Grand Scheme of the Martian Gods - vanila map in DOOM format.

Recommended Posts

Grand Scheme of the Martian Gods is a side experiment for me - to create non-linear, vanilla map in DOOM format. Surprisingly enough, not many thing got scrapped to get working in vanilla (but at the same time i spent a lot of time fighting with save buffer overload).

  • DOOM format map;
  • Vanila compatible;
  • Tested in Chocolate Doom, prboom(-complevel 9) and GZDoom;

  • Difficulty settings are implemented;

  • Map slot Map01;
  • Built in 12 days;
  • Around 25-30 minutes of gameplay;

Beaten in about 20 min on UV, very solid map here, plenty of places to go, not too linear, and action around almost every corner. Some ambushes too. Only got two of the secrets but killed all monsters. Music I've heard before. Doesn't get too grating for the amount of time played.

There are quite a few things about the aesthetics that bothered me but I'll highlight some of the bigger issues I noticed:

Possible middle texture floating here.

This was one of my favorite encounters. You can stray next to the linedef and the whole floor can go down without you, though.

Look out for the upper and lower textures next to the switches like this.

Sharp corners like this are quite jarring, and there are more than a few in the map.

There are all sorts of cool details in this map and this one's no exception. However, it could be better if it was lined up with the bricks better, otherwise it's odd how clean it looks. There also seems to be a different brightness on one of the fallen bricks.

While the aesthetics can be all over the place, it was a relatively fun 20 minutes regardless, nice work!

I just finished it, 26 minutes on UV, I died one time.

The map is really well balanced, and I must say that the fights were challenging.

In fact I'm generally not a fan of single longs maps that demand more than 15 or 20 minutes to be beaten, but this one gave me a good taste in mouth :)

Usually i keep eye on those things, but this time i'm primarily tested map with Chocolate Doom and because of low resolution it was not so noticeable. Thanks for highlighting these issues.

A demo I just did. Nicely expansive techbase effort with a nice command of space noted. There was a moment when a Revenant megapunch killed me near the secret Supercharge on the way back I had to rewind though. Honestly, I don't have lots of time and that's why I went fast. Nice to see that it wasn't just pacifist smooth sailing, although I did try to kill the majority of enemies, (but fuck that pain elemental near the east SS).

Very intense techbase with non-stop combat and exciting progression. It's one of those kind of maps where the foot is slammed on the gas pedal and refuses to let up until absolutely everything is dead as demons pour out of just about every conceivable monster closet written in the book. As others have noted, you kept things pretty well balanced with health distribution. My only criticism of note is that the choice of midi is a bit too short as it loops far too often to the point of it becoming a little tedious. I'd suggest using a longer piece for sure. Besides that, excellent work!
