Lucius Wooding Posted October 20, 2022 Not turning into a Doom Hipster with weird contrarian opinions, not causing flame wars with hot takes about popular maps, hiding the fact that I don't play Doom regularly enough to keep an audience. We have the forums for all that. Also people asking and expecting every creator to beat super hard maps or stuff that they don't like. In all seriousness though, Youtube is an awful platform even though the content is good. From the creator side, every channel seems to get strikes and demonetization for no reason from time to time and the platform more or less just tells them to deal with it. All the automatic moderation and flagging stuff for kids and all that bullshit. Also people have to make clickbait videos and play the algorithm game as a price of doing business, which makes the shittiest content often float to the top over good smaller channels. If you have fewer than 100k subs and don't do makeup tutorials they basically want you to fuck off altogether. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Roofi Posted October 20, 2022 (edited) Playing wads you don't necessarly want to because X subscribers recommended you to play them. Playing Doom when you don't feel like it, but you have to stay active to avoid being forgotten. Not exclusive to doomtubers, I think for many youtubers, playing games become more work than pleasure, especially when you have to fake reactions. TheCarsEdge Posted October 20, 2022 not a doomtuber but i can imagine some difficulties playing (disliked) wads reccomended from subscribers the fact that classic DOOM is pretty much a niche too little substantial content before it all becomes about the coding of the game (ex. decino, 50% of his theories videos are analyzing the code of DOOM and DOOM II) 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Major Arlene Posted October 20, 2022 (edited) I'm more of a DoomStreamer these days than a DoomTuber but as others have pointed out, Doom, and map-making especially, is pretty niche on Twitch and the like. but the almighty algorithm is pretty fucked no matter where you go- not a situation unique to Doom, unfortunately. 2 hours ago, Roofi said: Playing wads you don't necessarly want to because X subscribers recommended you to play them. Eh- you are still the owner of your channel at the end of the day. make the content you want to make and enjoy making. it becomes obvious when you don't enjoy something but try to power through anyways and becomes uncomfortable to watch. Kinetic Posted October 20, 2022 (edited) the hard part comes when one of your videos gets popular and ur like "omg views" then you try and pander and then you can't get more views and then the ez part comes when u realize it's ur channel and u just can post whatever the hell u want whenever u want. It can be hard to pull away from the numbers and stats aspect of youtube, but eventually you develop a core audience that will like whatever you post and then you can only care abt them which is p cool, especially if you talk to them or know them outside of youtube comments. It's also very hard not trying to tell ppl to smash that like button and epic turbo subscribe and activate the bell icon so they never miss a video from you and also create clickbait thumbnails that riff on a certain thumbnail format established by someone on doomtube idk :D. and if you ask the most popular doomtubers what the hardest part is they'll mention the commenters :^). Edit: I also forgot epic rip and tear guys until it is done (after doom music is done kicking in) Edited October 20, 2022 by KineticBeverage 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
David Asaad Posted October 21, 2022 (edited) Any form of obligation or pressure that is self-induced is mine. In my first year or so, I pushed myself to post as if I was obligated to do something keep the channel alive, but nowadays, Ive let go of it and only post when something substantial inspires me to make a video. so if theres a map I enjoy enough to run, or I come up with some idea that I wanna make, thats the only circumstance Ill post. if this means I run out of maps I wanna run or advice to give to runners or mapping tips, so be it :) so ig id tell my past self to not be afraid of picking and choosing maps from a wad, and dont be afraid to go for some time without uploading anything. This allows me to put my all into a video bc I actually enjoy making it Edited October 21, 2022 by David Asaad 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
CBM Posted October 21, 2022 I am sick of youtubers begging for likes and subscriptions so I just dont talk about it at all on my channel. if people want to then fine and if not then thats fine as well... I will never get enough viewers for it to matter anyway 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
xScavengerWolfx Posted October 21, 2022 I think the hardest thing is trying to keep up with all the videos you make and going insane. I mean i stop making videos because i felt like it wasn't going anywhere and i manly did it to show off wads for on doom world. Also gotta take in the fact that my storage is full and i can't figure tell what ram i need to upgrade to. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

EngineerKappa Posted November 3, 2022 Every now and then I think about doing Youtube videos, but the thing stopping me always felt like trying to carve a niche. I'm not a speedrunner, I'm not good enough at the game to do challenge runs of the hardest WADs, I haven't mapped enough to do mapping videos or guides, and I don't have a wide enough experience with the overall community to do reviews/recommendations. Basically nothing terribly interesting to contribute that hasn't been done better by anyone else. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

DoomPlayer00 Posted November 3, 2022 (edited) Video about some specific thing in Doom, a meme etc.: Trying to come up with an unique idea for a shorter video. Playthrough: Practicing a difficult map until you can reliably uv max it, then trying to do it flawlessly in a quick time when recording. Music: While making a soundtrack video isn't hard by itself, I hate when the editing software shits itself and you lose like 30 minutes of progress in editing. Nikku4211 Posted November 3, 2022 Actually having anything to say when playing maps. Whenever I play something, I really have nothing interesting to say when doing so. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
InfernalMonsoon Posted November 3, 2022 Standing out and branching out to towards the entire series are the patterns I've noticed. Most Doomtubers seem to stick to a specific Doom game, namely Eternal as of late, and never really leave that comfort zone. And when they do they often start to cover non-Doom stuff. And for those who are more Classic-inclined I imagine it's difficult coming up with truly fresh content that isn't reviewing/showcasing wads they've been playing. Personally I don't think covering purely Doom stuff is all that sustainable on its own since it could quickly lead to burn out as videos get very samey quickly. It's better to cover Doom stuff along with a bunch of other things you and your audience would be interested. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

magicsofa Posted November 3, 2022 1 hour ago, Nikku4211 said: Actually having anything to say when playing maps. Whenever I play something, I really have nothing interesting to say when doing so. Yeah, I've seen more than one wad "review" where the person plays the whole map in silence and then at the end says "yeah, pretty good map." That's not what I want as a viewer! There's so much you could talk about. Whether you are reviewing/critiquing, or just playing because you feel like it, maps offer a lot to comment on: Visuals: Yes, we can see what you are doing. But what do you think about it? When you see something interesting, stop for a second and say what it is you like about it, what you think it represents, why you find it appealing. If you see something bland or ugly or that you dislike for some reason, explain why. "This hallway is so empty, it doesn't match the detail level of the areas before it." or "Nice structure in the distance, to me it looks like a communication tower. I like that you see it looming long before you reach it." Gameplay: What do you think of the enemy placement? As you reach each new area/combat scenario, is it harder, is it easier, is it clever? Can you predict what will be thrown at you every time? Talk about what strategies you are going to use before you actually do it. Talk about the weapon progression in the map, if you are pining for more shotgun shells or drowning in cell ammo, tell your viewers Concept: How does the entire map come together? Are you getting any sense of progression, plot, story, or location... or is it just a random hodgepodge of rooms and hallways? What feelings are evoked as you play through... are you scared, curious, bored, confused, ego-tripping? Is there a concept that is suggested but missing some elements to really bring it home? Or is the map hammering something into your brain so hard that it's annoying and monotonous... tell us about it Technical: Comment on the functionality of the map. Note parts where monsters can get stuck, where moving parts get in the way or don't work as intended, or where the function of something is unclear. Talk about movement, whether its easy to move around, constantly bopping your head, unclear where to go, etc. Talk about parts that are able to be skipped, useless keys, and so on. I guess as someone whose written a bunch of reviews and also spent a fair amount of time mapping, I can find a lot to talk about in almost any level. It might help you to read other reviews, watch detailed videos where they actually talk, or do a little mapping yourself if you haven't already. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
