Need some Doom 1 Wad suggestions.

Recommended Posts

No End in Sight by NaturalTvventy, Xaser and Lutz is top tier Ultimate Doom.  If anyone plays just one megawad for Ultimate Doom, make it this one. It was good enough to become an official add-on alongside Deathless.

Other megawads for Ultimate Doom I have that I'd recommend:

  • 2002: A Doom Oddysey. A much older UD Megawad, this one has a sequel planned to come out this year, thus getting through it might be a neat warmup
  • Ultimate Needs More Detail. Three episode classic megawad
  • The Beginning of the End Part 1 and Part 2. Two wads that together make three episodes for Ultimate Doom, made by the main guy behind No End in Sight above
  • Ultimate Doom the way id Did combined with Doom the way id Did for four episodes of mimicking id software's design
  • Wonderful Doom, a remix of all of Ultimate Doom. Everything feels familiar, yet doesnt..
  • Doom the way id did: Lost Episodes. 6 episodes of the leftover maps from DTWID's devlopment. Maybe one day we'll also get the maps from its sequel. Maybe one day.
  • Base Ganymede Complete. Three episodes for Ultimate Doom. The lack of level names irks me, but I beleive it won awards
  • Doom: Damnation. Four episode megawad released last year.
  • Enjay Doom: Pretty much the first ever Megawad ever made, and surprisingly good for its age
  • Heroes: Four episodes made from random Ultimate Doom maps stitched together as some kind of frankenstein, basically someone putting together what he fet was the best of the best of the community output back then

If your very forgiving towards really old content, I'd also recommend Lost Episodes of Doom, a 3 episode wad that was originally sold on disc, the author of the first half of the wad later contributed to the Master Levels. Many dislike his maps, but I have a soft spot for his designs.

Almost a year ago I posted a similar topic, looking for the best Ultimate Doom megawads. I will link it here, because there is some great wads listed there.

Also seconding @Devalaous' little list up there.

I’d also like to recommend recently released Solar Struggle (… not the least because I made one of the maps :P)

I entirely forgot about Concerned, Lunar Catastrophe, Death Tormention and the [X]inity trilogy, and I have them all on Doom Launcher. Whoops.

Solar Struggle you say? Thank you for the heads up. I will look at this myself. Cheers

I don't even know whether I have played all of these. Lunar Catastrophe definitely yes, as it is one of my all time faves. I hope @Miss Bubbles makes a sequel.

^ highly Recommended. I'm more of a Doom 2 mapper but Stickney Installation is a great old school style of Doom 1 replacement ep. As of this comment Snax just dropped Ep. 3.

If you've not played it yet, Sigil's really cool too. Jimmy's soundtracks sublime but if you pay on Romero's website the Buckethead soundtracks just as good, I like to switch them round.

Happy to hear that! A sequel will happen some day. We've both been busy with life and other endeavors the past few years, but @Count651 and I will always love Doom, and when the passion strikes and the opportunity presents itself, we will put something together.

Solar Struggle, a superb UD megawad released this year:

Also, be sure to check out both Doom Odysseys by PCorf, both instant classics in my book!
