Story behind your nickname?

Recommended Posts

The truth is-- I never wanted to use "Dubium" as my nickname. Here's a silly story behind it.

When I registered my account in February this year, I was asked to choose a nickname (just like everyone else). At that time, I could not think of a name that I would like to use. But then, I randomly remembered this game that just came around. It's basically Among Us but 3D. I never played the game myself, I simply remembered watching the gameplay.

So, I said to myself. "Dubium is a cool word. I'm going to use it for now, whatever. I just want to create this account ASAP" At that time, I thought I could change the name later on in the setting, so I didn't think twice. I didn't know you have to wait 6 months to be able to change your name.

I must admit, I regret using this name for some reason. But folks around here and on Discord already know me with this name, so I think I will just keep it.

I just simply stole it from the main character of a very obscure Nintendo DS game. I was super obsessed with it at the time, and it's still one of my favorite games of all time. The game's called Solatorobo: Red the Hunter.

Now, today I consider this game kinda silly and it's definitely pretty flawed, but I don't care. The name left a heavy mark and that's what I'll use forever, probably.

I thank my dumb teenage self for coming up with the most generic edgy profile name "Reaper" that TOTALLY isn't used by so many others and then adding AA (which are the initials of my real name) to it.

Plenty of times I thought of changing my username, but I don't know if I should now given that it has stuck with me for so long.

I just needed a username for Quakeworld. It doesn't hold any special meaning other than "it sounds cool".

"Pecho" is a nickname one of my best friends came up with, based on my name "Petar" (Peter). Pechudin is an extension of that.

Oh boy, well it's a bit of a long story but i'll tell you. Time for grandpa Scavenger to tell you about the good old days.

So when i was younger and when i got my first xbox 360 i choose the name deathdog77. the 77 was my football number and deathdog was an edgy name i wanted because i was an edgy teenager. Years later i wanted to change my name since i got a new xbox and all and i got a free do over with the name change. So i went with ScavengerWolf. Why? For one i loved wolves since i was 5 (i'm as old as Wolf3D now), and wolves are scavengers, so are ravens so in the end i went with it.

I also like the name change because i want to be remember as Scavenger not an edgy name from 2008 as a mapper.

Damn, that's the longest story I've ever heard.

I was going to use the nickname my IRL friends call me, but I thought that it would feel too personal for a bunch of strangers on the internet to call me that. So I just thought up of an alternative that I could see people using instead

Mine's just the name of a Sisters of Mercy album, which was taken from a quote by George H. W Bush and no doubt intended as a scathing commentary on American politics. Seeing as naming yourself after a record isn't that original, and three syllables is one too many IMO, I'm due a change. I just so happen to suck at coming up with usernames that are unique and memorable.

In Diablo 2 when you chose your Class, the Flames of the Necromancer are blue.

Somehow it merged instantly to Azuris in my Brain.

(Azul in spanish, Azurro italian, Azurblau exists in german)

Call me stupid. Mine uses my real name.

The "audio" part is easy enough to guess what it means, but how it got there? Well, I went to set up an account on a certain mail service, and "leejackson" had already been taken. I didn't want anything generic like "leejackson247" or whatever the system had suggested for me, so I tried "leejacksonaudio". The name was available, so I claimed it. The rest is, as they say, history.

So now that I remembered this topic (...d'oh), I guess I'll go into it.

This will be a long read, so I've spoilered it, as it's chock full of images and video (and really a repost of something I posted elsewhere over a decade ago).

Spoiler

Since some unfortunate persons made the mistake of thinking I nicknamed myself after a Pokemon move, I figure I'll clear the air on this.

  • "Darples named himself off a move from Pokemon." FALSE.
  • "Game Freak is responsible for Darples' nickname." TRUE.

Now, let me explain.

In the early 1990s, there was a little something called "Sega Channel." Some of you may remember it. It was really the precursor to emulation as we know it... except the mind-blowing thing was that this was for an actual, real, current-at-the-time console. 50 games a month, every month, from the popular and obvious (Gunstar Heroes) to the absolutely obscure.

That's kind of what I'll be talking about today.

Every so often, Sega Channel would have a section devoted to imports; games that, for some reason or another, never made it or would never make it stateside. I definitely remember finding Alien Soldier in there (though, of course, being 9-10 at the time, I got absolutely raped by the game) and some other lesser-known gems.

One of them was a little known gem called "Pulseman."

Pulseman-Stats.jpg

A lot of you will look at that, and you'll go "Oh shit, Megaman ripoff." Wrong. Couldn't be further from the truth. Pulseman was something else - it was damn fast (almost, if not faster, than Sonic at times) and besides your somewhat typical repertoire of moves at the time, he had a couple other moves (One of which was named the Volteccer) that kind of set him apart from something like Sonic or Megaman. It's thus best described as a bit of a blend of both, with its own unique elements thrown in.

However, it wasn't really that which impressed me. It was the graphics this thing put out.

(Videos courtesy of a translation patch. The game never got an English release, though cutscenes were fully voiced in English.)

Keep in mind this was 1994, and on a Sega Genesis. It was seriously one of the greatest-looking games I've ever played - flashy, colorful, and with music that goddamn stuck in my head and it still does to this day. It's not flawless, but damn if it wasn't fun and challenging to my mind at that time. I really, really, really wanted to buy it, but obviously, I knew I never could, because I knew it would not come out in the US.

Move forward about six years. I begin getting into computers and the internet around 2000, at this time making regular trips to a local library to use theirs as I still did not own my own PC. I lurked around the IGN boards for awhile, and eventually decided to join up. Naturally, I needed an email address, so I sought and found one - Hotmail. I decided to use "pulsemanfan001" as the alias for both the email, and the account. The email is long-gone, but it was used when I signed up for MSN Messenger (or as it's now called, Windows Live Messenger), and so it remains my MSN to this day. (2022 note: MSN/WLM is now gone, too!)

Either way, come 2001 or so, I begin finding GameFAQs. I sign up for an account there. By this time, "Pulsemanfan001" sounded not only long-winded, but also extremely, extremely fanboyish. Thus, I shortened it simply to "Pulse." To this day, this is the handle I am known at on GameFAQs; my account is still active, though obviously I don't visit there very much anymore. I'm something of a Legend there though, for the tumultuous times of LUE, Vets, LTU, and the RP/FF board.

The last of those is where my name came from. The character I conceived of basically had seven different forms. This is going to sound cheesy as shit, but what the hell, I was 16 - give me a break. Anyway, the seven forms I'd eventually settled on were Normal, Shin, Chou, Kou, Dark, Orochi, and Omega.

Of them, "Dark Pulse" simply had that ring to it. And so I've kept it ever since late 2001/early 2002 - predating the Pokemon games that the move known in English as Dark Pulse (and in Japan as Evil Pulse) by approximately a year or so, as those games didn't come to the US until 2003. It's by a tragic quirk of luck and nothing more that my nickname evolved into something identical to the English name of a Pokemon attack.

Which brings us full-circle to the beginning of this post. How, then, is Game Freak responsible? Simple. You may have noticed some similarities between the guy up there, and this guy:

rotom-normal.jpg

Those of you who know the Pokemon games will know this is one of Rotom's forms. This is not a coincidence. Indeed, if anything, the similarities are strikingly similar.

Game Freak developed both Pulseman and Pokemon. If you look in the credits of Pulseman, you'll see many, many people who worked on Pokemon, including Ken Sugimori, Junichi Masuda, and Satoshi Tajiri. Furthermore, the homages continue, right down to Pokemon's most known character - the Japanese name for the move the English world knows as "Volt Tackle" is - you guessed it - "Volteccer." Lastly, Dr. Waruyama, the big bad of Pulseman, runs a criminal organization called the "Galaxy Gang." There's one of those in Pokemon, too - the English versions translate it as "Team Galactic" but they both share the same Japanese name, "Ginga-dan." Both translations are correct.

But so ends this rather long blogpost. I hope this clears the confusion. Now if anyone else accuses me of simply being an unimaginative hack, or worse, a Pokemon fanatic (I like the games, but fanatic? Hardly), they're getting one-dayed, on the spot, no questions asked. Srs.

Now, use the comment field below to share your own tales of nickname acquisition and/or evolution. Make me think that I didn't just waste half an hour of my life writing this up. :P

Oh, and for the love of god, go play Pulseman. Either dig up the ROM on the internet and throw it on Kega Fusion, or if you got a Wii, go buy it from the Wii Shop for Virtual Console.

Maybe someday, they'll make a sequel... or at least someone will code up a level editor.

So this is a really random one. I used to name myself on the internet after my favorite game at the moment (which when I came up with this one was Mario Kart 7) but then I saw a meme that has the word "swag". Me being the big racing game fan that I am, decided to keep the "kart" part and rest is history

A while after I got into some drama on Discord and decided to do a slight rebrand so people would forget 'bout me and that's how I came to the name "SwagsKart"

I used to be a huge fan of video game countdown makers, who typically had nicknames based on characters in video games (The Autarch of Flame, Fawful’s Minion, The Fiery Joker, etc) And I began on YouTube by making countdown videos like that, and I settled on “The Spoony Bard” since I wanted to be a musician, and I had recently played through Final Fantasy IV. Not a super badass name, I know, but I thought it was suitably light-hearted.

Only about a year ago did I add “Some” onto the beginning, just because I wanted to make it more unique, and the whole time I was going by the original username I kept getting confused for Noah Antwiler or “The Spoony One” from Channel Awesome.

i have a very weird nick XD.

Story:

first time i had PC on 96 (i was 10 years old, before i played on Dendy a NES clone) me and my friend start playing Heroes of Might and Magic 1 he named himself Medic and i was stuck here, i wanted to use nickname 'Crow' (because i very like a film CROW - Brandon Lee), but this is too gothic and i think wearing that nick will be magnet for bad things.

And i used an 'Art' nickname then (as Ukrainian i didn't know English very well), and ART because i like to draw , i draw monsters from Corridor 7, mazes , animals, and new levels for Lode Runner (util 2002, i lost my house with all my Art's, and nick became unrelated).

In 2002 i had disk cd-rom with HeXen game, and i quickly realized that Crow can be replaced with Raven.

I used 'RaVeN' nickname  to be funky of each big letter exactly , played a lot of Quake 3 , and i been just crazy with that.

in 2006 i connected to internet for first time XD.

And what i wanted is to find out is there HeXeN lovers here? i find site hexen.clan.su now a hexen-game.ru i had nostalgia of hexen for this time so strong. I registered as RaVeN.

After i start realizing that i have difficulties to register as RaVeN on other forums (nickname was  used before me) i start use 'RaVeN-05' nickname, but its looks aweful. I didn't like it. I like number 5 - V in middle of nick is 5 =)

I wanted to use 'BlackMagicRaven', but again i think its just obvious (and by hype of Gothic sub-culture can be used by someone), i find out White-Gothic sub culture, and i trough lets change to White, and White is good side, and to be honest i lovely and friendly person so that is best fit to me.

and now i 'WhiteMagicRaven'

Some Anglophones might think Im a big fanboy of the Greek alphabet tau, but in fact it's just my real name and my birth year. Simple as. I first used it as early as 2009 on a local forum. That username stuck on my mind and has since been used in various other places on the 'Net. Never been worried much about private data at first, but now I don't care much about changing this username, as my name isn't all too uncommon in my country. :P

I also go by another username in a few other places; TheFieryWind. It's based on the meaning of my name, itself related with the word "typhoon" (a violent kind of windblow. Got it?).

I remember when your name was "InDOOMnesia" for a while, which I thought was a kind of cute pun.

Fun fact: I actually intended on making it a project designated to spread the word of DOOM to fellow folks of my own country, but for many reasons that never materialized. Oh well, life goes on anyway.

Only in 2021 did I get to change it back to taufan99, and I just recently found out that in early 2022, a single developer is making a GZDoom-based game Mala Petaka (an Indonesian word that essentially means "doom"), and that uac_dead.wad was made by (very possibly) an Indonesian Chinese guy who studied in USA, what with the map's setting being in Jakarta lol

Yes, with this name on Doomworld too, although I don't use it as actively as I used to now. I'm at the ZDoom server, and have seen you there as well!

ZeroTheHero was used in a game I used to spend hours on. I opted to boot the H out and thus become my nickname for a lot of places.

And yes, it is intentional.
