DeathWolf1982 Posted September 5, 2022 For example there could be FreeDukeNukem3D, FreeBlood, FreeShadowWarrior, FreeRedneckRampage, etc. imagine the monster sprites, the maps, and the sounds. I'd see FreeBlood with a Caleb lookalike killing Zombies with Hatchets and Shotgun Cultists with black robes running around in a cemetery. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted September 5, 2022 I imagine it'd be a ton of work creating all these assets. I also imagine that the FreeHeretic (Blasphemer) and FreeHexen (Zauberer) projects we have on here are still missing a lot of stuff, and even Freedoom has stuff that is considered placeholder. I further imagine that most people who have the skill and time and motivation to create a ton of brand-new assets would rather use these precious things to make their own stuff instead of cloning other people's games. As an aside I imagine that people who have attempted to create FreeBuild games have been forcibly discouraged from continuing. I lastly imagine we have had threads like this already. :p 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Blood has a LOT of content to replace, just Caleb's sprite needs a plenty amount of time to make a Free version. About maps, it uses his own map editor that is DOS Only, although somebody made a modern map builder, it seems pretty uncomplete. Also, since the source code was never released (the alpha source code was not oficially released), distribuing a free version can be legally debatable (idk if actually affects, but is good to keep in mind that). I'm not trying to discourage you. Just letting you know where are you go into. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Redneckerz Posted September 5, 2022 There was Dave3D in the past. I imagine Gez already linked to this, and it seems i was correct. Also OP: A little more body to your threads may not hurt. Imagine that. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

A while ago when a similar topic was discussed at Duke4.net Forums, I proposed to use original assets from The AMC Squad at least as placeholders for a hypothetical Build engine game prototype. I believe that, give the permission of The AMC Squad's authors would be obtained, it'd be possible to throw together a working demo in a reasonable time frame. I think I would try doing that myself if I had time (also considering that I have very little prior experience in modding Build games, and no mapping experience at all). There's nBlood, which is a clean-room faithful recreation based on EDuke32 code, which is possibly even a better option than using a direct source port (if the source code were available) to create a free replacement type of game. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
