Suitepee Posted September 17, 2022 (edited) Well my 37th birthday is coming up on the 3rd October, so I was wondering if anyone from this wonderful Doomworld community would be interested in making any maps for me......with an interesting twist. The pictures in this thread have been drawn by one of the SEN kids I work for (I work as a teaching assistant for a SEN school if anyone is curious), who likes to create this particular pattern over and over again from time to time and hand it out to various people in the school. And one day the thought struck me that this pattern would be interesting to see in a Doom map, of course! I have no particular preference for what type of map is created (vanilla, boom, UDMF, custom textures, slaughter or non-slaughter.....do whatever you want, as long as it's playable!), so long as the child's pattern is somehow incorporated into the map itself in some way. EDIT 20/09/22: Today at work I asked the child who had done the drawings as to what the patterns were meant to be, and he told me that they were 'flowers'. Feel free to use this for any mapping inspiration, although the maps don't have to be flowery-themed. I'm not expecting much, but I'm genuinely curious to see who gives this birthday challenge a go. Deadline would be the 3rd October. Have fun if you choose to take part, and I would of course livestream any and all results on my Twitch channel either on the day itself or shortly thereafter. Thelokk Posted September 17, 2022 (edited) Intrigued, count me in. Also respect, you're doing the good work. Edited September 17, 2022 by Thelokk 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted September 17, 2022 I...might actually do something here. Although I don't know how to recolor textures and I won't guarantee I'll look it up somewhere. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Color remap, colorize and tint are your options. Color remap is the most useful imo since you can swap individual color ranges. Very easy to use. Just remember to add the edited textures to you're patch table if you're making copies and not just replacing the old ones. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

You can change the color of the lights (that was what i thinked).... :-) !! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Thelokk Posted September 17, 2022 Very tricky pattern to play with, but even in the barest of its WIP form it can give rise to some very interesting light games. Also remember that vanilla textures have a wider range of colors than it might seem at first, if we think of them as colors instead of textures :) 11 Quote Share this post Link to post

Drawing circles won't take long at all in GZDoom Builder but I do have some other things that could take up some time. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Suitepee Posted September 20, 2022 Just bumping the thread slightly (great responses to this so far by the way!) to point out that today at work I asked the child who had done the drawings as to what the patterns were meant to be, and he told me that they were 'flowers'. Whether this helps in any way for any maps that are created for this birthday request, I cannot say. You don't have to make the maps flowery-themed or anything, but just thought I'd tack this extra information on in case it inspires anything. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post

No flowers in mine I'm afraid though, if we want to carry on with the gardening metaphor, there will be plenty of mowing down to do. I'm a terrible human being. Sorry. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
HorseJockey Posted September 20, 2022 (edited) Happy birthday and keep up the good work! I've been looking for inspiration to create a map, I will see what I can get done before the 3rd. Edit: Here is a peak at what I have so far, 3 ovals/circles left. If nothing else it is visually fun to look at, not sure how it will play, but look forward to finishing it up and posting it for you to enjoy. Edited September 26, 2022 by HorseJockey Adding a picture of the map I am working on. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
obake Posted September 27, 2022 Got mine done! It is UDMF format, with resources included in the wad file. I would have added more of the winding design of the drawing if I had time. That said, the map still does have some of the almost-lollipop shapes of the drawing, as well as some flowers. I can't wait to see you play it! I want to see you play it live, if possible. I'll do my best to be on stream quickly. Sbday wad Happy birthday, John! 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Suitepee Posted October 1, 2022 Thanks for the first submission @obake. Just a quick bump to remind that the deadline for any map entries will be coming up on Monday (3rd October), and that at some point in the next few days afterwards I will stream all the maps on my Twitch channel. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Might give one or two others an extra bit of time also. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
noob_killer012345678 Posted October 4, 2022 It isn't a must, but thank you I will get on it right away 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Suitepee Posted October 6, 2022 https://youtu.be/YTcOTWvKkTQ Thanks to @HorseJockey, @noob_killer012345678, @obake, @ShakarAtar and @ProverbialGamer for their map submissions! The FOUR maps were fun to play in different ways, and I was particularly impressed by Horse Jockey's map submission. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
HorseJockey Posted October 6, 2022 @Suitepee Thanks, I'm really glad you liked it. Sorry I joined late and missed my map, but I watched the VOD afterwards. I didn't have time to playtest the combat, and it showed lol. This was my first map that I have ever released publicly and I appreciate all the kind words from everyone. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
