Just rediscovered my extensive notes for this WAD.

I got so excited when I saw you post this, then started looking for a "next page" button of some kind. Then I realized you were being snarky XD

I'm curious now, does this mean you had just these basic notes, and the you built the entire rest of the wad "on the fly", just coming up with ideas and modifying the maps as you went?

I guess It depends on what you mean by "on the fly." I had a lot of ideas in my head for how I wanted it to look, I just didn't write any of it down. But was also a lot of just going into the maps and changing things as I went. But yeah, I just kinda winged it, mostly.

I'm curious, if you stumbled upon "no player start" error by accident then what was the original ending you had in mind?

Personally, on the contrary, it doesn't go well for me when I write something down and try to stick to a plan and schedule. To be exact, obviously, it is necessary somehow to fix the main idea, but if you try to write out something in detail or even draw on a piece of paper a whole map plan, for me personally, it is likely to end up in nothing. Often my mapping is something where I'm just like, "Oh shit, I'll make a super cool room here, and here's awesome light will fall here, here some monster will be waiting for the player" and stuff like that. While I'm sketching these things out on the fly in the builder itself on completely random emotional and inspirational bursts (I often have no idea in what setting I'll be mapping, creating a new project), little by little my map starts to form and I start to understand exactly what I want to see from it in the end. And when that turning point comes - that's when I start to work it out very hard and verify everything as precisely as possible.

@YourOpinionsAreWRONG Oh, and yes, I don't remember if I mentioned it somewhere or not, but you've done an amazing job that did not leave indifferent me and many other people I've recommended it to.

@YourOpinionsAreWRONG Hello! As someone who really enjoys this type of horror put into games, especially Doom, I really enjoyed this wad. It's hard to choose between this and Lilith, but I have to say that I have been impressed.

So much so, that I've done, to my knowledge, the first ever speedrun of this wad!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEbf3NuB1iQ

Episode 1 (whole wad) UV-Speed in 5:46.

Now, I'm curious. Are you planning on uploading this to idgames? Considering episode 1 is shareware, I'd assume that they won't mind giving this wad a shot. The reason why I'm asking is that usually, for a wad to be also uploaded to DSDA (Doom Speed Demo Archive), it's recommended for the wad to make it through the idgames verification process and be on there (to avoid legal trouble). I would appreciate an answer regarding this: whether you've tried before with no success, or haven't bothered trying yet... I'd still like to know.

The door that does the "oh no i edited it wrong in doombuilder" stutter thing was so jarring lmao, great detail, loving it so far

Interesting experience. Very freaky.

I did play on Doom strict and ran into a hard-lock on E1M6

My first post here on Doomworld; just wanted to say that this wad unsettled and downright panicked me in a way no other has (yes, including MyHouse). Something about the slow corruption of a familiar scenario and things just being subtly (and later, not so subtly) wrong really got into my head. I've always found game glitches to be creepy, so all the missing textures and broken doors and the music abruptly cutting off was extremely effective. And the ending just gets more powerful the more I think about it. Incredible work, OP, if you're still paying attention to this thread.

Very interesting concept! I love this kind of stuff. I can tell you were inspired by The Caretaker and DOOM: The Way We Remember It.

The music was a nice touch, too.

That was quite the ride. Is it supposed to error and end with `no player 1 start` for E1M8?

Spoiler

E1M8 ends with the players death. Since two maps get merged in Doomguy's brainrot and the roster gets shifted down one slot, there is no 'E1M8' to access; Doomguy is dead. Hence 'player 1 start not found'

Awesome. That kind of meta game ending did cross my mind but I wanted to be sure. I opened it in Slade wondering what the empty E1M8 file was about and that was the only conclusion

I defeated it, misleading title, 0/10.

Just kidding! I really liked it. It's fun to see this kind of trick applied to familiar classic Doom maps.

It was a fun wad, makes good use of restraint as not to detract from the premise as many similar projects for other games or works have. I have to admit "The Doomguy has dementia" doesn't make for a very mature sounding premise (don't know if anyone else is familiar with Everywhere At The End Of Funk but if you are, my condolences), with how the wad doesn't really specifically point to or imply anything like that it may as well not even exist for the purposes of the wad which is to its benefit, but that also means that it kind of just serves to remove ambiguity in a not particularly interesting way in my opinion. I got a bit annoyed as the unreadable mazes by the end but E1M8 was poignant and my favorite part.

Absolute Masterpiece. 9.5/10

The way the levels slowly morphed into disjoint nightmares actually made me feel kinda unsettled. And when the monsters disappeared, the levels really felt like liminal spaces. The soundtracks are also pretty similar to everywhere at the end of time. The last track, in particular reminds me a lot of the last track of EATEOT, "Place in the world fades away". The disappearance of static, the sad remake of Sign of Evil and of course the hell of unsettling "no player start found" parallel that track almost perfectly.

Hey, guys!!!

So next Tuesday is actually the one-year anniversary of The Thing you can't Defeat! So to celebrate, I thought I'd do a live stream!

Not gonna be anything too exciting, just gonna be playing some Doom WADs. So if you have any suggestions for what I should play, let me know! (Keeping in mind, I have already played MyHouse haha)

So yeah, if you're interested, It's gonna start on July 25th at 7:30pm GMT on the YourOpinionsAreWRONG youtube channel.

Hope to see you there!!!

The creator exaggerated the symptoms of dementia to add to the games theatrics. The distorted picture of a man walking through a tunnel depicts more accurately how a patient in the later stages of dementia sees the world.
