Well, if you are using Boom, you won't need self-referencing sectors. Just use line action 242: Create Fake Floor and Ceiling to make sectors that share tag with the line drawn at height of the sector in front of the line.

self-referencing sectors are very simple to create. Start by making two sectors, with one fully enclosed by the other. For example:

The larger "outer" sector here is sector 0, the smaller "inner" sector (the one that's highlighted) is sector 1. Select the lines making up the highlighted sector, and right-click:

Each side of these four lines refers to one of the two sectors. The front side (where the little nub on the lines is pointing in the editor) is considered part of sector 0, while the back side is considered part of sector 1. All you have to do is change the sector index of the front side for these lines to 1. After doing that, both the front and back sides will be considered part of the same sector, and not part of sector 0 (hence, "self-referencing").

Now sector 1 will appear completely invisible in gameplay. If you raise the floor of sector 1, it will create an invisible platform:

If you lower its floor, this will cause the deep-water effect (as seen in TNT map 02):

Feel free to take a look at the WAD to see for yourself: example.zip
