DOOM RPG mods?

Are there any coop fantasy / rpg mods out there for Doom?

 

I saw something about “Doom RPG SE” on Youtube which looked interesting but there was no info on how to actually play it.

 

I just bought Steam’s “Doom 1993”. Can that run mods or no?

First of all: welcome to Doomworld!

 

I'll answer your questions from bottom to top because that seems to make most sense to me in this case.

 

1. Yes, Doom 1993 (also known as just Doom or Doom 1 or - when it comes with the fourth episode - Ultimate Doom) can run mods but not that easily by itself. You should get a source-port, that'll make your life easier. There is a wide variety of them. Check out these two videos:

But honestly, most of the mods out there are made for Doom 2. So you probably should also buy this one.

 

2. The RPG you're talking about probably isn't a mod but the old Doom RPG, an old mobile game that recently got (unofficially) ported to PC. I don't know much about it, maybe someone-else can help you out.

 

3. And yeah, there are fantasy / RPG mods out there. It depends on what you are looking for. The are some weapon mods out there that have RPG-like leveling systems but do not come with any maps. And then there are big total conversion mods like the excellent Abysm 2: Infernal Contract by @jazzmaster9

There is a channel in the Obsidian Discord (https://discord.gg/dfqCt9v) specific to GZDRPG that has some knowledgeable people (not shilling our Discord, but I usually just use GZDoom for testing maps so I don't know much about it).

 

If you're curious about another RPG-esque mod, I have an archived repo with several versions of a mod called Doom RPG Lite (hosted with permission from the original creators). I also tweaked it to work better with the Doom Roguelike Arsenal mod (https://github.com/dashodanger/Doom-RPG-lite).

The mod is linked in the video description. You'll need GZDoom for it. I think it's a variant of Kyle873's Doom RPG, which has been around for a while and has a bunch of forks.
