Redemption Denied - Revamped

And here we go, the very last Psx Doom level, Redemption Denied is here and has been revamped!

 

For the first time I can say that this took me less than expected x) Probably because I felt quite inspired, be it for the fact that this is the iconic final level for Psx Doom, be it because the devil gave me the right spark.

I went quite heavy on the fancy stuff with this map, especially with the scripting, but hey, the vanilla map was really too blend D: even the encounters were plain and not very "charismatic".

Of course, as a kid I found this level gorgeous, cause I could finally face a new menacing enemy boss, big mama spider (yeah, no other masterminds around in the psx version if I remember correctly), so I wanted to give justice to this final battle and make it so that everyone could find the excitement of fighting a new hideous enemy...

Yeah, you read it right! New boss for this map! (technically is not new, is a complete rip-off from my megawad with some minor tweaks, but it still new stuff!)

I broke my few rules again, but not much, just a couple of 3d floors for a better encounter and visual experience :D cough* and hundreds of lines of scripts cough*

 

Important Note:

For this map the Render Mode MUST be HARDWARE ACCELERATED! or the starting sequence can break!

 

First things first, as always, thanks to PlayStation Doom TC for the original map, music and sounds!

 

 

My goal here was to create a very dark and oppressive atmosphere, while at the same time throw the player into the beast jaws (quite literally), having demons attacking from every corner while the map reveal the hell's strongest foes.

So, you know it, hard as fk, unless you're able to properly use and time your resources.

 

 

The usual (and more) changes I made to make it feel even better (hopefully):

  • Reduced Lost Souls hp.
  • DECALDEFS for torches, candles and health and armor bonuses.
  • Nightmare Spectre and Nightmare Imp.
  • New metal and black and white marble flats, purple blood, white marble, marble face, lava fall.
  • Breakable poles and lamps.
  • Invisibility powerup has been reworked.
  • Famine boss.
  • Floating candles.
  • Archviles can be targeted by other monsters.

 

Some of these changes has been directly ported from my megawad D.N.A., link below.

Port : GZDoom 4.8.2 (it uses GZDoom features, so it shouldn't be compatible with anything else)

Map Format : UDMF

Cooperative 2-4 Player : Player starts only (I actually cannot test it for cooperative, so I don't really know how it works)

Difficulty Settings : Every Difficulty Implemented 

Jump : Not Allowed

Crouch : Not Allowed

Editor(s) used : Ultimate Doom Builder, Slade3

Known Bugs : Barons can wake up if the player shoots in the starting area

The 'tower of babel' that isn't really a tower at all. Really curious to see how you salvage that mess XD

Here's a video of my first attempt. I can do better, but I think I spent too many resources, and my use of the Invuln was a terrible waste. Still though, there didn't seem to be much health left to take on the boss.

 

 

 

EDIT: I did much better the second time, with a better strategy and conservation of resources. Still didn't figure out the missing secret, though.

You know, the level has a really kick ass name. Redemption Denied, it sounds so edgy (the good one) and badass, like: Heres your redemption... DENIED!
However in Williams who came up with that name should deserve a prize...

Now speaking of the map, you really made it justice to his name. Now it looks like a serious... REDEMPTION DENIED!!!!

But theres one thing that bugs me...

As a side note, is funny how in this image the mutilated body of the left looks like it has his 2 legs way open. lol

I played on lzdoom and it seemed to work out fine. Gotta say it was one hell of a shit show the entire map. Visuals were gorgeous. I especially liked the octopus in the sky. Looked awesome. I pretty much cheesed as much as i could. Telefragged all four archies just by repeatedly stepping in an out of teleporters till they were all dead. Then i let infighting take care of most of the mob while i concentrated on the pain elementals. Saved the invuln for the boss and thankfully got him under half health with it using plasma before just pumpin the rest of my rockets into him. Had to get his last 11 health with my shotgun and had something like 8 health myself when he died. Wow that was really on hell of a fight. Thanks for making it. 😀

Yeah, the archviles might look tricky and very annoying, but they can be telefragged :D

About the second secret, you went really close in both attempts, but watching the gameplay, I see that it definitely is too hidden to be spotted especially while in the middle of the fights

You have to shoot at the opened eye switch that is in between the 2 pillars with the megasphere and the amplification goggles, but it's quite high, so I might be lower it and increase the light level

Ahahah you might be right, in the screenshot looks kinda off, like a glitch.
I thought the freaking same thing about the mutilated body after I took the screenshot, at first I thought it was a new psx texture that I've missed x)

Great to know it also works on lzdoom and thank you for the playthrough and words!
You basically used all of the intended cheesy strategies I had in mind while I made the encounters :D
Except for the boss weakness I think  >:)

Hell Gate was originally called Tower of Babel in the Jaguar port, hence the slash between.
