Nirvana Posted June 19, 2022 (edited) A new podcast where I'll be interviewing Doom community members and potentially other game devs. In the first episode, I sat down with Benjogami, who you'll know as the creator of Toilet of the Gods, The Egg of Human Endeavors, co-creator of Abandon, and a contributor to a number of community projects. Expect more interviews over the coming weeks :) Spotify link: https://open.spotify.com/show/5YJ73qQc3Ix6pzoV5AjOpN?si=37cb9a90f332459b Edited April 7, 2023 by Nirvana 32 Quote Share this post Link to post

Nirvana Posted June 28, 2022 (edited) Episode two of An Evening with Nirvana is up and it's an interview with Scotty, creator of Cydonia, Criticality, and Behmoth, co-creator of Abandon and someone I have collaborated with on Haste, Flotsam, and Fractured Worlds. Mr. Alexander Posted June 30, 2022 This was a really good interview! Really interested me in a side of the game I don't venture into enough. Looking forward to the next one. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nirvana Posted July 1, 2022 Hoping to talk to people who provide varying types of content to the community, including mapping, streaming, speedrunning etc. I have a good list of guests coming up :) 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nirvana Posted July 6, 2022 (edited) In episode 3 of the podcast, I talk to Megablast, mostly known as a Doom streamer, but also as the co-creator of Tesseract for Mayhem Purple with Mr Zzul (Killer5), and author of a few community project maps here and there. We discuss streaming, difficulty in Doom, some game design principles for mapping, and a few projects we've been working on together. Nirvana Posted July 13, 2022 (edited) In this episode I talk to Tourniquet. Best known for his green behemoth and Cacoward winner Miasma, he started with a series of community projects in 2014 and 2015, one of which saw him paired up with Ribbiks to create Anaemia. We chat about his early community project output, the inspiration he drew from collaborating with Ribbiks, his take on map design and detail work, and his thoughts on constructing non-linear environments. Nirvana Posted July 14, 2022 It's been so great getting to talk to all of these people about Doom and hearing their insights. Glad people are enjoying it :D 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nirvana Posted July 22, 2022 In this episode I talk to Skillsaw. With maps in BTSX 1 and 2 and a defining style of arcadey, fast-paced gameplay, Skillsaw has become one of the most beloved mappers in the Doom community, with wads like Ancient Aliens, Valiant, and Heartland to name a few. We discuss the influence of Alien Vendetta and Scythe 2 on his early works, why slaughter mappers love Vanguard, the palette work of Alien Vendetta, and get into the details of his stylistic and gameplay choices. Mr. Alexander Posted July 22, 2022 "This [unified vision] elevates [Going Down]" ... Skillsaw and his puns again, lol But seriously, great interview, great episode! Currently about halfway through Ancient Aliens and enjoying it a lot. Nice to hear all this behind-the-arenas commentary. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gregor Posted July 22, 2022 This is really neat. I have to say i somehow expected skillsaw's voice to sound way less cool... ;) 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
esselfortium Posted July 23, 2022 Great interview! I would totally play that skillsaw E1 replacement :) 7 Quote Share this post Link to post

RHhe82 Posted July 23, 2022 These are some great podcasts, I listened to them all yesterday and today. Lots of good wad suggestions, but more importantly I found myself booting up UDB for the first time in what must be like six months or so. Inspiring stuff, hopefully there’ll be more episodes! 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

Nirvana Posted July 31, 2022 In this episode I talk to Dannebubinga, best known as the creator of Combat Shock 1 & 2, co-creator of Sunlust, Italo Doom, and a number of Slaughterfest and other community project contributions over the years. We talk about the beginnings of Sunlust, the slaughter community's reaction to standard Doom gameplay and Danne's love for walls of perched Hellknights. Steveb1000 Posted August 1, 2022 I really enjoyed this, thanks for making it and sharing it! I'd listened back to the old World Externination Radio podcasts and was itching to hear a newer more polished podcast. I'm a relative latecomer to Doom so it was eye opening to hear that 'slaughter' gameplay was an outsider passion for a long time. I appreciated your level of research, calmness, and focus on the guest. My one request would be to ask more follow ups to interesting answers (e.g. he mentioned how some of ribbiks ideas had inspired him in his own maps, would have been great to hear more about that). Sure you have lots of guests in mind, my request would be Pavera. I recently played one his map sets for the first time and it felt like it was made for me, so I would live to hear more about his style, as I don't have the brainz to understand why I liked it more than other stuff. Thanks again for making and sharing it. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

Glad you've been enjoying the podcast! Usually what I do is I write out a bunch of questions for the guest and then as we chat I do naturally ask follow up questions (often going on long tangents in fact). I do have to be a little conscious of running time though as well, which in this case ended up ok, but sometimes it's hard to gauge how long it will take to get through the series of questions I have down (Insane Gazebo is coming up and we went very long with that one). I'll endeavour to look out for more moments to ask follow up questions though in the future when possible though. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
MtPain27 Posted August 2, 2022 Listened to your interviews of skillsaw, Benjogami, and Dannebubinga all the way through, and I never listen to podcasts. Granted, the subjects are of particular interest to me, but still, good job! You have an understated rapport with your guests which comes no doubt from the passions you share. I do appreciate that even though you and your guests have a ton of technical knowledge, it rarely feels like you're talking over your audience's head. I also love how you walk each interviewee through their Doom Wiki page and dig into specific maps. It was fun to hear Benjo's commentary on World Orifice (what was the word he used to describe playing it? 'meditative'?) and Danne taking us behind the curtain for maps like Dying on Cue, Proxyon, and God Machine. Looking forward to future installments :) 10 Quote Share this post Link to post

I've actually been watching a bunch of your videos recently and really enjoying them, very soothing structure to the videos that feels like binge watching a TV series; funnily enough, Danne is the person who got me onto you in the first place :D 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Nirvana Posted August 7, 2022 In this episode I talk to Stx-Vile. A veteran speedrunner in the Doom community, he's known for his runs of Swim with the Whales, Nightmare Iwad runs, as well as UV/Maxes of Fractured worlds. He is currently working on a d2all of Valiant, which he has been slowly earning the individual world records for on each map. We talk about his early speedruns, his old compet-n profile questionnaire, what drives him to run, as well as his procedure for routing wads and his latest Valiant Maxes. Nirvana Posted August 14, 2022 Today on the podcast I have an appropriately long conversation with Insane Gazebo, the creator of the gargantuan slaughter spectacle Sunder, as well as a contributor to Haste, Fractured Worlds, and the upcoming Age of Hell. We discuss the early years of Macabre, the inception and process of the maps of Sunder, and his newfound love of UDMF and its lack of a line limit.
