Quake II potential remaster to be revealed this quakecon?

Recommended Posts

It would be great to get a remaster for Q2, if all it does is give HD support and music that actually works out the bag then it'd do.

I'm not asking for it to be all inclusive mega-package that includes shit like the X-Men game and Juggernaut (God I hope not) but a modern fully functioning port would be great.

I think the big question is, if a Quake 2 Remaster was going to be revealed at QuakeCon, when would it happen?

If you go back and look at 2021's schedule, there was a big half-hour long interview scheduled with MachineGames about Quake first thing after the intro speech, another half-hour spot the next day, a music video... a lot of wind blowing in that direction (That some people thought pointed towards a full reboot by MachineGames! Silly buggers.)

2022's schedule has exactly two scheduled pieces of Id Software on it - a 15-minute intro speech by Marty Stratton (half of which will probably be old b-roll of old QuakeCons while wishing they could do an in-person one again), and a 45-minute 4v4 devs-vs-players Quake 1 sesh. I'm not entirely sure either of those is conducive to screaming "hey, it's the one with the strogg! again!" out at the world in a way it'd really take notice of.

Also, I mean, there's also the bit where they're still working on the Quake 1 Remaster. Patches are still happening, based on comments in the Quake Mapping Discord.

So yeah, I'm not expecting to hear anything about a Remaster this week. Maybe the vinyl release. Of course, I've been incredibly and hilariously wrong about Quake announcements before ("Those rumors are bullshit! They wouldn't kick out a new Quake game so soon after Doom 2016...!") so we'll see whether or not my Gift of Prophecy is on the fritz again.

I mean, I can't imagine they'll have a section titled "a chat about the new remaster we're releasing" or anything like that. There's a few sections that are somewhat vague and could be a spot. We'll see either way. I don't think q1 remaster patches would interfere significantly with a q2 remaster. Nightdive is usually supporting quite a bit of different titles at a time with dedicated teams for each project.

Of course we don't know for certain other than there are a few hints that on their own don't mean much but taken as a whole It does point to a remaster of some kind

Well there is Yamagi Q2 source port that is pretty good. But yeah that is pretty much it when it comes to good and up to date ports afaik.

I think I've tried it. I guess it's fine but is pretty barebones iirc. I mean it's good to have ones like that but q1 has a source port for everyone and q2 has a community patch and/or yamagi. I guess you can sort of count rtx q2 but that's not playable for everyone

Which ones? Keep in mind the only channel they'd show it on is Bethesda Global.

There was a quake talk with machine games at one point,  various quake related segments, and an hour long outro on one of the dates. Could be revealed in any of these spots really.

Nightdive recently released a botched Blade Runner remaster just to get it out on film's 40th anniversary. Let's hope that's not the case with Quake II.

That was last year's schedule.

No, I was reading the schedule link you sent

Looks like the MachineGames thing is an interview with Jerk Gustaffson on the Bethesda Benelux channel, and they're probably not going to announce a big remaster thing on a regional channel. Everything else you mentioned also seems to be on other regional channels.

There is the possibility that that it's mentioned during the intro like "yeah, btw Q2 is updated and on all platforms, anyway here's Todd." The reason I'm guessing this is because Wolf3d also turned 30 this year (which is arguably a bigger deal) and there's bugger-all about that in the schedule either.

Actually, now that I mention it, where the hell is all the id stuff??

Based on the schedule it looks like nothing will be announced.  Has there ever been a no show at a QuakeCon in recent memory?  Just seems kinda silly to do all this stuff and not announce a single thing.  Is Wolf3 in deep in development hell?

Is it just me who thinks QuakeCon will remain a virtual event from now on? I just don’t see them bringing it back like it was in the past, global virus or not. QuakeCon hasn’t really been the same in a long time anyways even before the virus and they likely save a lot of money keeping it virtual or just flat out putting an end to it eventually. I could even see them going as far as giving a lame heartfelt speech one year and that’ll be when QuakeCon dies for good.

Of course, I hope I am wrong, and that QuakeCon of future years will up the ante a bit compared to the past few and this upcoming one.

I'm pretty sure they've done all their big AAA announcements for the moment at recent Xbox events.

MachineGames is working on an Indiana Jones game, and I wouldn't be shocked if that's their current focus.

Is a remaster for a 25 year old game really a big AAA announcement though? You know these things will at least get mentioned somewhere. Even if no remaster is coming idk why you would base it off of a schedule title. "Nothing that says quake 2 remaster guys, welp, that's it, pack it up". Of course we know at minimum they're gonna announce a q2 soundtrack release and they gotta do it somewhere

But when nothing comes from E3 then everyone says "well they would obviously do that at Quakecon!".  It is just sad that Id Software will be a no show for 2022.

As for Indiana Jones game - Did anyone ask for that?  I hope the poor reception of Youngblood didn't put Wolfenstein 3 further out (which was announced/hinted long before Indiana Jones).

I don't think anyone here is expecting a big AAA announcement - in the past those have happened at E3 with an almost completely information-free teaser and a "see more at Quakecon" caption. I just find it hard to believe that two pretty damn significant milestones in id's history will go unacknowledged.

Still, if nothing else, yamagiq2 now has native controller support, so there's that. Also my physical copy of Q1 for PS4 finally arrived today.

Nobody was asking for a fifth Indiana Jones movie either, as far as I am aware.

No, I distinctively remember the subject of a fourth Indiana Jones being brought up repeatedly in interviews and such over the decades prior to its official announcement. Now that people saw what happens when they are not careful what they wish for, I was under the impression that they have learned their lesson, but seeing how the fifth movie is in post-production as we speak, I guess not!

Who knows, maybe the MachineGames project is going to be released as a tie-in video game? Hopefully, it is going to be a Chronicles of Riddick type of situation where the game turns out to be not only better than the movie, but also an original story.

Yeah, I always find the "nobody asked for..." comment kind of odd. Fan feedback sometimes will provide impetus for a major creative work like a game or movie, but even if it is a factor it is but one of many. Even the ones people don't like or feel they don't "need", one or more persons in a position of power at some point went "Yes, this is an idea that will make money". Even if the logic is questionable by normal sane people.

When Ford was in his prime, sure, I think we all wanted more, but I didn't know anyone who was excited for a new Indy movie twenty years down the line. But aye, hindsight is 20/20, just not for Hollywood execs, it seems.

That's probably not a high bar, to be fair. I reckon the best we can hope for is a decent Uncharted clone.

I see it a lot in regards to music. If a band goes against the grain and changes their sound into something unexpected but well-recieved, fans will worship them for the fierce and astounding bravery they've shown by saying "fuck the fans/industry/money/fame, we only do what we want". If the band experiments with something and it doesn't work out well, the response is always "What the fuck, nobody asked for this! All you had to do was listen to the fans!".

In regards to Indie, Spielberg has always been a Hollywood director so I don't know how anyone could be surprised - Indie 5 is guaranteed to make money just because everyone will be watching it just to see if it's better than Indie 4, because if it's not that means they'll be able to go on Twitter and say "nobody asked for this (and Harrison Ford wears Depends!)". If it's even halfway decent, they'll go on Twitter and say "fuck yeah Spielberg didn't let the haters get him down (and Harrison Ford is still an ultra-badass with the body of a twenty-year old!)"

Anyway back on topic, I am 100% percent aware every hope I have for a Q2 remaster is wishful thinking but I must say if it doesn't happen I will be a bitter man.

Incidentally, The Farm 51 made an Allan Quatermain first-person shooter called Deadfall Adventures a while back.

It did not do well and I was so bored with the demo, I did not even bother finishing it.

Well, Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a commercial success, so clearly plenty of people wanted to see it anyway.

Also, I know performative outrage has become quite the cottage industry on the Internet, but still, you do not get so many intensely negative reactions to a movie if you are not at the very least a tiny bit excited to see it.

To be fair, Indy 4 *could " have been good, and honestly is for the most part, but it's direction was questionable and just didn't do much with it. Indy 5 is something that I think just will not be good lol, I can't see an 80 year old Indy making for a compelling action lead

I was hyped for Indy 4 in 2008. Loved the classics and it blew me away, that such classics would hit the modern age. :D

I hope they will announce "Quake reboot ... ahh yeah btw Nightdive has a Q2 Remaster for you".
