I actually thought the first one was kinda ok. Dumb and cringeworthy, sure. But it still had some genuine cool moments and interesting enough characters. It also fit the style of the 80s, and when all is said and done, at least it was something new at the time.

 

Maverick on the other hand spends most of its runtime simply copying the first one and delivering one lazy fan service moment after another. There's almost no story aside from that. The whole thing is patriot porn written like a direct-to-video Steven Seagal movie. And Tom Cruise is just too damn old to be taken serious as the (still) too cool for school hotshot fighter pilot.

 

I love that moment towards the end when Maverick and New Geese/Rooster go up against the two evil fighter jets and Rooster says all dramatically: "Then it's a dogfight..."

He should have looked straight into the camera and gave the audience a big grin and a wink to round off the effect. And then right afterwards he says even more dramatically: "It's noat da plain, it's da pailette." I just wanted to go unconscious at that moment.

That and the fact that he is a Scientologist/abusive creep makes it impossible for me to enjoy him as an actor anymore.
