Zetrostorm Posted October 8, 2022 I just bought DOOM 2 off on Steam and I was wondering how you could actually play PWADS I searched on how to play WADS but all I could find was Mods and the tutorials that it showed, were very much outdated. So, how do you actually play PWADS? (ps, i am planning to play Overboard and do apologize if this is a question that's been asked a million times) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
NiGHTS108 Posted October 8, 2022 1. Download a source port (Like GZDoom) 2. Download your pwad 3. Drag and drop the .wad file onto gzdoom.exe and get going! 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Of course if you're the more vanilla inclined type then you'd use something like DSDA-Doom. Make sure to get DSDA-Launcher if you get DSDA. DSDA-Doom still supports a wide variety of mods, but some mods won't work as they use ZDoom, GZDoom or Eternity Engine only features. Forgot to mention, but ZDL can be used with more ports than just ZDoom based ones, and it's far superior than having to do stuff via command line. RHhe82 Posted October 8, 2022 As we're speaking launchers, I've been using DoomLauncher (https://github.com/nstlaurent/DoomLauncher/releases/tag/3.6.2) which lets me alter between source ports I have downloaded (I mostly use DSDA-Doom, which'll run Overboard just great, but I also have GZDoom, Crispy and Eternity Engine for the occasion pwads requires them or I want a brief change of scenery) and it's been great. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Nimlouth Posted October 9, 2022 16 hours ago, overlordParanoia said: What mod launchers are out there? Doom Runner is kind of the best launcher out there imho. It works for ZDoom based ports, aswell as with Chocolate/Crispy ports and PrBoom+. I've been using it for GZDoom and Doom Retro to play all sorts of mods and wads for a long while now.https://github.com/Youda008/DoomRunner 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
knifeworld Posted October 9, 2022 I've been using Doom Explorer for quite some time now, I find that it's easier and has more options than ZDL which I used for ages. Doom Explorer creates shortcuts for you so you only need DE itself once per pwad to do that. Basically you choose an iwad just once whenever you need to use a different one, and then whatever pwads you want. You can easily switch the order, for example: if you need to load a mod or resource before a map pack. You can quickly switch what port will be used, in the top line, too. http://doomutils.ucoz.com/load/ 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
smeghammer Posted October 9, 2022 It's probably worth noting that as Doom is originally a DOS game, PWAD launching was (and still can be) done from a terminal window. I use GZDoom, which has many extra cli switches to the original game (other source ports have their own as well) and the complete list can be found here: https://zdoom.org/wiki/Command_line_parameters There are a lot but for your question look for the -file option. This lets you load pwads... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
SFFlowerBoy Posted October 10, 2022 The port that comes with the steam version comes also with an addon feature. There you can download some selected vanilla wads. I personally can recommend doom zero and anomaly report, if you looking for something on the level of the original Doom games 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
