The DWIronman league dies to: Doom E1

EDIT: Fixed the run time, its 49:20.

Ok, so I just survived my Category 2* run (with secret map completed), but my E1M8 ended without a scoreboard screen so here's how I figured out my time:

- E1M7 was finished at 47:26 ingame time

- E1M8 started at 48:07 in the video

- E1M8 finished at 50:01

Which makes my final time roughly 49:20. Video here: (still needs processing time)

* My prior experience with the maps is playing them to death as a teenager in the mid-90s, then watching decino's "Doom the way we remember it" playthrough about a year ago (which is super cursed). Honestly, my wasted youth helped a ton in this one, its amazing how long those memories stay in your brain.

Spoiler

When I saw the DeHackEd changes for this challenge, I knew I'd have to play it careful - 50 damage imp fireballs are no joke and I have no experience with fast monsters speedruns.

Things went pretty smoothly for the first half of the episode.

E1M5's ambush after the yellow door is a bit rough, luckily I remembered how to work elevators and doors and got out of there.

E1M6's final fight is no joke, almost got cornered and died on that one.

Got down to sub-10% health on E1M7 through sheer attrition, but then I figured out how to get the secret blue armor and soulsphere and it was smooth sailing for the rest of the run.

Category 2 run, died on E1M8 to a spectre with about 22/41 monsters killed.

I was so damn close after nearly dying on E1M1, but a Baron shot hit me for 90% and then the Spectre finished me off. A rather frustrating end considering I'd gotten used to the custom difficulty, but oh well.

Just realized I hadn't posted about the yearly board yet... damn.

@Bdubzzz has a realistic chance to mathematically secure the 1st place this month, and @Beginner is all but set to finish 2nd. The battle for 3rd just got more tense due to @Maribo's absence last month as Anima and myself overtook them - @dt_'s blazing run and @Anima Zero's less fortunate offering this month will make it even closer for sure. After a two month absence, @BoxY leaves the top 10 while @LadyMistDragon takes their spot, recovering exceptionally from the "worst possible" debut performance in March. Despite missing a month, @mhrz is still the highest placed "rookie" (using it liberally, as mhrz delivered exactly one run prior to 2022) though under pressure from LadyMistDragon and @ginc. @Asbadagba continues to climb up the ladder and goes into the top 20 having only participated four times before this month; and surviving 2/4 times (3/5 now), definitely someone to look out for next year!

Still bottom 5 but considering I never play saveless I'm proud of this lmao

Category 2, died on E1M9 after 10:15 with 69/105 kills. I thought that E1M9 would be a bit of a pain from memory and thought about skipping it, but I opened the secret exit and went for it, should not have done that :P

Spoiler

"Eh I need the health, how bad could it be" I thought to myself before triggering the rocket launcher trap that led to my demise. Ah, hubris.

Category 2, Survived in 44:31.

I am not used to -fast monsters at all; those Pinkys were really unnerving. And they paired well with the ammo starvation of the new resource balance. I thought it was especially interesting how, rather than it just being speed tech, these settings incentivize every player to risk using more rockets just to save a buck.

This was a really cool way to breathe new life into a route I thought I was familiar with. There were some encounters where I’d grown used to just spending some blue armor and scraping right past them, and it was jarring having to reevaluate and treat each threat with more care. Heh, it’s like these settings made Knee-Deep In The Dead as scary as I remember it having been when I was 10. Neat idea for an Ironman.
