Sneezy McGlassFace Posted October 23, 2022 I find ESDF a bit more useful for movement, and then everything else close by. I'm used to very similar layout from my Quake 3 days. Also, UDB has default movement on ESDF as well so it's not that crazy. F key has indentation on all keyboards I know so it's easy to find the place too. Most common up top, less common next to them, most powerful on sides, melee down. C - Fist Q - Pistol R - Shotguns T - Chaingun W - Rockets G - Plasma A - BFG 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
CFWMagic Posted October 23, 2022 My hotkeys come from my experience with both Quake 3 and Doom 3, and replicate the same keys I used there. I don't quickswitch much in classic since I'm not yet skilled enough to squeeze full optimal use out of every weapon and every round of ammo, but it does come in useful when playing my own custom version of Brutal Doom. Keys are as follows: V - Handgun C - Chaingun Z - Shotgun/SSG Q - Plasmagun 1 - Rocket Launcher 2 - BFG T - Fist/Chainsaw Brutal Doom exclusives: 3 - Utility (flamethrower, grenades, c4) 4 - Monster (Mancubus Cannon, Revenant Cannon) 5 - Special (Original BD pistol and rifle (I have my own custom ones replacing those, making them redundant) The logic I go with is to have every "tier" of weapon on it's own row. Bottom row (Z, C, V) is conventional, bullets and shells, from right to left, from least powerful to most powerful. Q is unique because the plasmarifle tends to be a niche weapon for me due to fat projectiles and no hitscan. And then the top row is power weapons, from left to right from least powerful/cheapest to most powerful/most expensive. Originally I got this set-up from Quake 3 defrag, because I needed very quick access to the Plasmagun, Rocket Launcher, Railgun and Grenade launcher so I can multitask when running through maps. Which ended up with me using the plasmagun on C, railgun on Q, rockets on 1 and grenades on 2. I can then use those four main keys to rapidly switch between weapons as needed if I need a specific combination trick (e.g. it's much easier to do 2, shoot, 1, shoot, hug wall, shoot, C, plasmaclimb). Everything is right at my left hand, paired with movement keys, leaving my right hand completely free to do my angles while strafing/plasma-climbing. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Superjustinbros Posted October 24, 2022 When the weapon switching is fast or when there's a lot of weapons you can shift between, I use the mouse wheel, otherwise it's the same 1 through 7 keys (though I cannot name many instances where I would press 2). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheMagicMushroomMan Posted October 24, 2022 I use a controller, so I use the d-pad. I change it a lot. Here's what I have now: UP - BFG DOWN - SSG LEFT - CHAINGUN RIGHT - COMBAT SHOTGUN Sometimes I'll replace one of them with the fist/chainsaw, depending on the wad. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
heliumlamb Posted October 24, 2022 1 - fist/motorblades 2 - pistol 3 - shotgun(s) q - rocket e - plasma r - large goshdang firearm (electroarm?) f - chaingun i & p - previous and next weapons, as they are above my turning keys, helpful when im going keyboard only. i like to unbind mwheel if i can, as i mostly use it to accidentally change weapons now when hitting mouse3 for use. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

If I tried to change the default weapon number binds, my game would degenerate into farce. Trying to override nearly 3 decades of muscle memory would get old really quick. Hell, I will often rebind keys in other games to match Doom as closely as possible. heh. this. also been playing since the beginning. my template for doom (and quake, taken straight from doom) is my template for every shooter. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Can't really see how that's too convenient, if you want to actively move/dodge while switching weapons, more so if you want to switch multiple times in a short period of time. : S 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
