SSG Addicts Anonymous.

It is a well known fact that the Doom 2 community is addicted to the Super Shotgun. Its vile, fleshly trappings such that, to this day, 5 out of every 6 deathmatch levels have SSGs at or near every deathmatch player start.

From such fact has borne this thread: SSG Addicts Anonymous. Helping out each other, like brothers and sisters, in a holy expedience into abstinence and, eventually, freedom!

This is a safe haven — feel free to share your stories and experiences with the SSG, as well as resources of comradely support. Everything helps in these dire times of decades-long addiction.

Super Shotgun may be healthy in moderate doses, but keep an eye on your ammo counter. If you find yourself regularly running out of shotgun ammo while you have 400 bullets, it's a clear sign of addiction. (Beware of SSG-addicted mappers who might mask the symptom by placing shell boxes around every corner)

The Super Shotgun does not let me go. It understands and embraces me from my love and care for all shotguns double-barreled or otherwise. It ingrained itself so much in my life that it will not let me move one moment without making me think of its hot wall of lead, its seductive barrels and buttstock, and its all-sensitive trigger. She wants to turn me into her lover, her companion, her roommate-for-life, and perhaps her husband. But it is all an illusion. She does not love me for my own self, she does it for my t-spot hitting fingers, and my cleaning rod capability. She knows I always feed her with the proper red plastic and yellow brass 10-gauge double-ought buckshot. She is crazy, she always craves more of me and bites away at my sanity and body with iron fangs. She is violent, she craves such violence, she relishes in the slaughter of man, mental, physical or metal.

We have had amazing times together, but it has devolved into a hellishly abusive relationship in which I must get out of. Oh, how foolish I was from not refraining to that sweet and polite girl with a pump, and not listening to my friends of argent plasma and multibarrel. I gave it all to the Super Shotgun, and lost everything in the process.

This is the best post on Doomworld, its all downhill from here.

Dear Diary,

So it happened again. Back in the UAC where they wouldn't let me be, i was on a ''search and rescue'' mission. The one who needed rescuing, was myself.

I arrived at the containment area. No imp in sight. I wondered why in the hell i was even sent away. I am just a guy, doomed to roam these hellscapes. Kicking ass, and chewing bubblegum, but like my brother back at home, i am all out of gum.

I digress. At the end of the border, there the imps came. Their ghoulish demeanor never gets old. Flesh is what they want, but the rip and the tear are on my account. I am once again at the Shores of Hell, those devilish waters that forever remain to be seen.

Pulling out my pistol, i wondered why we never get better weapons. Every encounter sees the gun perform less and less effective, as if the imps and zombiemen learn to adapt. I am supposed to slay the beast, but the only thing slain is my self-confidence.

I need bigger guns. I need better ammo.

From back home they provided me with better stuff, but its too early days for me. The rocket launcher looks great, but i am not sure what else lies ahead.

All i have is a Shotgun. Hell, i wish i had more barrels to go with them.

That's all for now diary. I am called to the confinery. A new mission awaits. A new day, yet one that never ends.

Signed,

B. Dacote

Did the RO hexadecatuple-barreled shotgun at least make it to the semifinals?

I was going strong on No SSG November, but then 4 pinkies appeared in a small room and I lapsed in a moment of weakness. I'm ashamed to admit my failure and I hope my fellow doomers will stay strong where I couldn't. Worst of all, I had both the berserk and chainsaw to fall back on but old habits die hard.

Funnily enough, I've been replaying Plutonia lately (my first run of it on UV), and the experience has made me realize that the normal Shotgun also has its use cases even when you have the SSG. Namely for sniping faraway targets, since the SSG's spread makes it rather unreliable for that purpose.

That said, I still love and (over)use the SSG way more.

It's quite simply an amazing weapon. More tedious than a rocket launcher perhaps, but with enough ammo generally to be an excellent workhorse gun. Although at the same time, mappers spamming Barons or Mancubi solely to make maps more difficult without providing some rockets will earn my permanent ire.

Yeah I try to swap around and if your pistol starting you gotta find one first but no denying the SSG is the most versatile weapon in the game, looks the coolest and feels the most satisfying. It's almost unfair to the other guns.

After a recent playtest of one of my maps, I got an angry feedback rant because I tried to make my map chaingun-centric (asking to chaingun a grand total of ONE HK), and was 'holding back big boy weapons like the SSG'. The addiction is deeply rooted indeed.

Time to make a map with an SSG.... at the end!

I noticed this about barons tho (in D1)  that if you use them, people will probably find a way to complain, but if you use cacos like hks people will probably complain, but then if you make that a D2 map and use a HK (no other D1 stuff) people still complain. Just shows people's reliance on the ssg, y'know, I've gotten good at berserk punching Hell Knights and Barons Of Hell thanks to scythe (PSX Doom instilled some sense of confidence in me), and dare I say, it's more satisfying than using the SSG, yeah it's hard, yeah I don't just have to left-click 3 times, but it's fun.

(Helped by the fact that I'm making a tyson map based on an old starting room)

Also the shotgun and the chaingun are my fav weapons to use on fodder, but if I don't get an SSG for a while, I will use it on fodder when I do.

Also Plasma is GOATed and no-one can tell me no, its my favourite Doom weapon, what can I say.

(Plasma - SSG on barons is perfect, especially when they die to that ssg shot.)

Frankly, SSG addiction is getting out of hand with some of these younger Doomers. I watch streams/recordings and frequently see them exhausting all their shells while they have 20 rockets and 200 plasma cells.

I don't understand this playstyle at all. What are they saving the ammo for? What baffles me even more is if there's a fight revolving around picking up a superior weapon (rl, plasma rifle, bfg), the first thing these people do is switch back to ssg upon pickup. Disgusting.

For when it's really needed (tm). Like consumables in RPGs.

I've had this problem in younger years, when all I played was continuos IWADS. The main factors that got me over were:

a) pistol starting - no easy access to some 60 carryover shells and all weapons forces to actually work with what you've got.

b) playing more modern combat puzzle/set-piece/slaughter wads - exploration often feels "solved" by defaulting to SSG (even though SG and CG are great for rapid exploration when picking off fodder and ofc rule sniping niche), but set pieces require to interact with other guns and learn their ways.

c) lowered tedium tolerance - the good old "SSG barons" adage, I'm firmly on the "ain't got no time for that" side nowadays. I'll use my rockets, even the last ones. Or beserk as it's more interactive.

d) playing exploration-type maps to survive as much as I can (low/sparse saves) - plasma is a lot more attractive choice when dying has a price (whether in form of going back a while or self-esteem :))

If someone wants to overcome SSG addiction, I can heartily recommend any combination of these - till-first-death continuos play can probably be as much of a trigger to improve weapon selection as pistol-starting.

I've noticed SSG crutching is so bad that I actively buff the bullet weapons and give the SSG either last or as a secret when mapping now.

If I see "could do with an SSG" in anymore feedback comments on newer wads then I will be supplanting your colon with one.

It seems to be natural for newer players to overuse shotguns in classic Doom games and this is true especially with the SSG. Chaingun kinda lacks the impact of the shotguns, rocket launcher can be very risky weapon to use in many situations for multiple reasons and plasma gun/bfg are often being saved for just Spiderdemon/Cyberdemon encounters or very big crowds of higher tier enemies. SSG gives you also bigger shotgun blast so it's easy to assume that it is always better to use than the normal shotgun and it is bit of a hassle to keep switching between the shotguns.

Actually starting to use normal shotgun more than ssg really improved my gameplay alot because I started to use other weapons more too as a side effect and got me actually good at managing my ammo.

I suppose it's cause a lot of doom takes place in pretty close quarters. Map02 is a sewer chock-full of popcorn-tier enemies, Map05 is similarly cramped and stuffed with baddies. It's only natural that people would gravitate towards the least-accurate weapon.
