What about Sonic's Schoolhouse?

Yeah what about it Sonikku? How is a 1996 teaching game comparable to the mentioned list?

I recognize the joke if it is one.

I.M. Meen

Just saying.

E: I mean it's not 100 % straight to compare SSH to I. M. Meen since Meen actually has combat, but you know they're both educational games and honestly kinda obscure 90's PC games so I guess someone might want to check it out.

E2: And to be fair I. M. Meen and Chill Manor are kinda memeworthy games so I just wanted to point out another memeworthy game:b

What about Isle of the Dead :D

If nothing else, the game had a really badass box:

13666-isle-of-the-dead-dos-front-cover.j

That was a raised image on the box, so you could actually feel along the flesh clinging to the skull, and feel the eyeballs and the teeth. And thinking back on it, they probably spent more making the box than they did actually making the game. The death scenes were still neat. And I still don't know how I convinced my Mom to buy it for me. I guess I had already been playing Doom at that point, so what more harm could it do?

Edit: After looking at it again, I realized that that box art did more to influence the way I draw teeth/gums on zombies or other monsters, demons, what have you, than anything else I've ever seen. It's actually eerily similar; I guess I've been doing it subconsciously for almost three decades. So Isle of the Dead wasn't a complete waste.

Those are still first person games that are more akin to Doom Clones. Your example's only reference to those games is that it is a teaching game.

Can't deny, though as I mentioned in my post edit I thought about similarities regarding the educational aspect and the infamous character of these games, where they've become more memeworthy. I guess I also wanted to post an obscure "relic" to someone who's into obscure 90's PC shit like I am.

Quiver

Not bad conceptually.

Chasm: The Rift

This is a impressive beast, technically. A fancy quake clone based upon a Wolfenstein 3D style engine? Crazy witchcraft!

Rise of the Triad

A really great and very fun game, greatest BGM for a videogame, lots of bangers.

Strife

Another awesome game, a great mix of RPG, FPS, adventure and "stealth" mission with a very interesting story behind it.

In Pursuit of Greed

Just downloaded it long ago but never played properly... Is it any Good?

Cyclones technically is good and ahead of it's time, but the game mechanics are too complicated to understand.

I.M. Meen also straight-up clones ShadowCaster's interface for... some reason (IIRC people investigated and concluded it wasn't based on the same engine despite the similarities)

In Pursuit of Greed is much better with xGreed source port

Well i asked at community releases - maybe here someone can reverse enginer two files? to make English translation possible?

There is two other games based on same T3D engine, as Mars 3D based on.

Even file formats the same, i want to translate these two games "Tao" and "3D Hero" to English too.

I need tools that used for editing "CHIN16.FNT" and "STATE.DAT".

If English translation happen, the jval a developer of mars3d source port for windows, most likely make port of these two game too. As promised to try =)

the official web pages

https://web.archive.org/web/19…0513/http://www.vr3d.com/

http://www.vr3d.net/

CHIN16.FNT - can be opened by Tile Molester as 1bpp linear , 2-Dimensional.

I'm not sure anyone "loves those games."..although Shadowcaster was actually of better quality than almost all those games you mentioned.

They are innovative for a lot of reasons:

  • Rex Blade has its own custom programming language, so you can create a game like Asteroids in-game
  • Mortal Coil has NPC based squads like Rainbow Six.
  • Alpha Storm has planetary travel and internal ship fights, much like Mass Effects or Star Citizen
  • Terminator Future Shock was fully polygonal in 1995 and open world-like

DOS and early Windows shooters were awesome for doing wholly unique stuff back then.

Shadowcaster had such potential for an open world RPG engine, but alas.

Fun fact: the artist for Isle of the Dead, Myk Friedman, also made Ultimate Simpsons Doom. He then had a career as an animator on Youtube, under the channel name Toonsmyth Productions.

Not-fun fact, he died from diabetes in 2014.

Surprised that nobody talked about Last Rites yet...

If i was given a minute, i could spare you a whole lot of surprises that are missing from this thread.

XS: Shield Up, Fight Back for example. Unreal Tourney/Quake 3 before it was cool.

Somehow I ended up with three copies of XS in my collection. I have the U.K, U.S and German versions.

Don't forget that Operation bodycount had NPCs you could order around before Mortal coil.

i like special video effect's in these games like optical distortion, also shadowcaster not mentioned but have optical distortion too.

And palette shifting, games Corridor 7 and Quiver. More about palette shifting (palette cycling)

would be cool if that effects will be ported to some doom source port(s) =)

I find out that there is

Hovertank 3D

and

Corridor 7

is also attractive games, ah if they have source port would be epic.

also found german old freeware dos game Desperabis also very cool looking game , and it heavy on system resources as Chasm and Pyl.

It's my first time hearing about Dust/Pył, and to put it simply, my mind was blown.

That degree of full 3D environment shouldn't have been possible on DOS, wow! Why people don't talk a lot about it in comparison to Chasm is beyond me, but I'm not one to judge.

Desperabis, on the other side, is quite a curiosity as well. A 2000 game for DOS that looks like an early-mid-90's shovelware... now if that doesn't make you curious, I don't know what does. :P

Dust/Pył - most heavy dos game from Poland and only in Polish language its considered for Poland only and never released/advertised/sells in other countries , that makes this game unknown/and obscured by time as no one noticed, the English patch is on vogons, it uses 3dfx voodoo glide heavily under dos with lens flare/ optical distortion/ detailed textures/ particles - this is like Unreal, sadly this not know.

And game play  is enjoyable (if you have native dos powerful machine!, or uses qemu 3dfx passtrough approach)

Original developer wanted to port it to windows (in our modern times) but abandoned, sad, that was really a good game that should make return. And had second chance with several language adaptations and easy to use.

I also find out "DOSBOX Staging" it gives us fast performance, so games like Desperabis and Chasm works almost on full speed, if only DOSBOX Staging with glide support we have somewhere? it would be epic that allows Pyl to be played with much more FPS.

This Staging version also fixes Corridor 7 palette cycling animations , making palette cycling works on constant speed.

I find dosbox staging because there is chasm portable edition on moddb and it includes this staging version with right settings in conf file, it even can be a little bit faster if you set cycles to "max 105%" in conf file.

the right settings are:

core=dynamic
cputype=auto
cycles=max 105%
cycleup=10
cycledown=20
