Cancelled Quake port for the GBA developed by Randal Linden has been dumped.

Particularly the PS2 version.

Oh Hell, i have it because i thought back then that i could play some Rounds against Bots without booting up the PC.
But i never played much of it... the Loading Times are brutal, hadn't experienced such since the Commodore 64.

If someone has the Need for Quake Multiplayer on a old Console, go for Quake 2 on the N64.

the GBA for example now also has a WIP homebrew port of Tomb Raider and it's surprisingly playable.

Yeah, I was surprised too, but Tomb Raider has always been infamous for its tank controls, so I can see it playing just fine on a console like the GBA.

Wouter "Aardappel" van Oortmerssen (WadC, Cube/Cube 2) used to to do the level design on it. Details here, but here is a screenie:

Thanks! i have been trying to uncover why Aardappel was in this game. might be some helpful info for the Quake GBA Page, i actually talked about it in the IRC for TCRF.

Fun fact for ya : there was a leaked gba spreadsheet for game ids, and the "ABTE" in this game's serial corresponds to a batman game? :

Of course its the GBA Port, thanks for WaluigiBSOD for giving me info about this

The models seem to be from OpenQuartz.

It really is, but by the time these resources started appearing the Nintendo DS had already been released, I think, this is probably why this port was canceled, or the person that dumped the files changed the Quake resources so there wouldn't be any problems with Zenimax.

Either way, there were some good 3D games on GBA, there's even a demo of Resident Evil 2, but I don't think some of the bigger and more difficult levels of Quake would play well on a console with 4 buttons and a directional pad.

Gee I wonder why?

Maybe because the GBA port of Doom is using a custom engine designed for the GBA.  Where the Saturn version was using a modified version of the Jaguar port because Carmack was an egotistic imbecile in not allowing the Saturn to have the original, superior engine designed by the lead programmer.

It was ultimately a mistake but I kind of understand where he was coming from, visual stability was a major consideration and a lot of the decisions they had made was to make sure that textures didn't warp and vertices didn't wiggle (too much). I don't think Carmack had recognized that players had gotten used to 3D looking a little wonky in exchange for performance and environmental complexity, though.

I saw MVG's video about this and he showed a Quake 1 E1M1 prototype running on the GBA. It was an older prototype than this and he mentioned it was released this month But i can't find it anywhere, all i can find is this newer one with the new map and weapons.

This runs like ass, but it's so impressive considering it's likely using a borked version of quake's software renderer. Randy does the impossible again!

There used to be a tech demo using the C2 engine. So definitely more development houses thought Quake in some form was possible.

Shame only 007 Nightfire ended up using portal rendering as a shooter for the GBA.

I think MVG thanks Randal Linden at the end of the video, for answering his questions and I think also giving him access to this prototype. Am I right?

I think it is not on the internet, despite the YouTube algorythm shows me now ~10 year old YT videos about the Quake GBA port/prototype.

I haven't searched for it, but if this here was released with Open Quartz, I think you will not find so easily a prototype with Quake assets.

I was looking for this too. I could have sworn both prototypes were released by Forest of Illusion but I guess not.

However, I did find this:

At first I thought it was unrelated to Randy Linden's Quake, Randy Linden wasn't the only person to approach id about a possibility of a Quake GBA port but I noticed the HUD assets are the same as Randy's later build . So I think this may be an early build of Randy's port? This should be available somewhere.

Was the source code ever released for this? The engine seems like it has a lot of potential and it would be nice to see it running with actual Quake game data since the actual Quake version seen in MVG's video that was pitched to id and not the OpenQuartz version that was pitched to other developers doesn't seem like it's going to be released.

Doom 3 was the last Game i really felt that therre was a huge Jump in Grafics.

Everything later was more a slowly growing Evolution.

Well, Doom 3 was mostly about indoors and light & shadow - usually people also picked a "milestone" game that showcased nature (like, forests and waterfalls). Often Far Cry or Crysis are cited, but others might have more unusual choices maybe.

Yeah, I can see why this was never finished. It runs terribly even by GBA FPS standards, and that's without enemies on screen. It's impressive for sure (reminds me of Ashen that would come later on the N-Gage), but it's doubtful they would have been able to make a playable game out of this.

That's kinda dramatic. Doesn't run much worse than PrBoom (and maybe the official GBA Doom) runs on GBA. In fact it seems like it runs better than a lot of 3D GBA games to me, I don't know where you got that from. Unless you were looking at the video I posted above? (Which is not the latest version of the prototype and in fact I'm not even sure if it's Randy's or someone else's attempt at Quake on GBA)

Was this the only quake port that was being worked on? I thought I recall there being another one but perhaps that was for DS or it was an earlier version of this that I saw before weapons were implemented.

A lot of companies tried to pitch Quake GBA to id Software. Randy's was the only one that actually tried to re-implement the Quake engine (i.e. how SNES Doom re-implemented the Doom engine without actually being a port of the Doom code) rather than approximate it (i.e. Saturn Quake, which isn't compatible with Quake game data).

The others were extremely poor to be honest, I recall one tech demo that was supposed to be START.BSP but looked like a Build Engine game complete with y-shearing.

The cancelled DS Quake game was an original game developed solely for the DS, probably a multiplayer-focused game based on Quake 3. I don't think a Quake 1 port was ever in development for the system, which is strange as it seems like an obvious choice given that Wolfenstein and Doom were on GBA. There is a homebrew port.

Half-Life 2 for me. HL2 demonstrated an understanding of lighting -- even if it was baked in -- that I've rarely seen since, and before that I only ever really saw it in the first couple of Thief games.

Come to think of it, wasn't there going to be a Doom game on the DS ?
