  • Is the Doom IWAD in the same dir?
  • Which version of LZ are you running?
  • What are your PC specs?

1.) Yes

2.) Latest (3.88b) (Not a dev build)

3.) Intel Core Duo CPU T2500 2.00GHZ, 2GB RAM, and an AMD Mobility Radeon X1400

That explains GZDoom at least. That GPU is way too ancient. It needs to support OpenGL 3.3 or Vulkan; as a 16 year-old(!) GPU, it doesn't even support DX10. It was made for DX9.0c.

As for LZDoom, that needs OpenGL 2.1. According to the specs, though, your GPU DOES support that.

Also, you need a 32-bit build of LZDoom. 64-bit won't work for obvious reasons.

https://github.com/drfrag666/gzdoom/releases/

You'll want the x86 one.

The X1400 is an R500 architecture chip.

This supports OpenGL 2.0. Its the successor to the Radeon 97xx/98xx which debuted OpenGL 2.0.

R500 does support DX9.0c and Shader Model 3.0 though.

Honestly i would look at ZDoom32. That one has a OpenGL 2.0 based renderer taken from an older GZDoom build (1.9.1).

Should run pretty nicely on there, and as its based on latest ZDoom 2.8.1.

Alternatively, there is ZZDoom, which has ZScript support (And thus can run but removes the OpenGL renderer. Pure software.

Some sites seem to report 2.0, others 2.1.

If it's 2.0, then yeah, it's too old even for LZDoom, and it's off to ZDoom32/ZZDoom, as you said.

Update the drivers. I refuse to believe ZDoom32 cant run there since it runs on worse. What error does it throw up?

What drivers do yall think is causing the error?

I told you one possible cause - video card drivers.

Word of advice - we can't look inside your PC or your brain, so if we have to do assumptions (Which we do) any bit of info (Like which driver, which error, which OS, etc..) helps making a better assumption/advice.

It also helps patching up Windows and downloading the latest .net frameworks.

I already updated one of the drivers i thought was the cause but it didn't fix it though

It would help if you said which one you updated.

Have you considered using another sourceport? ZDoom has a lot of forks

Alternatively, you can use a non-ZDoom sourceport like Doom Retro or MBF21 supported ports, yes you will not get the fancy features from GZ/LZDoom but for playing doom maps is more than enough.

Alright so i have a theory i wanna try out

If any of you guys could send me your .ini files for either LZDoom or GZDoom then please do I really just wanna play doom again lmao

Maybe the problem is rooted in the fact that the game can't make an .ini due to the crashes.

The ZDoom fork that only worked was zdoom LE

The rest? Nope.

LE heavily depends on which version. In the OpenGL version, it has OpenGL 1.2. See the wiki as to why this is the case.

Again, update your video drivers. We can't suggest anything until atleast this variable has been met. Your GPU should technically be able to use ZDoom32, so anything that prohibits that:

  • First update Video drivers
  • Then Windows updates

Maybe the directory LZDoom/GZDoom is in is read-only?

@Kappes Buur maybe you can chime in?

Okay guys I solved the problem!

All i did was install the security update for Windows 7 and re-installed lzdoom though it gave me a new error but I solved it by replacing the exe with the same one from the archive LZDoom came in and bam it works!

So basically what was suggested did the trick.

Enjoy your Dooming.
