that playing saveless gives a very specific feeling of tension and fear due the frustration of possibly losing a great run, and some people really like that feeling, and find it exciting. if ya don't like that feeling, well, nothing anyone says will make you like it. there's very few things on this earth more subjective than "fun". 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Exactly. Pistol start vs. continuous, slaughtermap vs. exploration, saveless vs. saves... we're talking different experiences, and none are objectively better or worse than the other. For me, I don't enjoy feelings of frustration. I like overcoming challenges, so I don't mind hard maps, but if I were to limit myself to saveless, I would quickly start getting frustrated. So, I don't bother. All it took was twenty minutes into a long level without having saved and suddenly dying to an instadeath crusher to make me realize that I don't like saveless. Some people like the tension, though. And that's perfectly fine. Doom doesn't force you to save, and it doesn't keep you from saving, either. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lemonlytical Posted July 16, 2022 I only ever go saveless when im playing something im comfortable in, easier wads, or early parts of harder ones, but with things like sunlust.... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kokoro Hane Posted July 16, 2022 (edited) I can see the fun and challenge in it, but I personally like to save. Mainly during my first time through a wad. But once I get to know a wad, and if the maps are short enough like a lot of the original maps, I think a no save run would be quite a fun challenge! But only if you've gotten to know the wad, because it would be really frustrating if you've made big progress and didn't save and have to restart, especially if a level is really tricky. So it's not something I'd personally find fun in a blind run. Edited July 16, 2022 by Kokoro Hane 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
D0M0 Posted July 16, 2022 Playing Doom with saves was how I started, and I can quite frankly say there’s nothing wrong with it. However I guess by not saving, it does make things more interesting as well as challenging. I wouldn’t say it’s not fun to play without saves but it can definitely get frustrating at times. I think what people should be asking is not “is it fun for other people” but rather “is it fun for themselves”. Everyone has their own preferences of what is fun and what is frustrating, and the whole not saving thing adds something new into a game that has many different ways of playing it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
fbjim Posted July 16, 2022 (edited) i *have* outright seen people ruin games for themselves with quicksave abuse (the most notable example i can think of was Dishonored, where i had a bunch of people go like, "help, I'm saving and reloading every time i get spotted and somehow i'm not enjoying the game") but if you're having a good time Dooming, go ahead and do what you want Edited July 16, 2022 by fbjim 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Roebloz Posted July 16, 2022 Having grown up with Doom 2 GBA, I can approve having saves between levels. As for in levels, I only really do that when I'm testing something specific or if the map is too hard for me. (So, I end up saving often.) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
unerxai Posted July 16, 2022 (edited) I used to play saveless in pretty much every level-based game I played. For example in Quake's E4M5 there's a secret exit where you have to jump on these very tiny platforms above lava. If I failed I'd have to do the entire level again. I thought it added to the immersion and made the gameplay more tense and exciting. Nowadays I'd never do such things, but I respect people who choose to play like that for their own enjoyement. Cruduxy Pegg Posted July 16, 2022 I don't die in the Iwads. Does that make me a masochist if I don't save for no reason?! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
out_of_service Posted July 16, 2022 (edited) Yes, it's quite exhilarating. It's what chewing 5 Gum feels like. What a RUSH!!! Edited July 16, 2022 by Piper Maru 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

If you're not gonna engage with the question, why bother replying? You do that a lot, my dude. On topic, sometimes I play without saves for the adrenaline in the face of danger, kinda like that scene in Breaking Bad where Walt screams in ecstasy in his cat after successfully closing a deal with Tuco. It really depends on the map though, I would never do that with BTSX's MAP12, for example. Sunlust is certainly a rush without saves if you're into that sort of thing. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gerardo194 Posted July 17, 2022 Yes, it's fun. Even though I started playing with saving the game, I just use it in the exit of the levels in case just completing it at 100% and in the beginning of next map. If I die when playing. I start again. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
PanDeFrutas2007 Posted July 19, 2022 if it's a small wad that only lasts a few minutes I don't usually save the game, but if it's a long megawad then yes, it really depends on the people, it's better to save halfway through the level, start again from 0 is sometimes very fuck, but there are people who like to take risks, for me it is a nuisance so... yes, there are people who enjoy it :D 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Suess Posted July 19, 2022 I've personally never tried before, but it sounds fun. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
