Another "John Romero is about to make..." thread

Recommended Posts

I think it would make sense if he will call this "new" game as "Blackroom" again, EVEN if it will be made from scratch. People just got hyped back in the day and they're got angry when Blackroom just disappeared.

Plus, it's not something new in game industry. See "Prey" (I mean, Prey 1997 & 2006), for example.

h. it's sad to see blackroom go into indefinite hiatus :/

If the trailer says something like, "FROM THE CO-CREATOR OF DOOM" I'm gonna get some serious Outer Worlds flashbacks.

I'm most hyped from what will be next from Hugo Martin than John Romero at this moment, with Blackrooms I don't know if he can delivers a more expansive game.

Hopefully I'm wrong and the experience he got from old days and new indies developers gave him a better insight on how to approach to new games.

In a good or bad way?

Mixed. The Outer Worlds isn't a bad game at all, however... Its biggest mistake was it's marketing. The game was announced during the great screw up of Fallout 76, with not only the text, "from the developers of Fallout New Vegas" which shoots up the game's expectations quite a bit considering how beloved New Vegas is to myself and many others... but also says, "from the original creators of Fallout" which, especially during 76's launch, gives so many conotations whether they were intentional or not.

Source

When the game launched, it was good, but the expectations were ranked so high that it kinda screwed itself over from the start. No matter what, people were gonna compare it to Fallout 2 and New Vegas, and honestly, I can't completely blame them.

This isn't me saying this'll happen to this new Romero game, I'm just explaining my perspective shown in the earlier post

TL;DR: Fine game, self destructive marketing. Not saying the same will happen here.

I'll be getting some hardcore Back 4 Blood/"FROM THE CREATORS OF LEFT 4 DEAD" vibes and that is a helluva red flag.

The difference is that Hugo Martin disappointed people with post release content of his second game, while John Romero had a good career for at least 10 years before he made Daikatana.

If they are working with a major publisher and actively hiring, it does seem like a more serious effort in the past.

About Blackroom....I wonder if that was because there was a falling out with Adrian? It makes sense anyway.

But delivered a better evolution from Doom 2016 to Eternal, where in a new complete game can expand the gameplay or do a really different stuff, i really like that kind of diversity.

It's a poster hiring people. In what way does it represent the actual game?

Like "A.McGee's Bad Day L.A" type of stuff.

Comparing something that you haven't even seen to that travesty seems a bit far fetched.

Did you all get blasted with an amnesia ray gun and collectively forget about all the cool things Romero made post-Daikatana? While the jaded frustration over the continued silence over the fate of Blackroom is understandable, I'm a little disappointed to see a fair amount of you just roll your eyes and make "Daikatana 2" jokes towards this announcement of Romero working on a new game. Your cynicism would make sense if he literally hadn't done anything after Daikatana flopped and has only just now popped back into existence after 20-odd years. I shouldn't need to remind you all that Romero has made other successful games in his career since, including Sigil which was of course really well-received and we were all hyped for Sigil 2 only a little while ago.

Who pissed in your cornflakes, guys?

glad im not the only one who feels this way

+1

I never felt as depressed here as now, reading the reactions on this thread. And people are still using "Daikatana" as an argument to shit on Romero (a game that's not even that bad, imo). I mean, that was over 20 years ago. For fuck sake, get over it.

The whole "bad gaem" parroting is just pathetic in my eyes and shows how internet memes can rotten people's brains sometimes.

Yeah how could i have personal judgement, that's a no-no.

Back on the topic. I hope  John gets a lead role in the development of this, something, my doubts are on the people who are gonna work with him.

I'm not denying you personal judgement, I'm saying that you're judging something based on something that in no way represents that thing in any way. You haven't even seen the game.

On topic, I'm actually really looking forward to see what Romero has in store for us. It's been a really long time since he worked on an FPS.

So has Romero said anything about the whole "new dawn" thing? Empire of Sin might not be the greatest start, but it does not look terrible either.

It just seems weird to me to act as if the game does not count.

I respect John R, he has made some silly mistakes but he has got the heart and spirit.

I hope he can pull it off, with the "retro renaissance" currently booming it would be great to see some of the legendary old guards come in and make something of it.

I will watch with interest, cautiously.

We call that a "hot take" and 4000 degrees kelvin it certainly was, I don't understand the how, why and where you drummed it up from but you are free to make judgements.

However if you want to make a harsh judgement on something so miniscule then expect to be also be judged in the same manor.
