Overboard - 6 map island hopping adventure (now on idgames!)

Recommended Posts

Hi moudly. I'm a big fan of Going Down, so this was a nice surprise. I hit the map05 issue with dsda-doom too, but here's fda attempts for all the other maps. The final runs have me derping around at the end trying to find all the secrets (couldn't find a few of them). https://drive.google.com/file/d/1x4JrgbaAjRtzM6bLtQ9XI6le2Jrx94_q/view?usp=sharing

I definitely want to come back to this and learn the maps a bit better, and try out the new game plus mode.

A vacation I don't need to burn up PTO on? Far too kind of you. Only played map01 to get a taste. Will probably wait for the next release before I break out the sunscreen, hawaiian shirt and sandals but I think I'm going to enjoy this one.

I suspected that would be the case, I just found it odd that this glitch happens in map02, but works fine in map10 (The NG+ version). I suspect a little trial and error on the sector blocking access to the boat would fix this. Those type of sectors have a habit of misbehaving and can break in certain ports if you are working with sectors that share a linedef with the sector in question.

Fixed this and other problems and updated the link. Should work ok in dsda doom now (fingers crossed).

Thanks for the fda's, I will watch those with a cup of tea. I should have fixed the problem with dsda doom now. Hopefully. I don't even know what was wrong, but moving a bunch of points around seems to have done the trick

Finished it. Loved it. There's just this overwhelming sense of things spiralling out of control at every turn, constant rising acting. Just delicious stuff.

The Mob Closets when you triggered them in sequence (or each with a slight time offset, voodoo doll?) rather than all at once, extremely intimidating! Great trick.

Probably the most ferocious Map02 I think I've ever played that wasn't a slaughter set, though it kind of is from Map2 on.  "Cacatoa" would be very high on my list of most hilarious maps names, if I had one.

Got a giggle out of the True Ending.

Spoiler

Gasp! It's a prequel! The Expanded Going Down Universe let's GO!

Didn't even give me time to find my sandals. Well, the vacation begins.

Well, what a holiday this is!

I'll have to put this on my "must play" list, I enjoyed the part of Going Down that I've been able to play so far, I'm excited to play this one, thanks Cyriak!

Currently wrapping up another wad playthrough, but just had to check out Map01. This looks adorable and charming for all the reasons Going Down is.. but it’s also got a bright blue sky and beachy theme. Absolutely incredible combo, doomcute + violence + beaches is such a jam!

I absolutely love this wad and it came out of nowhere. Not to give you a big head but I think you're probably the best mapper out there IMO. Just endless creativity. I hope it's not another 8 years till we see more of your work but I understand we all got commitments in the real world. Anyway this was a holiday that I really needed, all the best.

Adored the NG+ versions of these maps as well. Thanks again for the violent and whimsical fun. :)
Here's a silly Tyson playthrough of Map01, at @baja blast rd.'s suggestion: ob01t220.zip (recorded on 5-08 version)

This is an absolutely phenomenal return to form, @mouldy! You haven't lost your touch in the slightest, mate. It's a terrific romp that anyone familiar with your madcap intensity will appreciate for aeons to come. The combat was constantly thrilling, deadly and challenging; the level design's top-notch and I adore all the DoomCute boats and especially the submarine, which was subsequently my favourite map. Never thought I'd live to see you make a return to the community with a new WAD, let alone one with a brand new soundtrack. It's an explosive barrel of laughs bursting with creativity and madness!

thanks for the playthroughs, I will try and watch them, although watching people play doom gives me mad motion sickness so I have to do it in moderation

Welcome back! Super fun and creative mapset, great music, played it in one sit. Might make a nautical themed wad myself someday  :)

Hey I had a fantastic time playing this last night!  Maps aren't too long and only took me about an hour to get through, but there's a lot packed into here!  You did quite a bit with the island hopping theme, with boats, volcanic islands, hell portal upside-down islands, ww2 era bunkers, the freaking submarine... and I loved the concept of having to stop off and grab your fuel to keep going.  All the doomcute and little animations and stuff added up to a very entertaining, polished experience.  And that's not even talking about the combat, which got pleasantly challenging and spicy at points, with lots of fun traps and harrowing encounters on UV.  I never finished Going Down since I dropped off for whatever reason, but this is definitely reminding me to go back because it has some of the same hallmarks of design.  Glad to see you back and looking forward to more if you decide to make more stuff!

Filling out the customer satisfaction survery. 5/5 imps! I really enjoyed playing maps 1 through 7. Saving NG+ for another day, but I really enjoyed playing through these and can't wait to run them!

Just finished the normal lineup on UV and beat the first map's NG+. Super fun! Like Going Down before it, this got chaotic quick. It seems like running away from your problems just causes more and more enemies to pop up. Map 2 was basically full panic as soon as I tried to grab the gas cannister. That being said, I didn't die until map 4, and even then I just died 1 time per map after, though there were a lot of close scrapes. The maps themselves were super concise and textured very nicely. Loved the various bits of doomcute and toilets, lol. I think map 5's aesthetic was my fav, as I wasn't expecting that inverse world; it was really cool. And of course, I didn't find map 6's BFG until after I had already killed everything on the map. The NG+ version of map 1 was really fun too. The differences between the 2 versions was cool, and I was glad it wasn't just monster swaps. Different weapons and locations of items was a nice touch, plus changing the entire basement fight was cool. I really liked how the crusher down there worked completely differently from the original.

So overall, this was incredibly fun! Super glad you came back to mapping! Short but sweet.

Just did a run through this on Hurt Me Plenty (UV is probably out of my range, especially in the NG+ loop) - excellent, tightly designed and funny maps all. As we've come to expect from the galaxy-brain beyond Going Down.

The only complaint I have is that it ends. I'm hoping it won't be years before your next release! This one's an easy Cacoward nomination, I'd say.

Edit: My favourite joke was the cheeky bastard last Archvile on Archi-pelago who skips on the final fight and just sneaks off with his luggage packed.

Just finished a UV playthrough of this and had a blast! Super fun gameplay, excellent visuals, and creative settings. A few fun laugh out loud moments too, like the submarine map and general toilet shenanigans.

Great stuff. I really liked the New Game+ mode, would love to see more short mapsets do something similar.

The humour and Doomcute have got me smiling from ear-to-ear.

The combat has got me sweating, but scraping through by the skin of my teeth every encounter.

The ways you're manipulating the playspace, even from a layman/newbie mapper's perspective, have got me pausing in sheer goddamned awe.

And I'm cycling through these three emotions multiple times per map at a breakneck pace.

You, sir, are a treasure.

Welcome back.

thanks for the feedback and videos everyone. I've been watching people play new game plus and think I might make a few tweaks on a couple of maps, but I'll wait before doing an update in case anyone finds more broken stuff.

So, I managed to beat first 5 maps from pistol start without saving. Very enjoyable.

I do feel like having MAP04 and MAP05 together was not a great idea because they both are just one arena, but it seems to be just the kind of maps you like to make.

Love the gimmick of the exit at the start, best gimmick ever.

Cool stuff - I hear a lot of good things - I was excited to take the whole set on this morning but real life stuff came up --- I only had time for map 1 lol - but will be back for more - I like what I see here kudos

I liked the first 3 maps, but the final 3 were a bit too hectic and chaotic for my taste. I didn't enjoy playing those as a result.

Fun concept overall though.

7/10
