Stardate 20x6 + 20x7 demos [-complevel 9]

Recommended Posts

20x7 Map 9 max. Not going for speed, but 28:42 :)

maxes of all the maps (except Map1) are included in the zip and a hilarious outtake from map5.

Map1 = Easy

Map2 = Easy except the chessboard fight, which killed me 10-15 times

Map3 = Easy, but I have bad strats :p. I made the start harder than it should be lol

Map4 = I did not know about the friction until I lost a demo there so the salt is real.

Map5 = Boring as hell to grind, but once I get past the Cyber and Barons where I get the rocket launcher its pretty fun. The ending takes practice and I have a cool counting strat ;) It is still extremely dangerous; thanks a lot Zzul

Map6 = Annoying bc every fight can kill you unless you just pacifist the start. Revenant staircase took a lot of practice

Map7 = Rough start, and I had to cheese one of the fights with an avj which I am not exactly happy about, but in casual play the fight is pretty cool. Stairs can be deadly without good strats, and the ending is not bad.

Map8 = really fun! Every fight is an absolute banger

Map9 = First half is easy enough, but revenant staircase 2.0 took a lot of practice, so did the ending. I explain the ending puzzle in the txt file, and I wanted to mark the occasion by submitting this demo!

Map31 = Easy I got it first try after practicing the hopscotch. That is the only slightly hard part of the map.

Map32 = A joy to play! Fun little map and that crusher fight is hilarious.

I loved all the midis, and thank you ribbiks!

Stardate 20x7 maps 6-9 movie in 1:17:07 for d2all practice.

This is a practice run that went all the way. Since I have to pistol start map 6 and map 5 is a nightmare not to mention the map 4 dice roll, I like to drill 6-9 regularly. The penultimate fight in map 9 was pretty rough, so I want to drill that more. 8 will always be scary, and never underestimate 6 despite the excessive cheese :)

Not sure if you're aware of this, but you did save once in map06.

Still a great run of course :D

Stardate 20x7 Maps 1-8 UV-MAX in 2:10:13

Its bittersweet :') I was sad to see this d2all die in map 9, but it was my first time getting past map 5. Map 5 has been atrocious since February especially bc of the ending fight, but today was the first time I got past it. To win a 1-5 Max means a lot to me, and reaching map 9 gives me a lot of hope. Thanks to everyone who was watching the stream, and I hope next time I will be posting the winning run!

There's a few tricks/safe strats I know of for this wad that you didn't use in this video. Maybe you're aware of them and decided not to use them? If so, forgive the following rambling explanations

- on map01 you can go to the other side of the main purple pit right away without raising the platforms if you just run on the wall that's to your right when facing it

- on map05 you can cheese the PE bit of the caco square fight by standing in the doorway (I think you definitely knew this one and decided not to bother because you had more ammo than in a 05 max anyway?)

- you can cheese the 05 final fight quite a lot by just opening the exit as soon as you're able and going into the exit room. iirc basically nothing can threaten you here and you can just rocket the remaining monsters or let them bunch up and infight

- in the big purple pool fight in 06, you can skip the line that starts the fight fairly easily just by sr40ing down the steps (seems like I'm the only one who knows this one)

- in the big L shape fight on 07, you can cheese it a lot by killing the imps near one of the entrances to the raised bit, so that the viles can mostly only get to the other entrance (genius idea, stolen from Touchdown's stardate 07 video, here: https://youtu.be/H6FOH1UcjcU?t=1341)

- on the final fight on 07, you can cheese the second phase by stepping onto the switch as it's lowering and getting behind the cybers, which seems to be way more consistent/survivable than playing the pillars area as intended (also stolen from Touchdown, see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6FOH1UcjcU&t=2339s)

I'm definitely not aware of all of these, I didn't spend as much time thoroughly examining 20x6 as I did with Sunlust. Definitely some stuff to think about when I inevitably decide I want to redo it.

Safe strats definitely were not much of a priority generally because of the time loss, though there was probably some merit to finding a lineskip for the 06 purple pool fight, it'd mean I could have two fights worth of infighting happening at the same time which probably would be faster.

For the 07 L shape fight, definitely far too slow to pull everything out like that.

For the 07 finale, it was mostly a personal decision to not do the cheese. I don't think it's all that much safer, and it's also a lot less exciting to do. I've been influenced by both Zzul and Nevanos going for more exciting strats during their difficult runs, and it ends up being both more enjoyable for me to play and people to watch.

You did seem to be using some safe (or safer?) strats elsewhere iirc. idk. I thought I heard a while back the main obstacle to 20x6 d2all was the two parts in 07 that are arguably luck based, because people didn't want to invest so much time in getting to that point only to lose it.

Do you play any arcade shmups, btw? That's a genre to get into if you like playing something hard for 30+ minutes only to die to the exponentially harder final boss.

Heh, definitely didn't have a 100% consistent goal with every strat, but more than anything I wanted 07 to be exciting.

Not too much shmup experience; Ikaruga (obviously), ChoRenSha, Jamestown, and Diadra Empty are the only ones I can think of that I've invested any serious time into. Though in the end I love them more for their music than anything else, I need to find more good shmup music.

Got any recommendations on what to play/grab the soundtracks from?

My personal recommendations to play (trying to keep it relatively brief): Dodonpachi Dai-ou-jou, Battle Garegga, Armed Police Batrider, Ketsui, Raiden DX

Bunch of music which doomworld's post editor thing did not like:

Spoiler

Daerik, go for the Parodius Da! 2-ALL. I believe in you.

20x7 Episode 1 (Map01 - Map05) UV-MAX in 1:07:21. Out of 9 map05 exits, this one is at least 5 minutes faster than all the others. If this wad does get the episode distinctions, I can see episode 2 being more competitive because of how much fun it is. Maybe someone could do episode 2 but not cheese map06?
