Devalaous Posted September 14, 2022 (edited) Hell Revealed ----------------------- Hell Revealed is a megawad, a 32-level replacement for DooM II, created by Yonatan Donner and Haggay Niv. In Hell Revealed, you will find: 32 new high-quality very detailed levels, many new graphics including textures, flats, skies, status bars and others, full skill-level support and additional attention to coop-players, and extreme challenge. Hell Revealed supports single player, cooperative (with additional weapons and enemies) and several maps have special DM parts (maps 1 and 2 are especially good for deathmatch). The new musics are currently taken from Rise of the Triad - we might release an updated version with original musics soon. That last bit from the HR.txt implies they were thinking of having a proper pack of midis for it all along, and that the midis that come with it are temporary stopgap decisions (the midis dont even cover every map). The earlier 11 map HR release from when they still had a story in mind also has entirely different midis. I'd love to have @Cammy head up a pack for it, as its a legendary influential wad that many see as a rite of passage, even aged as it is today. (And in doing so, we'll get a midipack usable in other megawads too! Knowing Cammy's past work, we'd also get a sneaky midi for HRE1's exclusive two maps too :p Edited September 14, 2022 by Devalaous 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nightmare2989 Posted September 14, 2022 It would be cool to have it own MIDI soundtrack i just have to stick to the rise of the traits one for my new playthrough for the YouTube series 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Billa Posted September 15, 2022 The RotT music is iconic and has come to be inseparably associated with HR in the Doom community, a midi pack would be so redundant. The only pack I'd want is more RotT tracks to cover the later levels which have stock Doom 2 music for whatever reason 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nightmare2989 Posted September 15, 2022 Yeah true the ROTT sound track it iconic but i do feel it need an update or something certain tracks don't fit certain levels and yes it would be nice to cover later levels as much as i love doom tracks i would prefer them gone 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Nightmare2989 Posted September 15, 2022 That is very true Doom and doom 2 have tons music packs even plutiona has one mine my bad spelling 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DSC Posted September 15, 2022 Because of the aforementioned reasons, I don't really believe HR1 needs a MIDI pack... The only way I could see this work would be if @leejacksonaudio were to make a few new tracks himself. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lucius Wooding Posted September 15, 2022 There's a good chunk of it that could use any kind of custom midis, including some of the most iconic maps. It's 25 years old, one of the most famous and influential wads of its era. If Master Levels got a full midi pack, surely the community could spare 9 new tracks; it was always intended to have full custom midis to begin with. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nightmare2989 Posted September 15, 2022 That true if the terrible master levels got one why could hell revealed and as you said it was intended to get full custom soundtrack that why i made this topic was to start discussion as i never seen a post about it and Hell revealed is a classic wad and need more love than what is given to it yeah, the gameplays outdated and the visuals are as well but still does not stop it from been a classic mega wad and one that gave inspiration to AV and hell and sunlust maybe hell even karma sutra could do with its own custom Midi tracks maybe but that a discussion for another time 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Kyka Posted September 15, 2022 I associate the RoTT soundtrack with RoTT oddly enough. And then Lee Jackson. And then Civvie11's channel. In terms of association with the Rott soundtrack, HR might make the top ten. Maybe. I would love to see another midi pack though. Any excuse for another midi pack, is where I'm at. HR2 also needs one, I think. :D 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
magicsofa Posted September 15, 2022 @Nightmare2989 suggestion: make the thread title "Hell Revealed needs MIDI pack" or something, so it's less cryptic 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

You're far too kind! If we're talking about megawads that could use original soundtracks, then Hell Revealed has indeed been on my list for a while now, though I admit seeing so many people make the argument that it's inseparable from RoTT's soundtrack has served to turn me away somewhat. Even so, this isn't even close to the first time that I've seen someone explicitly highlight Hell Revealed as a particularly MIDIpackable megawad, so it's quite clear that a lot of demand exists in the opposite direction, too. I need to improve what Steve Duff refers to as my "sleuthing skillz", because I'd love to ask Yonatan Donner and Haggay Niv how they feel about this not-so-raging debate, and furthermore what sort of original music they were envisioning for Hell Revealed back in the day. I have a few other music projects underway right now, but when they wrap up and get released, I might just turn my attention towards HR for my next big project. One thing's for sure, Lee Jackson is the very first man I'll invite if it ever does happen! 9 Quote Share this post Link to post

The only pack I'd want is more RotT tracks to cover the later levels which have stock Doom 2 music for whatever reason Well, you can make your own midi pack to cover the later levels as there were several great tracks from the Rise of the Triad OST that weren't used in HR's soundtrack, plus some of the best tracks were used within the first 10 maps, which is really just a preamble before HR starts out for real around Map11. SC-55 recordings of the ROTT soundtrack can be downloaded for free online. I personally go with: Map20 - "Task Force" (used in Map05) Map21 - "Smoke and Mirrors" (used in Map03) Map22 - "Work Day" Map23 - "Where Izit" (used in Map02) Map24 - "Mist Ache" (used in Map08) Map25 - "Shards" Map26 - "Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary" I think D_TENSE from Doom 2 does actually work really well for Map28 and Maps 27&29 feature repeats of earlier tracks which also work just fine. Doesn't matter which midi you choose for Map30, since you won't be able to hear a single note anyway over the chaotic, screeching noise that is this map's sole atmosphere. Devalaous Posted September 15, 2022 56 minutes ago, Cammy said: What an honor it is to be somebody's first pick for midi pack leadership - even over Jimmy? You're far too kind! Well, this might ruffle a feather or too, but this is all out of respect, and I acknowledge I am not the greatest at articulating my feelings: Jimmy has previously said a hard 'no' to a Hell Revealed pack, and is also busy with the Hexen expansion midipack, so it would feel strange and rude to me to ask him. Also, this is just my own thoughts, but I feel his previous midipacks, outside of Plutonia, all felt like they were meant to draw attention to underappreciated and forgotten megawads. I didn't know Rebirth existed, and while I knew Revolution existed, I didn't know TV1998 did, and the Revolution midipack being added to that release got me to try it. Meanwhile your previous packs, TNT and Alien Vendetta, both draw a resurgence to well-known packs and with absolute respect to the source material. AV similarly had resistance to a midipack in past threads, and TNT also further back. True enough, if I ever hear the Map01 music from either of AV's releases, I instantly think of AV and Sunset. You even have enough love for the projects you lead or join to give unique midis to cut maps or related works, like Valley of Echoes 2001 and Sewers, and I think thats really really cool. I feel like you'd be the best fit for a HR project, one that calms the divide between the two camps. One route that could be taken is to have two packs in a HR midipack, one that simply adds onto the existing one and fills those empty slots, likely with Lee Jackson midis that fit the feel of the others, and the second being a classic 35 midi pack that serves as a second (third if you count HRE1's soundtrack) alternative soundtrack done by a wide range of community musicians. Choice is never a bad thing to have :p Maybe this is convoluted, but ive always tried to satisfy multiple camps in my work across all games ive modded for. My Master Levels pack has three soundtracks, one with the ML midipack, one with stock music and on with MIDTWID music because I strongly believe in options and alternatives. I actually got a nasty message or two over not 100% featuring Peter's pack, but all that did was make my resolve stronger to provide more options for people's tastes. Music is one of the touchier subjects it seems, I recall making some people mad when I was assembling the TNT Revilution soundtrack out of our 35+ midis we had early on. I placed all the 35 midis in a rough order, with already claimed midis going in the designated map slot early, and the rest roughly appearing in a 'this one sounds like it would fit this episode' order, and I got quite a bit of pushback from mappers that felt I was squashing choice. Its hard to make everyone happy. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
PsychEyeball Posted September 15, 2022 I'm still in this minority of people who thinks the ROTT soundtrack fits HR like a glove to the point where you can't really split the two anymore. The fact the music WAD runs out a little over halfway through is indeed a little bit of a bummer, but I still feel like just making the thirds of a music pack for such an old WAD would be kind of a redundant exercice. Personally I'd dive in the Duke Nukem 3D MIDI repertoire to fill in the blanks in the OST. Same composers, yet slightly different vibes for the last episode of the pack, where the gauntlet really gets thrown down. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nightmare2989 Posted September 15, 2022 I just feel Hell Revealed need more love as it inspired so many Wads after it like alien vendetta and that got a midi pack so why can't the king get a midi pack hell even if it to celebrate it birthday or something we could always remaster the rise of the trait song or something I'm just throwing out ideas now 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Devalaous Posted September 15, 2022 https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/g-i/hrep1 Here's the older HR with the exclusive two maps and an entirely different soundtrack for its maps. Felt so strange going through this. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gregor Posted September 15, 2022 I asked the exact same thing earlier this year in a thread called "What are some wads that deserve a new MIDI pack". But since then i actually kinda changed my mind about the matter because you can really just easily fill those 8 empty music slots with unused songs from the ROTT OST and a few repeats from the more forgettable early maps and voila! Problem solved. At the same time, the more high quality midis to come out of the community the better, so i won't complain about an HR midi pack. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Roofi Posted September 15, 2022 (edited) Honestly, I think Doom 2's midis work well on many HR maps (map 24, 25, 28, 30...). A midi pack would be welcomed but it's not needed for my part. As a fan of Hell Revealed , I only replaced the stock midi of map 26 with the rendition of "Pull me Under" used in DR2008 map10. Faceman2000 Posted September 15, 2022 I just can't help but think of all the actually good wads out there that could also use a MIDI pack. . . :P 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

In my opinion, any megawad that doesnt have its own dedicated exclusive music is viable for one. My only concern here is that if Erik Alm were contacted for this, people would immediately hassle him about Scythe X. Edited September 15, 2022 by Devalaous 7 Quote Share this post Link to post

I apologize for bumping this thread, but your suggestion for “Pull Me Under” works so well for Afterlife that I wish it was the midi that came with the original wad. As for me, I’d basically stick with Gregory’s midi lineup but with one addition from MidTWID. So in essence: Map20 - "Task Force" Map21 - "Smoke and Mirrors" Map22 - "Work Day" Map23 - "Ring Of Gravity" (unused MIDI from Mid the way Id Did) by Gustavo6046 Map24 - "Mist Ache" Map25 - "Shards" Map26 - "Pull Me Under" (MIDI arrangement originally by Dream Theater) Map28 - "Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary" Map30 - "Hellero” 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
