Most Excruciating Gaming Accomplishments?

I have little tolerance for frustration. If a game is pissing me off then I am more likely to just not bother with it.

Defeating Gwyn, Lord of Cinder on the first run twice (the second was on NG+), it wasn't really hard, in fact, there was harder fights (The Abyss boss bullshit).

Also, I finished all Sims GBA games, one after another, probably not a hard task but did you know how is playing like 6 games of the same franchise in a marathon?!

The one that I'm proud is getting all Postal 2 (Including DLC) achievements, seriously, completing the game in POSTAL difficulty was a complete pain.

Finished Ninja Gaiden on NES in one life.

Finished Final Fantasy on NES with four White Mages -- not super hard, but pretty tedious.

Can't really think of any other stunt gaming feats I've performed, since I don't usually have the attention span to get that good at a game.

getting all of the platinum relics in the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy was really hard to do. a good portion of them aren't too bad to get, but then you hit some levels that are just completely soul destroying to finish. specifically, Stormy Ascent is absolute hell to do, requiring nearly perfect memorisation to finish, taking 3 real life minutes to finish, and having a bullshit RNG part at the end requiring bouncing on three birds to cross a gap that is very hard to predict how to get across safely, and you can't take your time and have to blindly jump and hope you leaped at the right time, or else do the entire thing over again. it currently holds the record of "angriest i've ever been at a video game" and i don't recommend doing this unless you're very determined to see it through or incredibly stubborn (like me).

edit: i forgot to mention that Stormy Ascent alone took me 3 actual hours to complete. 3 hours of painstaking memorisation and patience-testing until i finally did it.

Getting a perfect character in Oblivion. Careful planning of every level up, only increasing the skills you need until your max level, followed by days of power leveling minor skills. End up with 100 in every attribute and skill.

I installed a mod that automatically gives me a +5 just to avoid that tedium. I did it once on the x360 version to get Endurance maxed out ASAP, never again. With how that game works you also need to avoid almost every quest, avoid certain regions, never install most of the DLCs till your level 30, buy up all the spells in Anvil before KOTN gets installed, etc...theres also stunts like installing Frostcrag Spire, going inside, then uninstalling it to get into a test cell legitimately, so you can get the Mace of Doom.

I lost all that to a harddrive error :(

Getting through the car scene in Alone In The Dark (2008).

That was the only time in my life that I've ever had a neighbor mention me yelling at a TV. I failed this thing fourteen times, and it was the first time I had actually thrown a controller since I was seven years old and my older brother kept beating my ass at Street Fighter 2.

"I heard you yelling at your videogame yesterday."

"Oh shit, you heard that? Yeah it pissed me off, and then I went back to it today and beat it in one try."

And he laughed.

There was an endurance race in Gran Turismo 3 (I think) that legitimately took 24 hours to do and it was absolutely miserable, by the end of it we had worked out a tag team system where 2 of us would opt in for 3 hour intervals and then swap, there was also the less daunting 100 laps simulation race which was also miserable but dramatically less so.

Can confirm without a shadow of a doubt that it indeed was not worth the effort in the slightest.

When my car literally fell through the road I took this game back to the shop and got a refund. This game was an insane disappointment, they really hyped it up and it was an absolute pile of dogshit. Good soundtrack though, I guess.

I remember that race, always wondered if anyone was actually crazy enough to attempt it. Fair play to you I would never have tried, imagine you'd crashed on the last lap!

The one that always sticks in my mind is when i finished Zelda 2 (on the master quest gamecube disc) when i was like 14 or so. Not such a big deal nowadays but back then it was the first time I kept at a difficult game until the end

You tried out the Path of Pain yet? It lives up to its name.

I left the game at the part where you get to start collecting essence and have put in on hold because I'm trying out the games I got for the Halloween Steam sale. I will be resuming my playthrough more sooner than later tho, Hollow Knight is a good 'un.

Wouldn't call these excruciating, since I tend not to take on tedious bullshit challenges. But my highest gaming accomplishments:

Getting 1CC on Battletoads, NES, US version, no warps.

Getting KO & 1st round TKO on Mike Tyson in Punch-Out!!

1CC Turtles in Time (SNES) hard mode.

1CC original Castlevania on NES.

No cheating or savestates for any of these. In case you're not familiar, 1CC means One Credit Clear, meaning you're allowed to lose lives, but you beat the game without using a continue.

Completing the He Who Dwells boss fight in Infamous Second Son. I've played through the game multiple times now and I can get through it first-try, but back when I first played it that boss fight was a pain to complete.

The only reason I couldn't beat Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks in the PS2 back in the day was because Shao Kahn was just so hard and despite the many many tries I just couldn't finish him. Also on PS2, Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition had some pretty tough bosses that made me sweat while trying to get through them. Luckily I was able to beat DMC3 after all.

It's been a long time since I've played it, obviously, it's been 14 years. But I don't necessarily recall it being that bad. I know it was overhyped to Hell and back, and it was nothing like the original Alone in the Darks, but it wasn't a terrible game per se. At least not the linear first part. Once you got to that car section, and Central Park was opened up and destroying the roots of evil was introduced, I quickly lost interest. But it was at least a functional game up until that point, and it did have some really neat fire and burning effects.

I guess that it was a good thing that I had only rented it; I do feel bad for those that bought it. However I am impressed that the store actually gave you a refund. Did you have to explain to them why it was shit? Or had they had so many people already return it that that they already knew? I don't think I've ever actually tried to return a console game, but I wouldn't think most places would let you do it. I'd imagine Gamestop at least would only give you store credit, or a trade in.

It seems it was the latter, they didn't even really question it. It was also Gamestation, back when they were around before GAME absorbed them, might have had more lax policies.

Spoiler

It feels like necroposting even after just a few days.

By far not the most excruciating (not that I can remember the), but today while home sick with the flu, I beat Duke Nukem Forever in a single nine hour sitting (this seems to be the only way I can play video games nowadays, either I never do or I experience everything in one go). For the first four or so hours, things were unironically fun. Even when I wasn't laughing at the game's sheer incompetence, there was a lot of fun to be had naturally. Then fatigue set in. Tedium got tedious. All of DNF's little 'quirks' and 'surprises' that had amused me now plagued me until the final recycled boss fight (you need to turn on VSYNC to make a jump in Duke's monster truck. I can't tell if that's better or worse than needing to cap the framerate in San Andreas to swim). My final thoughts? Cutting your face off with a piece of broken glass and feeding it to an anthill is probably a better Duke Nukem experience.

Ah, another DNF "enjoyer". I 100% completed Duke Nukem Forever, which involved playing the campaign three times. In my defense, it was years ago and I had nothing better to do at the time.

One of my most fond gaming memories is playing the Subspace Emissary Mode in Super Smash Bros. Brawl with my older brother. I know there's plenty of valid criticisms of SE nowadays, from both a gameplay and story perspective. Regardless, I still love it for being one of the most epic campaigns in a Nintendo game even when accounting for my nostalgia of it.

While finishing the Great Maze and defeating the final boss were respectable accomplishments themselves, it was nothing compared to unlocking the Tabuu trophy. In Subspace Emissary, one of the items that would randomly spawn were coin-shaped objects called Trophy Stands. When thrown at an enemy, they are essentially turned into statues which can be added to a gallery where you can view and read information about them. My brother and I had already gone through the effort of collecting all the other bosses. We desperately wanted Tabuu's as we had seen images of it online and thought it would make a great addition to our Trophy collection. In order to obtain it, however, it meant we had to grind the final boss fight over lengthy period of time.

More than half of the time, the stand wouldn't even show up. When it did, it was a agonizing task to hit Tabuu with it. Throwing these items has a wind-up animation that lasts about a second but feels like an eternity since Tabuu floats and teleports all around the stage. Countless trophy stands were thrown off stage trying to hit the transdimensional entity; only for him to just pop up right behind us. There were plenty of times in which the item would spawn but Tabuu performed an attack that kept us away long enough for it to eventually disappear on its own. In addition, he possesses a variety of forms which the stands have no effect on. This being the final boss, we also dreaded whenever he adopted his winged form to use "Off-Waves"; an insanely overpowered attack that can instantly kill players if they don't perform a series of well timed dodges.

Spoiler

Here's a demonstration of the Tabuu boss fight.

Once we got the timing of his attacks down, we were able consistently defeat Tabuu but nailing him with the stand was something that still managed to elude us. After weeks of failing to capture Tabuu, I managed to get a hold of the stand while my brother continued to whale on him with Pit's aerials and providing me cover whenever he could. Then, Tabuu teleported near the center of the stage just a few feet off the ground. giving me a clear shot. I jumped up, threw the stand, and it finally petrified him into a trophy. Anybody at that moment would have lost their hearing if they were in the same room as us. We simultaneously shouted "YEAH!" and proceeded to completely lose our minds. I triumphantly walked up to Tabuu's trophy and added him to the collection.

This all happened before I was even a teenager, so it probably wouldn't be as difficult to pull off if I were to redo the challenge over again. However, I don't think any achievement in video games will ever come as close to being this satisfying for me. Any time I bring up this moment to my brother, his immediately bears a confident grin which I can't help but mimic it in return.
