Doom Podcast - An Evening with Nirvana

Recommended Posts

This is one I've been looking forward to for a while... good to hear it like it is, out of my favorite mapper's own mouth.

It's funny, considering how much people fuss over complevels, serving suggestions, and ensuring players get the "right" experience, how I.G. just kind of winged it with those early maps, assuming people would be using freelook, not realizing that ZDoom smoothed out the movement over certain floors, etc. Very cool interview! Nice to get a map-by-map commentary on the big classic. Glad he's in a better mental space than he was when he went into occultation. Looking forward to what he does with UDMF.

Just because I'm a total nerd Use's maps in Community Chest were actually 12 and 13.:)

And they're really good ;p

If you wouldn't have piped up then I would've lmao. I've spent too many hours playing old CChest.

Really enjoyed the insights into how Doom fits into real life and the psychology around your enjoyment of Doom, hope future interviewees talk about that too.

Thanks for having me on your show, Nirvana! I can't believe how quickly I went from admirer to interview subject.

That's what happens when you put in the work to make something as amazing as Dean of Doom.  You're definitely worthy.

Interesting conversation. I didn't play Final Doom until around 2005, so its interesting to hear from someone who grew up with Final Doom and TNT specifically, and how that's informed his Doom perspective as a whole. I don't agree that its the best IWAD, but I do have a lot of time for it. Funny how he says that some might say it makes him a "hipster", when there's clearly no revisionism involved at all.

Great podcast! I liked MtPain's admission that he had begun to acquire a taste for slaughter/challenge maps, which seems to be pretty common among people who make a lot of Doom videos, play a lot of Doom, and consequently get reasonably good at Doom. I'd love to see a video essay from him on the subject once he finally tackles Sunder, maybe an expansion of the digression from the Speed of Doom episode.

Great episode!

The history of Ribbiks' approach towards the difficulty settings and of a gradual shift from "UV is the intended way" towards "HMP is the intended way" was very interesting.

I think you kinda missed one more option in that discussion - an NG+ option, adding that extra precise difficulty as separate maps in the end, but it has its own limitations and caveats of course.

That is actually something we had discussed outside of the podcast. I believe he had, had the idea for Magnolia originally, but didn't necessarily want to be editing two versions of all the maps. I had also had the idea in isolation for Entropy a long time ago -having two separate versions of the map within the same wad- but also didn't want to edit two versions of the map. So laziness prevailed I guess...

This seems to mirror my futile quest to get Ribbiks into shmups...

I always try to get him to play Secret of Evermore as well since he has used the midi so much...never amounts to anything though :'(

In this episode I talk to Archi, creator of Rush, a wad that has become synonymous with introductory slaughter gameplay. He has also taken part in famous Russian community projects A.L.T and Whitemare, as well as co-creating New Gothic Movement 2 with Armoured Blood.

We talk about the differences between the Russian community and the English-speaking community, the origins of Rush, and the virtues of speed-mapping.

Hey, Nirvana, I really enjoy this series. The long form, relaxed discussions work well and are always informative and interesting. Thanks for doing these, mate :)

In this episode I talk to James "Jimmy" Paddock, creator of Deathless and Jenesis and project lead for the Joy of Mapping. He's also known for his midi compositions for BTSX, Plutonia 2, and the Plutonia and Alien Vendetta midi packs.

We talk about Jimmy's penchant for speedmapping, working with John Romero on SIGIL, the process of creating midi, and the inception and creation of his standalone game for the GZDoom engine, The Adventures of Square.

I just want to say I've really been enjoying these conversations, and that this one finally made the itch to map again strong enough that I jumped back into it this week. Looking forward to seeing who you get on next!

Again a great episode in such a great podcast series, thank you! I've really been enjoying them all.

I knew about Decino not being a fan of Alien Vendetta. Still I gotta say that I first played AV this summer, and I still find it a good* mapset, so it's not merely about being spoiled by more modern outings :P

Nice episode.

Regarding the map that uses the revenants' missiles ability to trigger linedefs - the most famous one should be Map 32 from 1000 Lines 2 CP by Aurelius. The map is a one huge puzzle heavily based on that gimmick, but it also has a number of pretty difficult puzzle fights and experimental setups.

In this episode I talk to Bemused, one of the best known macro-slaughter mappers in the Doom community, creator of his early solo project Dank Midis and Linedefs, Cryogenics, and the Cacoward winning Abandon.

He has also contributed to a few projects I have been a part of with maps in Flotsam and Haste. We talk about his original Dank Midis project, early inspirations, how to draw thousands of lines, and Bemused's abundance of map scraps.

Really enjoying this series - you ask quite incisive questions and seem good at probing into what makes your guests tick, in Doom terms at least. Even when I'm not familiar with the guests, I still enjoying listening to you two talk shop.

I'm wondering if you've reached out to Dario Casali? I know he's gotten back into Doom recently - he does playthroughs on his YT channel. I've no idea if he'd be up for something like this, or if you'd be interested in having him on but just thought I'd throw the idea out there.

My guest today is Daerik, who you will likely know as the first person to perform a d2all max of Sunlust, which is all secrets and kills on every map, played unsegmented in one sitting. He also has a number of other impressive runs, like d2all maxes of Valiant, Stardate 20x6, and Ancient Aliens.

We talk about Twitch streaming, the insanity of d2alling Sunlust, and speedrunners-turned-mappers.
