Is Hall of Tortured Souls actually 3D?

Recommended Posts

Apparently old 3D games are mostly not actually 3D so... when i was watching this "creepy" game i thought to myself, is the game really 3D? i asked that first on one of the other discord servers (turned into if doom is 3d argument) so i wonder, is it really 3D?

That's BS. There are plenty of old games that are 3D. Like Battlezone was 3D and it was released in 1980. It's older than most people on this forum.

As for HOTS, the Excel 95 Easter egg game, it is a game like Doom. It's really 3D but with limitations. Your viewpoint is always horizontal, you cannot change your view pitch. Sectors can only have one floor and one ceiling heights, so no 3D structures like bridges; however 3D collisions are handled (you can climb up stairs up to a certain step height, you will fall down, etc.).

Ah, the ancient debate of "What counts as a dimension?"

If any given dimension can freely interact with any other given dimension, then no 2.5D FPS counts, as only X and Y can freely interact, while Z has very specific limitations. So how 3D these games are depends on whether you draw the line at arbitrary restrictions within a given dimension.

The fact that these sorts of engines' maps can be extrapolated into an actual 3D space using modern APIs makes it clear that the 2D map has height information embedded in it that translates directly to 3D space. The "realness" of a dimension could perhaps be defined by whether interaction between dimensions is arbitrarily restricted, which is a decent metric for delineating between 2.5D and 3D engines.
