The Truth About OOF!

Like most H.Bomberguy's essays, the video does go somewhere and it is an interesting thesis - in this case, on historicity and the importance of crediting authors in general.

If that's the case, why not provide a synopsis? You have been here long enough to know that posting long-form videos without explanation other than ''Just watch this'' isn't enticing.

Its comparable to a car salesman that just says ''This is the car you need to drive.'' I guess that works for the rich and silly, but most people like to know a little bit more about the car before deciding to take it for a test drive.

The same can be said about your thread. Make it enticing.

If you do not have anything to add to the thread, I would invite you to refrain from commenting altogether.

I am adding criticism to your OP because you are making a mistake you have made several times prior. I understand you don't want that criticism, but here's the catch: Learn from it.

And the video length isn't a problem if you're like me and need something to listen to at work.

I dunno, when i am at work, i am at work.

This has a hypocritical side however, as i am now replying to this at work

I agree, but therein lies the problem: everyone in the thread did a better job of describing the point of the video than the OP himself, who simply created a thread and said "watch this two hour video about a Roblox thing". He provided no explanation or opinion of his own. There is no context or anything else provided, which is why it comes across as a blog post. It would be like if I just randomly posted an interview with Metallica for no reason other than the fact that I watched it.

You should do that, because threads in the bolded style get posted all the time.

Ofcourse you will get snickered for not providing context, but it is totally possible.

You see, I am in agreement with the criticism levelled towards you.

What would have made this a more engaging topic for people to interact with would be a description/explanation of the subject of the video, then followed by the video which would then be followed by a short summary of your thoughts, just as a quick (and quite poor) example:

Quote

The popular "Oof" death sound from the game Roblox (which achieved memetic status due to the absurdity and usability of it in shitposting) was recently removed from the game due to the fact it was lifted directly from an old Interplay title known as Messiah:

What are your thoughts on this? Personally I am bewildered it took so long for people to notice, whilst from an obscure entry, the amount of retro enthusiasts in shitposting circles surely could have noticed sooner.

But that's just how I'd do it. You could certainly go more in depth with thread openers but also it's really not up to me to enforce it.

oof, the vague discussion probes are back.

but ive voluntarily listened to half of this while taking care of my nails so fuck it
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

ive said "tommy tallerico vibes" on at least one occasion, seeing the mess of the amico and this string of bizzare undue self-accreditation, has now lead to codifying The Tommy Tallerico vibe.

guinness records' thing of "pay us to show up, make a record and its rules with you and then see if you can hit it" is what has lead us to the fine folks of twin galaxies, like "Mister Video Home System Cassette Tape Highscore of Donkey Kong in MAME With Noticeable Magnetic Damage possibly Evident Of Tampering (The Gamer Of The Century)" and Todd "I absolutely played 48 consecutive hours of Fast Food by Telesys for the Video Computer System Flawlessly" Rogers (Mister Activision) being recognized as the Top Video Game Players in a potential normie-consciousness. guinness record books are some of the most Bunk ass books of all time. reading unpainted drywall or solid carpet is, on average, a more mentally stimulating and enriching experience. if someone paid guinness records enough, they could be be in print with the "The Most Shitposts In A (time)"

tommy tallerico strikes me as exactly the type of person that owns/owned a Toyota MR2 or Pontiac Fiero with a Ferarrrli body kit (real italo car! source: just trust me). many folk like him strive to be the furthest from humble. goofy ass behavior

As an aside, rob and sean from autechre were credited (thanked, only in ntsc-na release) in metroid prime for the soundtrack that they almost made. probably contributed (although indirectly in the end) more to to the vibe and overall art direction of that game than Ya Might Be Able ta Count 'Em On Yer Fingers (both hands max) sfx our guys Tommy Tallerico Studios made, that could have been used, if they even were. Tommy might be quite salty about that to this day.

Personally I would invite you to not treat "Everything Else" like your personal blog every time you create a new topic. But then I would be an asshole.

You already are.

And newsflash: people have been starting threads to talk about their personal life, ask people what they are watching, playing and listening or even react to someone else's picture profile, but for some reason, you chose to take offense specifically at me sharing a lighthearted and still insightful video about the importance of historicity in video games, all because you have deemed me an "unworthy" poster and you felt like being performatively cruel.

If anything, it is people like you and TheMagicMushroomMan - who for some reason still insists on replying to my posts just to grandstand despite knowing full well that I have blocked him after he basically called me subhuman for being neurodivergent - who have been treating this thread like your personal blog. Again, if you do not feel like watching a video, that is fine, but you do not have to be a dick about it by bragging about not caring.

Jesus fucking Christ. Imagine doing that to Lee Jackson whenever he asks feedback on his latest album or shares personal health updates...

Anyway, to the other commenters who have been willing to engage with the topic at hand in good faith, thank you.

Bull fucking shit my man, I have the exact message you sent me (about half a year ago, I won't bother to check) and the exact message I sent as a response - not once did I say anything about you being neurodivergent. How the hell was I even supposed to know that anyway? You also strangely accused me of making fun of you for not being a native English speaker, even though I've never once complained about your grammar - only your behavior. I have never made fun of anyone's mental illness or health conditions for as long as I've been on the internet. Absolutely shameful of you.

Do you really want to do this drama show in public? This is why people here have a problem with you - because you have a problem with everyone else. Everyone is an asshole according to you. You don't have "good faith" in anyone who even remotely disagrees with you or challenges you on anything. Every other thread you're in you accuse someone of being cruel to you. I don't even know why you're here if you think we're all out to get you. The fact that you're comparing this thread to Lee Jackson's health updates only shows how full of yourself you really are.

Normally I would not make a post like this in public, but I will not let you lie about me and tell people that I've said things I've never said. You are colossally full of shit.

I know you want a conversation about the video, but the whole video doesn't really seem cohesive into what its subject matter should be based on observations from others.  Moreover, the whole point of the damn thing could have been summarized with other videos that have been out for more than 5 years, let alone some google search.  I do not want to watch some meandering piece of "content" for the origin of something I don't even care about, let alone discuss the merits of why we should have to endure this whole video for some piece of rather useless trivia.

Oh, and just dropping a video link without even conveying your own thoughts about it isn't really a great way to have a good faith discussion since you're not setting any context for anything beyond slogging through some 2 hour monologue from someone we never knew the name of, and nobody will know the name of in 3 years.

I do not care about Roblox myself; in fact, I am still not even sure I understand what it is. However, as a video game history buff, I feel that it is important to preserve and share knowledge about even seemingly insignificant details that we tend to take for granted like who created a specific sound effect. The Doom community has taught me as much. Frankly, even if H.Bomberguy had not gone on a tangent about Tommy Tallarico and his antics, I would have still shared this video. I mean, did you even know about Messiah? I sure did not. I am not sure I would like it, but the core gameplay loop reminds me a lot of playing as Paxton Fettel in F3AR, a definitely flawed game that I enjoyed very much nonetheless.

I am surprised by the negative reaction to the post. Especially given the fact that most negative reactions come from people who didn't watch the video and don't even plan to. Weird stuff, you guys.

The video is awesome. I watched all of it and it's an incredible documentary that goes in an absolutely unexpected direction. As is usual with hbombers essays, it's one I'm likely to be rewatching several times. Great work and I really like how he manages to put this into a greater context of the culture of not crediting original artists.

p.s.: the video is NOT about Roblox, by the way. The video is about the origins of the sound made popular by Roblox and is about old games and sfx artists in old games. So, this is a totally appropriate post for this forum.

You were able to spend two hours watching that video but not 5 minutes reading through people stating very plainly why they reacted the way they did?

See, this - This - is exactly why you get the reaction you so vehmently despise. By being either thinly veiled or otherwise plain ignoring obvious things, this gets dragged on and on. Especially against users who clearly are not what you subtly say they are.

Oh cut that victim-playing role. You get criticized for your post because you are a airdropping a 2 hour video without any summary or synopsis and because this isn't the first time you do this. If you can't comprehend that the forum isn't a personal blog or Twitter feed and threads needs to have some cohesion in order to function - Then what's the point?

No, not basically, Facts. And fact is that (publically, atleast) you aren't called subhuman.

Imagine that indeed. Luckily for you, these comparisons aren't made.

To who are you talking? but to answer, as its apparently a general question: Yes, i did. It is from Shiny who also did Sacrifice. Back in the early 2000, it was a pretty hyped up game owing to the graphical prowess the game would possess.

@RudolphVideos are a bit tricky as thread-starters, especially two-hour ones. I've admittedly posted some bad thread openings with videos before, where I've dropped a new movie trailer at the start and said basically nothing about it---even though people will obviously give their opinions and have a discussion, it's still a bad lead-in for a thread, even for a video as short as a movie trailer. On those occasions, I should've at least devoted a paragraph or so to the video in question at the outset.

When you're talking about a two hour video, this rings even more true. You can't just drop a couple sentences about the topics within, and give some general opinion about how it's interesting. Presumably, you'd already watched the entire video when posting the thread? In that case, you should probably devote a few paragraphs to talking about the video. I'm not saying you should touch on every topic the video does, but go into detail about why you think it's interesting, hit a few main bullet points of the video and give your thots/prayers/conspiracy theories, even if it's in a stream of consciousness fashion. @heliumlamb seems to be the first person in the thread who has watched part of the video and come back here with some proper thoughts of their own. Maybe use that as a frame of reference.

For an example of where I think I did at least a *passable* job of opening a thread with videos, look at the Dead Space Remake thread I posted a while back. If you want to discuss a video that's essentially a lengthy essay, you should probably aim to have at least 3-4 times the amount of text and additional thoughts I gave at the outset of that thread.

Just my thoughts and feedback from my time on this forum, hope it's been helpful.

Was the initial post really that bad, or is this just a poster people don't like and want to pile on? It seemed fine to me. It doesn't lay out the whole video, but it describes the central thesis of the video, that it's not just about some sound effect from a game, that it has some relevance to video game history (which may be of some interest to a forum about a 30 year old video game!) and Tommy Tallarico is well-known enough in the gaming industry that I think it's reasonable to assume some people here may have heard of him before.

Maybe it should just be left to sink if it's really of such little interest to the forum?

Unfortunately Rudolph has a habit of making enemies. He views anything even slightly critical as a personal attack and one of the mods said his current ignore list currently numbers some 73 users or something. With his track record it unfortunately means people are more likely to react negatively.

Anyone with that many people, on a ignore list, should really consider if this community is right for them.

Although I can't actually confirm that number is correct, doesn't seem to be an option to check that, it seems a tad excessive.

Anyway, locking this one up since it was never on the rails to begin with.
