Tips for a Doom Stream beginner

Hey guys,

Does what it says on the title. The last week or so I've not been as proactive in continuing on my map building as I've been on holiday and I am moving flats next week. Super excited, but also to finally develop a space as I want it. And that leads me onto one of my latter points!

H/t to a fellow Doomworld user who suggested it - I have been thinking of streaming some of my Doom playthroughs. I was recently playing Scythe pre-holiday, and I thought, I'd really love to share my first time playing these WADs which have been recommended to me. As I played through the first few levels I jotted down some thoughts (what scared me here, do I need more ammo here, what do I think of map design? etc etc), and I really wanted to share them beyond a review/post...

The community thus far has been great fun and insightful, particularly for a user like me who has love and nostalgia for the DOOM series, but not the experience in either WADs or mapping yet to truly be considered 'seasoned'. Hence, it's all a learning experience for me and one I'd like to build on. I think streaming provides a really interactive base for getting to know others in the community more, too. I think I would show my face + use mic as well!

So once I'm all settled into my new place (and I have ordered new tech etc too!) I think I'll begin with a casual stream or something to see how it goes.

It would be great to hear what you guys look for as both viewers or streamers - likes, dislikes, pitfalls to avoid etc...  Let me know :)

Thanks
Rosie

I don't really stream but i do make videos on doom stuff (i had to stop since my ram is full and i need more space). Nothing fancy.

As far as a viewer: Honestly just be yourself. You don't need to be some one else to entertain people or have people liking your stuff. Being yourself is more then enough to get to know a content creator.

As a streamer goes, depends on what platform you stream on. If it's youtube ask doomkid or sandwedge about it, if it's twitch...well that one you need to ask around because again i don't stream.

One last thing i will say is this, if you want to do like reviews of wads you've played or talk about them, go watch Mt. Pain27's series on youtube called Dean of doom. He makes great content and a great binge watch if your mapping as well.

Hope this helps, if it don't...well at least i tried :)

It has helped - you can never have TOO many perspectives, only too few...

I am undecided as to go with Twitch or YT actually. I think some run a combo of both?!

Thanks for recommendation of Mt.Pain27 - I'll give his stuff a go!

play terry wads and talk about how bland they look.

heh

Spoiler

Seriously, if you wan't to start into streaming, well, you should search how to handle a stream (the prestream screen, and some cool things like in-stream chat (what is actually a mirror of the actual stream chat heh), as for sourceport, well, you can use whatever you want but the one use by most Doom Streamers for map playing is DSDA-Doom (iirc it has options for streaming so it's a plus). And the most important thing: Preparation, obviously nobody expects that a new streamer make a ultra polished and profesional streamer like big ones, but keep in mind that you are making a LIVE streaming, so some preparation and making sure that theres any distraction or "happy error" during the stream can help a lot.

The rest depends of you and your charisma and ability as entertainer.

IDK why I'm talking about steaming since i'm not a streamer nor watches streams besides vtubers and some youtube streams lool

For me, YouTube is way better than Twitch, now that they chill out about copyright and after some dick moves made by Twitch. Also, YouTube has improved his streaming to bite some of the Twitch cake and it has a better video reproduction for slow connections. So if I stream Doom (a game that probably you'll never get a copyright claim), will choose youtube IMO.

Thanks - highlighted some things here I need to read into/practice, esp DSDA-Doom.

yeah; some of my faves like BigMacDavis I obviously watch on YT and it seems fine; more people have YT accounts as well I think(?) over Twitch, so probably makes interaction more far-reaching.

Again I’ll echo this…..Be yourself and genuine. Nothing worse than too much playing  up to the camera etc..

Most importantly just enjoy what you are doing because THAT will always shine through.

Looking forward to seeing what you do.

Start with something you feel comfortable in, talking and playing is very difficult if you have to take all your attention to a stressful/unknown situation.
