DoctorKlump Posted November 13, 2022 it really dosent make sense because im pretty sure doom wasnt even the first fps game, so why was everyone of them considered a doom clone? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Murdoch Posted November 13, 2022 Because Doom blew the lid off the genre. They were nowhere near as prevelant beforehand. The term came later than Doom as well. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Herr Dethnout Posted November 13, 2022 The term "Doom clone" is not used in a peyorative way (is kinda similar calling a game Rogue-like), just for clarify heh. The reason why is called it is because Doom was "The Pilar" into the FPS genre, although FPS and First Person games existed way before Doom it not on the same level of popularity as Doom, and a lot of FPS during the 90's take Doom as a template, most of it having a gameplay similar in essence. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rudolph Posted November 13, 2022 (edited) It is like how every platformer set in a semi-open world and featuring mild RPG elements is referred to as a Metroidvania nowadays. Ironically, the first non-linear Castlevania title came out the same year as Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, which also played very much like a Metroidvania. Rudolph Posted November 13, 2022 I do not know how titles work around here. Maybe it is just a custom ironic title? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted November 13, 2022 I think the mods got sick of the spammy threads, although it's probably just a 30-day vacation or something. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Aaron Blain Posted November 13, 2022 Because Doom introduced outdoor areas etc and the term "corridor shooter" no longer sufficed. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Redneckerz Posted November 13, 2022 Doom was such a huge success that subsequent titles that did similar (Hero, episode selection, badass weapons, sci-fi, cheesy storyline) were called the same. It also (in that time) was a sign of technical prowess. If you made a doom clone, your engine was at a certain sophistication. Ofcourse, Chasm: The Rift exists, haha. 6 hours ago, Rudolph said: I do not know how titles work around here. Maybe it is just a custom ironic title? Considering we can change user titles now, probably not. But you can obviously add that and try to ruse someone. 3 hours ago, LadyMistDragon said: I think the mods got sick of the spammy threads, although it's probably just a 30-day vacation or something. Indeed. Even for the low effort, they were low-effort, haha. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

yakfak Posted November 15, 2022 (edited) think it's second-hand embarrassment for Id watching all these other companies appearing and producing precisely their idea but with renamed weapons, sillier main characters, worse maps and less abstract textures. contemporaneous reviewers called stuff street fighter 2 clones, too, cos nothing is as wholesale a rip-off as the neo geo reaction to that game. absolute insular genre redos by sufficiently large companies came perilously close to plagiarism in my eyes! (modern reverent indie stuff by small underfunded teams are a different thing, I don't think Prodeus etc are "doom clones" because they're not made in the same era, or by people with the resources to clone them. you could call them fan games? but that has a dismissive air too. it's not just similarity of genre that makes something a doom clone, it has to be a timely response to get on the bandwagon!) eev Posted November 15, 2022 The concept of calling things a clone of something they share some similarities with isn't something that has gone away, we call any game with permadeath and procedural generation a "roguelike" even if they play nothing like rogue, or every game similar to Metroid a "Metroidvania" even when it has no Castlevania inspiration. Doom was the popular thing at the time and there was no set concept of a "First Person Shooter", so Doom clone was the way to refer to this kind of game while people didn't know what else to call them. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
