Dweller Dark Posted August 10, 2023 Oh. I thought you were talking about QuakeCon/the Q2 remaster going live. Was kind of confused until you clarified. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Midway64 Posted August 10, 2023 I also noticed the Quake II art in the GOG release being updated... Already miss the bright blue background of the original :( 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Midway64 Posted August 10, 2023 Sorry for the double post, but here's the difference between both: Spoiler Quad Damage! (Original) New gritty art. Also miss the cool subtitle. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
mhmh Posted August 10, 2023 The "new gritty art" is actually based on the original box art for the game from 1997, so it's good that they're going for an authentic look. "Quake II: Quad Damage" was a compilation box set of the base game plus it's mission packs; the Quake II equivalent of the "Quake: the Offering" set. That doesn't mean that the new version is not going to include the mission packs. More probably they're just going to package the lot under the plain "Quake II" title, just like what they did with Quake. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kinsie Posted August 10, 2023 Yeah, the "new" art is just the original box art minus the logo and with the background extended for more aspect ratios. Id have been using it on Steam and the PC Game Pass app for a while now. If they're updating the GOG art, hopefully that bodes well for them putting whatever they've got planned on there right from the start instead of with the lengthy delay the Doom and Quake 1 re-releases faced. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Midway64 Posted August 10, 2023 Oh damn that was unexpected. It's just that I have been used to the 'Quad Damage' variant of the art because I only own id Software games on GOG. Spoiler (Listen here Midway you dumbass, dare to make one more mistake and I'll rip your guts off.) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kinsie Posted August 10, 2023 Quad Damage was the name for a retail bundle Activision released back in the day, which GOG repurposed because they included all the same stuff from that bundle. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Midway64 Posted August 10, 2023 Yeah already realized, thanks for the cool cover art though. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheUltimateDoomer666 Posted August 10, 2023 It was also only called Quad Damage because it contained four items. The Linux version of the compilation omitted the Netpack, so it was called Colossus instead. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Midway64 Posted August 10, 2023 Oh that's interesting, I bet the omission of the Netpack was because of the modular nature of the Quake II engine. Speaking of that, how will they pull that one part off? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kyle07 Posted August 10, 2023 (edited) Nice to see hints, that the GOG version will be updated as well. I hope some sort of achievements will be there present. I'm happy that the subtitle "Quad Damage" gets removed on GOG. It always sounded like an addon, but it's only a compilation/collection. It is a little bit annoying, that I bought Q1 on Steam and Q2 on GOG. But in the end all what matters is the game itself, not the platform. :) I think till this day Wolfenstein 3D Spear of Destiny can be only purchased on GOG in Germany. But not on Steam. Steam has only the main game. I have to say, that I played Q1 and its 1997 expensions during last year. Now I would have the opportunity to continue with Dimension of the Past or the potential Q2 remaster. I think sticking with 1997 and play Q2 will be the better option. So returning to Dimension of the Past will have a better impact, like it had it in 2016. Edited August 10, 2023 by Kyle07 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I thought it is easily their best, tightest game post-John Romero; I do not care about Quake III, I did not like RAGE, Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal, and while I respect Doom 3, I find it a bit too bloated and unfocused. hybridial Posted August 10, 2023 Oh well, probably gonna end up buying it on all three consoles again. I wonder if they're packaging it with any new content. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

As I've had other people explain it to me, it's kind of the opposite of Quake in a lot of ways. Quake is lacking in polish and the balance is questionable in some ways, but the game is dripping in atmosphere and mystery. Quake II is very tight, neat, and polished, but lacks the atmosphere and consists of a lot of brown samey techbases without the mood to carry them. I've not personally played Quake II though and I am excited to jump on the remaster later today. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
