You can show the doom team in 1993 one wad, which one?

Instead of wasting time showing them wads I would talk them into implementing MAPINFO, making the Linedefs more like Heretic where you can manually determine if it’s a switch, walkover, shootable, etc, and de-hardcoding the monsters and instead including their behavior in the wad so that DeHacKed never became a thing.

One level of one wad:

map10 of equinox.wad

It's got to be the ONLY level on Doom that's ever scared the living bejezus out of me.

I'd show them Doom Eternal and claim that the fan community made it using the source code for Doom.

Nah, for real, maybe the first Aliens TC just to be all "hey, remember when you were going to make a licensed game? Don't worry, a fan does it very soon after you put out the game."

I'm curious what would've happened if someone showed them Plutonia - what wads would have been made in place of tnt and plutonia if they made plutonia first?

Now there's an idea for a to-be-made WADset.

Plutonia the way Id would do.

Could I just show them this thread and say “in 30 years this game is still going to be wildly popular…”

For wads probably No End in Sight, arguably the best Doom 1 wad ever made.

As has been mentioned, I’m pretty sure Carmack would be more interested in Doom Eternal.

Eviternity would be a good choice too, or even something like Akeldama.

Knowing Carmack, he probably wouldn't be too impressed with anything that utilized enhancements to the engine. In fact, he'd probably wonder why the source ports aren't the equivalent of idtech5 by now (he would probably know how to add a few lines of code and idtech1 would immediately leapfrog idtech3).

Interesting. What do you think he'd say about Dehacked?

John Carmack actually answered that in 1999, which you can find on Slashdot:

Quote

Dhacked was a bit of a surprise to me, and I always looked at it as something that maybe shouldn't have been done. I'm not very fond of binary editing an executable. It clearly showed that people were interested in more control, so it probably argued for the greater freedom given with quake.

the sky may be

"hello brain on legs carmack, i regret to inform you that your engine isn't blessed. have a look at this? the sky, maybe."
i would hand them a floppy, and they would possibly stare in confusion. i would then walk to the other side of the office floor, away from the elevators and stairs, then disappear.

and they would all start cursing the great god imp and i over the daily domino's pepperoni pizza.

FYI Sigil is limit-removing.

With that in mind, I'd pick something truly vanilla, as that's the best equivalent to what the id guys were actually working on back in 1993.

To that end, I'd pick something like BTSX Episode 2, as it's a good example of how far the community has pushed the engine without any source code changes.

Is it that easy to make a game engine go from 2(.5)D to completely 3D

Rowdy rudy 2 and Jamal jones. Rowdy rudy because it’s very good and Jamal jones because it’s also very good (AND I MADE A MAP FOR IT AND MUST INDULGE IN MY NARCISSISM)

I'd show them Duke Nukem 3d and watch them give up

But if Doom didn't exist, DN3D wouldn't exist. Gee you broke the timeline! Now we have to fix this shit!

would btsx even run on the computers of the time? maybe it's because i was running it in prboom, but it was kinda choppy even on my 400mhz pii

Show them Doom the Way id Did. Maybe this actually happened and what we know as Doom is actually Doom the Way "Doom the Way id Did" Did.

Cyberdreams. Otherwise maybe Dystopia 3, which contains all the neat 'tricks' of vanilla era engine, put to some snazzy practical use.

If limit removing ports are allowed, I'm torn between something more 'conventional' high quality (Valiant, Ancient Aliens, etc.), or else just the highest calorie, over the top slaughter wad of the times (Sunder, Sunlust, etc.).

That if their hardware could handle Eviternity. And not BSOD' with this outcome immediately taking place after.

Yeah but can it run crysis?
