UnknDoomer Posted July 19, 2022 (edited) First it was a book, now it's a game. "John Romero, co-creator of Doom and Quake, has announced that he and his studio Romero Games are working on a new first-person shooter (new IP) and are expanding their staff. According to the report, an agreement has already been reached with a certain large publisher, and the team is interested in attracting completely different specialists. Especially if they have experience with Unreal Engine 5. You can read more about this on the company's website. Romero himself assures that his project is "the new dawn of Romero Games."". Quote On April 29, 2016, John Romero cancelled Blackroom's Kickstarter campaign, which stopped at over $131,000, pausing it to develop a Blackroom demo and planning to show that and reopen the campaign in the future. In an interview on November 23, 2019, Romero claimed he was still working on Blackroom. As of September 2020, there has been no new public release on development. Blackroom redevelopment? Daikatana 2? Something else? Make your bet right here. Edited July 19, 2022 by UnknDoomer 28 Quote Share this post Link to post

Mr Masker Posted July 19, 2022 Yeah they're making this new IP called, like, "Doom" or something. I dunno if it'll get past the first entry, but I'm interested to see where it goes. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr. Freeze Posted July 19, 2022 I've heard this ever since Blackroom defrauded everyone was cancelled. Don't believe the hype until you get a release date. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheFocus Posted July 19, 2022 oh man, i'm very hyped. 1. it's Romero 2. it's on a high-tech new engine 3. i'm assuming this will be pretty big budget i can't wait to see what this is. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Redneckerz Posted July 19, 2022 I want this, but i also wanted Blackroom and that never went anywhere. So as much i love John, this needs a reveal and a steady stream of information. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Somniac Posted July 19, 2022 Interested in what he does. I'm sure we'd all love to see John continue to crank out Doom levels every now and then, but he does have to look forward also. I remember Daikatana kind of floppped, or was misunderstood in its day at least. I never played it myself. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Kizoky Posted July 19, 2022 What happened to that game he was teasing years ago? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
xScavengerWolfx Posted July 19, 2022 I figure he would make Sigil 2 before tossing out a new IP and i doubt it will be another Daikatana game. But they, anything is possible i guess. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Ludi Posted July 19, 2022 I love John, but I'm VERY skeptical considering 1) He hasn't made a new stand-alone game in 2 decades 2) His last game was Daikatana Rather than a new IP, I'd love to see a remake of Daikatana that smooths over all the rough spots. Remaking a bad game is infinitely more interesting than remaking a lauded classic, in my opinion. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post

Thelokk Posted July 19, 2022 (edited) Sigh... can we just have Sigil 2, pretty please? He sure has made a lot of games since Daikatana, whether they are actually *good* games... I don't know. Empire of Sin was pretty trash to be honest, haven't played the rest. Edited July 19, 2022 by Thelokk 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
deleted-account Posted July 19, 2022 ...Wasn't he working on a new Doom II megawad recently? What's the current state of that project now with this new IP in the works? Not to mention, didn't his previous FPS with Adrian Carmack fall-out a few years ago? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Not to mention, didn't his previous FPS with Adrian Carmack fall-out a few years ago? I'd assume he's likely finished 'SIGIL 2' at this point, and is in the polish-up phase. But who knows. AFAIK, the Doom WADs are largely solo projects of Romero's, so it's not as though 'SIGIL 2' being unreleased precludes him from prepping for the next company-wide project. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Artman2004 Posted July 19, 2022 (edited) This will probably either end up going nowhere or end up as the next "failed comeback" story. Just because a big name is attached to it, doesn't guarantee it being good. (No offense to Romero.) Edited July 19, 2022 by Artman2004 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Goat-Avenger Posted July 19, 2022 If the engine was going to free/open source, I'd be interested. That doesn't seem likely with Unreal Engine 5 though.. You could probably get a crack team of experienced hackers and just squish the bullet physics engine with the Doom 3 engine, make some changes as needed, and still produce something pretty impressive, and mod-worthy... It'd be nice if Zenimax would have GPLed RAGE's engine... Intelectual Property, bleh.. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
NoahRules Posted July 19, 2022 i heard a rumor that this new game is gonna be about a space marine fighting demons on mars, but that sounds ridiculous 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

I feel like I don't need to do any research to say with decent enough confidence that it didn't sell amazingly well either.
