TheCarsEdge Posted October 20, 2022 (edited) it isn't as bad as the n64 controller, but it's hard to sprint when using one (basically all chances of avoiding enemy attacks quickly are gone) Edited October 20, 2022 by TheCarsEdge 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Captain POLAND Posted October 20, 2022 It's more because of my OCD than any intentional challenge, but I absolutely hate the sound the imps, hell knights, and barons make when they hit you in melee (although for some reason it doesn't bother me when they are infighting). So I tend to prioritize them above more dangerous enemies, and go out of my way to stay out of melee range from them, even if it means doing something more dangerous. Sometimes I also don't switch weapons until the ammo for the current weapon I'm using is exhausted, so I'll end up using rockets in close quarters or trying to chaingun a cyberdemon or something. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Faceman2000 Posted October 20, 2022 I never play with a real mouse - I’m either using the nipple-mouse or playing keyboard only. I also don’t use always run. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

The N64 analog stick has a better range than the joy cons, plus it has a lot more buttons to bind too than a single-joycon. But perhaps you can use the motion features of a joy-con? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Maximum Matt Posted October 22, 2022 I only recently started playing with mouse. Straight up, the last like 25 years was keyboard only. Yeah I'm a bit weird like that 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Wyrmwood Posted October 23, 2022 (edited) Playing the PSX version had built in handicaps, no saves and tank controls that could only use the d-pad because dual analog stick controllers came out after. Suppose at least the archvilles were on vacation and a old school psx controller has still got to be better than mouse only, probably similar to keyboard only. I like pistol starting which I know some would see as an intentional handicap but I don't do it for that reason, I just enjoy the gameplay of conserving ammo and hunting down the weapons each map. Edit: does smoking a shit load of weed before playing count? Edited October 23, 2022 by Wyrmwood 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

CFWMagic Posted October 23, 2022 (edited) A few weird ones which I don't feel like are much of a handicap, but might look like it to someone else (one of them is even mentioned by OP): - I never have always run on. Ever. The vast majority of the time, I'm walking everywhere. Gives me more time to think things through. It also feels like a buff rather than a handicap because it makes dodging actually somewhat easier for me, as I have less risk of dodging into projectiles. In fact, I got so used to this that dodging revenants by tapping run while making C-like motions to dodge missiles is my bread and butter when fighting that enemy. - If it can be helped at all, I do not use the super-shotgun at all and stick to Ultimate Doom arsenal only. This forces me to use bigger guns more often and more tactically, all the while extending the lifetime of fodder and medium monsters because I'm essentially killing them twice as slow as intended. - In Doom 64, never use the demon-keys, even if I have them. UV-Max means I have to kill every monster myself or not at all. - Collect every item, if at all feasible, when doing UV-Max. This one's mostly OCD as having all but one category at 100% cracks my mortal soul at it's very core. - I have a tendency to prefer UV-Plus-Fast (coop spawns and -fast) to regular UV-Max most of the time. UV-Plus more so than UV-Fast because I'm not a good enough player to play already highly challenging maps on -fast. Hardest I ever did on UV-Fast was Sunder MAP02 and it took me a lot of effort and grinding (I also did MAP03, but I'm not certain if I ever actually finished it or not on -fast). Parts of Sunlust are also doable -fast, but it really crosses over into masochism at some point. - I have a tendency to force myself to play wads and maps that I actually dislike. Mostly to force myself out of my comfort zone. The results are very mixed. For instance, I started off with a strong dislike to JPCP map 11, but eventually it grew on me through sheer practise and I now adore JPCP in it's entirety. On the other hand, forcing myself to finish PL2 UV-Fast has left me crushed to the point where I don't want to play Plut 2 ever again, ever. But who are we kidding, I'll probably put myself through it again in a couple years. - Don't know if this counts, but I have a built in handicap. I'm colorblind. Meaning most maps with abundant greenery, rocky scenery, caves or darkness end up making some enemies invisible to me. (Most notably, I can't spot imps and zombiemen beyond short-medium range on PL2) Edited October 23, 2022 by CFWMagic 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ImproversGaming Posted October 23, 2022 I often enjoy trying to get through a tough encounter without the invun provided. Sometimes I prefer this as otherwise it can trivialise a good encounter. If I'm not having fun tough, I just pick it up and push on through. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zero Master's Clone Posted October 23, 2022 Sometimes I will play without my glasses because I am blind as a bat. I have to almost touch my face with my hand to see it without my glasses so the whole game looks like a bunch of blurry blobs moving around It has never gone well but it is fun to do. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
