QuaketallicA Posted July 25, 2022 Depending on the day and my mood, I think I can range anywhere from purist to semi-modernist. Who doesn't enjoy the Brutal Doom and Project Brutality mods and complex projects of a similar scale form time to time? But most days, I'd say I lean moreso toward the vanilla side of things generally. I love the original iwads (in fact I was shocked to discover a lot of people don't like some parts of Doom 1 and 2), I'd say Plutonia is probably my all-time favorite wad, though I admit I have played D1 and 2 far more. I rarely ever use mouselook and jumping/crouching, unless it's with a gameplay mod like Brutal Doom or Complex Doom or something. I typically prefer maps that remain within the original engine limitations of not having rooms on top of rooms (sector limit-removing is fine) just because, if I wanted to go that route, I'd play almost any other game on the planet besides Doom that can already do that. I want a Doom mod to feel like a Doom mod. That's why for the most part I stay away from total conversions, which these days often feel like their own indie game built on the GZDoom engine rather than a mod. That's impressive for the creators, no doubt, but I want my Doom to look and play like Doom. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
QuaketallicA Posted July 25, 2022 Since others have added, I'll just say, I mainly use either GZDoom or DOSBox. Two extremes, perhaps, but GZDoom's always got you covered from how vanilla or crazy you want to get, and anywhere in between. But I use one of the older versions, 3.782 or something. I didn't like the direction they went after a couple recent updates. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I feel like project series like Joy of Mapping, DUMP, and RAMP should fill the niche for GZDoom speedmaps while the eccentric personal art projects is also well represented by stuff as varied as Mr. Friendly, Delaweare, or Lullaby. Or try Strange World Construction Site Nightshift Security Simulator (in ZDoom, or at least in software renderer mode). 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
TasAcri Posted July 25, 2022 (edited) I'm semi modernist. I want: High-resolution, 240fps, HD textures (that are true to the original art) smoother animation frames, dynamic lighting, dual analog gamepad support and even those new shadows GZDoom added recently, that grounds the enemy sprites a bit. I don't want: Texture filtering, HD textures that don't resemble the original ones, re-skinned monsters/weapons, re-skined status bar, jumping and looking up/down. GZDoom covers everything nicely for me. But if i want to scratch my nostalgia itch, i can always load Dosbox or some emulated console version of DOOM.
