wuunds Posted November 16, 2022 I recently started using ChoriumRevA as my MIDI soundfont in GZDoom and I love it a lot. It makes a lot of music just sound way better in my opinion. I'm looking to try out other ones so I'm wondering if anyone uses any soundfonts themselves and have recommendations. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Hisymak Posted November 16, 2022 (edited) I'm an oldschool person who lived his whole childhood with DOS games and an Adlib/Sound Blaster-compatible sound card. I use this for all my time playing Doom or Heretic. That's my answer. Edited November 16, 2022 by Hisymak 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Trar Posted November 16, 2022 I just use an SC-55 soundfont. I'll have to try this enhanced GENMIDI though. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted November 16, 2022 You know, I’ve honestly switched between too many to count over the years. I love the SC-55 family stuff, but there’s some other excellent SF2s out there. Below are some comparisons I made w/ downloads, I think this is presently one of the largest collections of full GM soundfonts on the net right now! And here’s the SC-55 variety pack…! knifeworld Posted November 17, 2022 (edited) YES! Real answer: I usually rotate around a few SC-55 style variants, or I sometimes use GM DLS remastered v2 or RLNDGM. Lately I've been using either ColomboGMGS2 or a recent one called SC-55 zzdenis 0.5. Edited November 17, 2022 by knifeworld mentioned other sf2 i recently tried 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Trar Posted November 17, 2022 This reminds me, the SC-55 soundfont I use is the Patch93 one. I remember posting about finding it after having volume issues with my previous soundfont. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
megakitsu Posted November 17, 2022 Hello, RLNDGM.SF2, seems to work very well for me, I do need to try some of these others mentioned however. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
HorseJockey Posted November 17, 2022 I really like Weeds and Arachno soundfont and the SC-55 by @Trevor0402 I usually bounce around and use whichever one I'm in the mood for though. I don't have a "Main" per-se. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Garlichead Posted November 17, 2022 Alternate between this one and Arachno. ZZ_denis sounds lovely on headphones. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I actually downloaded Trevor0402's SC-55 soundfont instead of Patch93. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
RastaManGames Posted November 18, 2022 I have nice Touhou.SF2, but not sure how can I use it in GZDoom 4.9.0... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheSlipgateStudios Posted November 19, 2022 I usually use either standard or OPL when I want that good ol' DOS feel. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

There should be a soundfonts folder in your GZDoom folder, toss it in there and you should be able to select it from within GZDoom! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
xX_Lol6_Xx Posted November 20, 2022 If what doomkid said still doesn't work, open your gzdoom.ini with any text editor, look for the soundfont directories, and you can simply write Path=path/to/the/soundfont/folder On topic: This take of the SC-55 soundfont, sounds good enough for me 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dweller Dark Posted November 20, 2022 I use 8MbGM_Enhanced18 personally, but it does seem a little loud sometimes in sourceports like Woof or Nugget. Sounds more instrumental, though. I would like to find something better than it, though. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Also, adding a new path under this construction works too: [SoundfontSearch.Directories]Path=$PROGDIR/SoundFonts Nice to find out, 'cause that soundfont has weight of ~250+ Mb and it can be sad to duplicate it to GZDoom's soundfonts folder... P.S.: Actually, "SGM_V2-01.SF2" sounds not bad at all. I mean, there is even some hidden tech sounds in "D_E1M5" and overall quality reminds me of "HD Music Packs" for JDoom and Doomsday... P.P.S: "TimbresOfHeavenGM_GS_XG_SFX_34_Final.SF2" sounds good too, but those moments of "D_E1M5" is very short and kinda loud, I guess... DynamiteKaitorn Posted November 28, 2022 Whatever "General Midi" is. Guessing it's the standard Windows built-In midi soundfont? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Biz! Posted November 28, 2022 General Midi works, but the guitar is terrible. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I decided to try ChoriumRevA myself since I'd never heard of it and wanted to put that high praise to the test. I've played a handful of WADs with it including JPCP and AUGER;ZENITH and It delivers, I think this my new preferred soundfont so thank you! As for others I've used I went looking for a Sega Genesis soundfont because I like the music that console can put out and found "Ultimate Genesis Soundfont". Results with it have been very mixed so I don't run it all the time but when it works it really works. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
