The Doom Hint Book from order.frm

I have an install of Doom 1.666 from the four floppy disks on my PC, I opened up the order.frm file in that folder out of curiosity (best to open it in Notepad, Word/Wordpad won't format it correctly). Aside from being able to order Doom for $40, you could order the Doom Hint Book for $15 (and a Doom T-Shirt for $15).

 

Has anyone seen one of these Doom Hint Books? Was it something that id whipped up or was it outsourced to another company? What kind of hints are in it?

I know growing up I had an Ultimate Doom player guide that had like all kinds of info in it including how many shots from each weapon would kill each demon. it had the map layouts and things. I dunno if that's the same thing though. I Don't recall it having the "totally unauthorized tips and secrets" text on the front though.

Considering id itself was saying to ask about the hint book, an unauthorized strategy guide would not be it.

 

After all, presumably the one id was advertising would be the authorized one.

 

Instead, it's almost certainly this one.

 

And this one is the Doom II equivalent.

 

Final Doom never got an official one, but it did get an unofficial one.

 

EDIT: As it turns out, the "Id STUFF" programs that were on some of their mid-90s releases confirms that the one I linked is the one for the original Doom.
