Neonetik Posted June 9, 2022 Hey y'all. I'm real new to Doom modding and stuff, and wanted to give something a go. Generally, I like to keep my experiences vanilla, but I saw a fair few people recommend something called a "smooth doom", and looked it up online, and found a few different versions that seemed to describe similar things but not be quite the same? Like, some only mentioned being smooth for weapons, some mentioned smoothing out weapons AND enemies but they were made by totally different people (so who knows if the one that does more is actually to the same standard as the one that does less), etc. I kinda wanna try that (if one mod does weapons and monsters but the other only does weapons but does it better, could I combine them?), but was wondering what people would recommend, and if there was a guide to making that stuff work long with other wad packs (I did manage to get that working on PRboom+ and have played through like half of Sunlust without issue and some other wads). I'd like this to work for both Doom 1 and 2 wads if possible. Just to give an example of seemingly how many versions there are of the same thing, some of which even have addition modifiers under them, I'll post a few links at the bottom of this post. In addition to this, I was wondering what other good quality of life mods there were that I could run with a vanilla launcher or whatever. Any suggestions to good stuff, I'd love to hear, but I'd prefer to avoid changing anything to do with gameplay for now, though if you have something interesting to mention to me aside from this I'll be glad to read anyway. Mostly I'm curious as to what the community likes to play with just to give the classic game that little extra boost of goodness without compromising the original vision. Now, I'm assuming I can't just drag and drop these mods onto the prboom launcher or whatever and that there's a different process to this. I'll be sure to look this up myself as well, but I figure there's probably several guides, so if anyone here could redirect me to one that matches what I'm trying to do in the most hassle free way, I'd appreciate it. That's about it for now. Cheers y'all. https://onemandoom.blogspot.com/2019/07/smooth-doom-smoothdoompk3.html https://www.moddb.com/mods/delashins-smooth-doom-remake (this one has some additional stuff in the files as well) https://www.moddb.com/games/doom-ii/addons/doom-alternative-smooth-weapons 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted June 10, 2022 The Doom/Doom 2 minor sprite fixing project is totally vanilla compatible: Here's a fully vanilla-compatible version of Smooth Doom as well: https://www.doomworld.com/forum/post/2156255 If you want to play in PrBoom+ (by the way, I'd suggest DSDA-Doom, the successor) both of these should run perfectly! 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Sethlab 79461813 Posted June 10, 2022 my personal favorite "vanilla" enhancement is Beautiful Doom. I don't think it's been updated in a few years but it's still compatible with GZDoom at least. It makes everything look a lot smoother, nicer lighting and particle effects, much improved gore and sounds. It has some options for enhanced versions of certain weapons but you can turn them off. The only thing I did differently was open the .pk3 up in an editor and removed the status bar. Was really not a fan of BD's status bar. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nefelibeta Posted June 10, 2022 Note that most mods that affect only appearances will also mess up the dehacked content, no matter if it’s a gzdoom mod or a vanilla dehacked wad. Learned that the hard way. ;-; 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

It's still a fun one to mess around with from time to time. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
remusilyes6 Posted July 13, 2022 I recommend Project S.I.D.E (formerly known as neural smooth doom) https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=67699 Basically it takes overhauls doom in a way that almost everything is smooth. From weapons all the way to switches and water. You also have other mods included like Nash gore and tilt ++ and brightmaps. Oh yeah, you also get a 2x upscale pack, how cool is that? Seriously, you should check it out. It sad not many people heard about it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
kalensar Posted July 13, 2022 I'll just throw my own 2 cents into this mix with my own Smooth Doom type clone. This is a project that I have honed for over a year, though the name changes have updated too. The current title is Code Only; Zleek Doom. This is the GZDoom and LZDoom compatible version. Basically its Decorate style that reanimates the existing doom assets to make them smoother and add all sorts of effects on top of it using the GZDoom engine capabilities such as better blood on ALL enemies, ejecting ammo casings on player and enemies, smoother walking animations, and bullet tracers on player guns and zombies guns. This built to be a 1 to 1 and despite some visual aethetics, all the guns and enemies perform at their vanilla timing. https://www.moddb.com/games/doom-ii/downloads/code-only-zleek-doom-gzdlzd-only-version 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
