magicsofa Posted July 26, 2022 (edited) Wow... rest in peace, as someone who registered here in frickin 1999 and also just a really cool person, he really lived up to his chosen name. His final post is of his son's first time seeing the ocean... what a heart-wrenchingly beautiful ending to his Doomworld career... On 7/16/2022 at 9:01 PM, Megalyth said: His first time seeing the ocean. Not sure if he was reenacting Exodus or something, but he was very excited. Rudolph Posted July 26, 2022 (edited) Oh no! :( I admit, I actually did not know (or at least remember) who Megalyth was, so I had to look him up and I saw that he contributed to projects that I very much liked, such as the The Way Id Did (including that awesome Commander Keen-themed secret level alongside Xaser Acheron!) and the Switcheroom mapsets. I will forever be grateful to him for all the entertainment he provided us with his expertly-designed Doom levels. If there is an afterlife, I hope it is treating him well. I hope you will be fine too, Sam. Edited July 26, 2022 by Rudolph 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Redneckerz Posted July 26, 2022 I am not going to start this with the expected responses: Sorry for your loss and my condolences. Every user expresses themself in their own way, so instead, i want to focus on the kind of designer Megalyth were. The DoomWiki on Megalyth lists the following: Spoiler Body of work 2002 Pot City (Doomworld/idgames) Master (Doomworld/idgames) (with Stephen McGranahan (SoM)) 2009 Toke It Up! (Official site) MAP02, MAP04 & MAP06 (with Toke) 2011 Doom the Way id Did (Doomworld/idgames) E2M7: Ore Processing 2013 Esselfortium's Birthday Cave (Doomworld/idgames) Lakeside (Doomworld/idgames) TTVZone! Collection 1 (Doomworld forums thread) MAP27: Nukage Hanger Processing Command Base MAP35: Oh God, Spiders Doom 2 the Way id Did (Doomworld/idgames) MAP21: Passage to Exile MAP31: Vorticon (with Xaser Acheron) Doomworld Mega Project 2013 (Doomworld/idgames) MAP20: Have a Soup and a Sandwich 2014 Switcheroom (Doomworld/idgames) E4M1: They That Dwell Within 2015 Plutonia 1024: The Plutinya Experiment (Doomworld/idgames) MAP13: Burgalveist Joe-Ilya's Birthday night (Doomworld/idgames) MAP10: Donal Logue Countergoat Initiative (Doomworld/idgames) MAP25: Pot City 50 Shades of Graytall (Doomworld/idgames) MAP03: The Gray, the Blu, and the Trakly 2016 Rayzik's Birthday Gauntlet (Doomworld/idgames) 2017 megalyth-town-wip (Doomworld forums thread) Switcheroom: The Forgotten Maps (Doomworld/idgames) E1M3: Hell Plant (with Micah Petersen (Jaws in Space)) 2018 Doom 64 for Doom II (Doomworld/idgames) MAP18: Dark Entries 2019 The Garden of Guns (Doomworld forums thread) 2020 Switcheroom 2 (Doomworld/idgames) MAP09: Starport MAP21: Dark Descent MAP31: Wolfenstein's Monster Megalyth was a designer who took part into some of the more memorable mapsets of the nu-Doom era - The most obvious one being Doom 1 and 2 the way id Did, but also Switcheroom, Doom 64 for Doom II, 50 Shades of Graytail. To me they demonstrate a desire and passion for re-envigorating the classics to a newer standard, whilst breathing in the oxygen of those very same classics. To me it demonstrates a knack for endearing and intricate level design, playing a part in the minds of many mappers. Megalyth's maps influence others. So this isn't a final goodbye in my book. Throughout his levels, Megalyth's influence will shine on, having now become part of Doom's legacy. You will be missed, Megalyth.@Mamalyth please share your gofundme and everything else that may help you and your relatives in these difficult times. 8 Quote Share this post Link to post

MTrop Posted July 26, 2022 Megalyth was an inspiration - an omnipresent fixture in the Doom Community who always spoke through his work. His absence will be felt. My condolences to you and your family. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Ralphis Posted July 26, 2022 Sam, I'm so sorry to hear about this. I can't imagine what you and your son are, and will be, going through. Megalyth came into the community around the same time as me in the late 90s and I'm really at a loss for words here. He was a thoughtful dude that contributed to this community in a lot of ways. His legacy here will live on through his work and the relationships he made. My thoughts are with your family. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mamalyth Posted July 26, 2022 7 hours ago, Alfonzo said: I'm so sorry, Sam. My sincere condolences. I can't claim to have known Megalyth all that well, but we exchanged quite a few stories and messages back in the day and would sometimes hit each other up for chats over Skype. This is about ten years ago, now. I still remember the first time we called each other to discuss something other than the game Doom... we spent an hour or two talking about some of the pie-in-the-sky activities we were hoping to do or thinking of doing in the future. I remember it well because it was when I was first finding my feet in the community and we were both getting caught up in the excitement of contributing to something "big", as things go here on Doomworld. Megalyth made me feel welcome, and, among all the names and aliases that I would come to know over the years, he remained one of the few that I actually spoke with... just for the sake of having a chat. Megalyth was an integral part of one of the most celebrated creations of this community in 2011/2012, Doom The Way id Did, and I would sometimes look to his works during development as we shared many similar goals... and also because he was doing a damn sight better job of meeting some of them than I was! There's a great deal to admire about his creative works. We also often played duels together and tested each other's stuff. He contributed one of the most regularly played duel maps during the development of a multiplayer level pack called CGI in 2015. This map — Pot City — is also his first credited work uploaded to the archives from way back in 2002. It's very silly, but we had a running gag for many years that we would some day together create a Scatman John sound replacement mod for the game. Something to the effect of hearing random "bee-bop!" and "skee-bap!" sounds every time you interacted with anything in the game world. I think we both knew it was more funny in theory than it would be in practice, so we were happy to leave it at that. And so we will. Rest in peace, buddy. He has told me about the skat man john Idea. If you ever do max would play it he has as much passion for Doom as his Daddy. They would watch replays on YouTube before bed. 17 Quote Share this post Link to post

cannonball Posted July 26, 2022 Megalyth always came across as a decent person on here, and he produced some of the highlights from the only Wad we both partook in (Switcheroom 2). He certainly left his impression on the community with the broad spectrum of wads he worked on He will be sorely missed from this community and I can only hope that you and your son are getting all the support you need at this time. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Uncle 80 Posted July 26, 2022 My sincerest condolences. Losing a parent at only 7 is a horrible thing :( I hope and pray you and your son have a caring family around to help you somehow get through this. "Megalyth" has always been a positive presence on these boards for the 20+ years I have been here. Love 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Stupid Bunny Posted July 26, 2022 Megalyth struck me as a good and fun dude, his commentary was pithy and forthright and he was one of my favorite folks to see around in any thread. And what a prolific contribution of cool maps he gave us. I'm stunned that he's gone now, I can't imagine what you and the rest of the family are feeling. It's hard to take in always, I wish you the best through this and know that he was well-loved here. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
