Peak GZDoom

It's funny that I'm the one talking about GZDoom, but I want to know, in terms of features, graphics, etc., what do you think is the best showcase game/wad/pk3/etc for GZDoom?

Hideous Destructor. Not so much for graphics*, but for the well implemented controls that account for things like size/weight of a weapon, momentum, injuries, side effects of 'medicine' and so on. Not only that but the improvements to the enemy AI keeps the combat interesting and threatening, even if you're well equipped (or have difficulty turned down) it remains engaging to play. Always lots of options for how to tackle a situation, always fear that something unexpected will happen--the monsters do not stay dead, and they frequently wake up before you think they will. It rewards creativity and bravery, and it punishes cowardice and repetition. Easily my favourite mod out there

 

*there are many skin packs for it out there, but I just stick with the stock stuff which is mostly cleaned up versions of the original sprites

It’s a very… divisive mod, and not one I enjoy playing myself, but it’s utterly fascinating and has enough of a scene formed around it that I can’t realistically deny it it’s stripes.

 

It won’t truly be a Bohemia-like until it adds text-to-speech squadmate chatter, though. OH NO. THREE. IS DOWN.

Similar in style to Batandy’s P.T., Solace Dreams and Total Chaos are graphically interesting and spooky. For a feeling of “wait, you can do that?” there’s Doom Tournament and Doomreal - put simply its all of Unreal and Unreal Tournament’s weapons put straight into GZDoom, 3D models and all.

When it works it really works, a military sim with a “traditional FPS” roster. Not many of those out there.

^This. Selaco is the most impressive thing I have seen on GZDoom to this day. The environment destruction looks like something that shouldn't be possible on GZDoom, but it is!!

I think Brutal Doom honestly gets a bad rep. It might not have the same feel as standard Doom, and it may be 3edgy5me in terms of gore and blood, but it still is impressive from a tecnical standpoint.

I think mods that use (and abuse) just about every scripting feature under the sun can also be something worth looking at. Take Lithium, for example. The work that goes on that mod is honestly astonishing. Recently, it implemented a dynamic weather system, of all things.

Honestly my favourite big GZdoom stuff so far is probably Batandy's Golden Souls and Castlevania stuff, Time Tripper, Hellshots Golf, the Steam-Released games made on the GZDoom engine.

 

Actually yeah the idea you can get a proper GZDoom game on Steam for money is still mad to me.

Selaco, Golden Souls, Total Chaos, Disdain, Ashes Saga and even QC: Doom edition are really better ideas and peak gzdoom expansion on make many things posible on GZDOOM.

 

Brutal Doom showed a lot of juice when was updated, but now in comparation with the updates on the engine and new ways of programing, modeling, etc, it's just low on the list of using Gzdoom and their full potential. and that's say a lot of the engine.

It's really not if you look at the code of older versions, it was a mess, the developer cleaned it up a bit and optimized it, but all of the graphical features it has were made long before Brutal Doom was a thing, the developer just copied and pasted them and didn't credit the creators.

Agreed. Game looks amazing... any idea when it comes out?

Basically a mod that replaces the blood color(s) into white. Originally intended to be a red blood color mod because people complain about lack of red blood so far, a technical limitation causes the assets to be rendered in grayscale, which looks like you know what. The developer decided to release the mod as it is, with a rather humorous spin.
