The title pretty much says it all.

I am (possibly others are too) looking for some good and inspiring music to listen to when trying to come up with the best design and setups for Doom maps :)

Generally Vaporwave for these sessions.

or sometimes, a mix of other Doom streamers who are on, OR one of our local radio stations discussing current affairs. Weird I know, but makes me feel in touch with the world still hahaha

I tend to listen to MIDIs or minimalist electronica, and nothing too "busy" sounding. The extended versions of the Doom soundtracks on youtube are quite good for this.

latest endeavour is getting into all that nineties post-hardcore like unwound, leading up to getting into 2000s math rock in earnest rather than just being able to name-drop it

Not quite mapping, but I've definitely listened to Unwound albums when recording demos.

In addition to t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者, one half of the artists who made the 2184 series of albums I posted above, I'd also like to mention NxxxxxS, EASTGHOST, and kudasai as I have enjoyed listening to their works equally as much and the results of my mapping sessions have been inspired and influenced by all of them.

I usually use a combination of my regular music playlist (Pretty wide net of styles starting with 80's pop songs all the way to modern electronic music based genres) + the one midi in the wad.

It's incredible how much Ulver's music style changed over the years.

My reply won't answer the initial post, but I try as much as possible to listen to the music I plan to use in my map. The music is an integral part of the level design which is planned in advance if possible. Listening to it while mapping helps to get into the swing of things and to know the pace to adopt regarding the map.

In a deep mapping session, I can listen to the same music for hours.

Now, I will throw my recommandation for you :

Almost anything from Falcom games works as good background music for any creative thing I find myself doing. I've been putting together a playlist of lots of their music that would make for good map BGM, and I have made MIDI arrangements for a few of these as well.

Ah Falcom, one of the few companys that used the Yamaha XG format. Battle theme from Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes is badass.

I mean, I know they used it for some of their MIDI albums in the mid-90s, but outside of that it seems like they just stuck to GS or GM format. At least that means the songs from their early Windows titles are easily rippable >:)

Yup, most japanese used GS and GM and before that LA (MT-32) for games (Sharp X68k is the prime example), I think that Roland format was more popular (and close to the GM) than XG. In fact, the GM2 is based on GS format. But they used XG in PCE CD Games, iirc YS 3 CD was composed with a MU2000EX, and I'm 80% sure that Legend of Heroes CD too.

As a fun fact: Square was another company who used XG in his games (FF7 & 8 for PC, although that midis where made by Yamaha itself, sounds like it came out from PS1, great quality)

Yamaha XG MIDI modules came out WAY after the Ys and Legend of Heroes PCE CD games (and the MU2000EX specifically didn't come out until the year 2000). A majority of those OSTs were made using synths and drum machines of the late 80s, like the Korg M1, Roland R-8, D-50 and Yamaha DX7. And that's just the ones that Hudson Soft did the ports for. Falcom's own Legend of Xanadu PCE CD games mostly just used Roland synths from what I can tell. I think there was SOME incorporation of sounds from Yamaha MU modules in Falcom's early Windows games, but I don't really know enough to verify for certain.
Also, I realize the thread is getting a bit off-topic, so I'll stop here. Sometimes I can't help but be a huge nerd about old synths. :P

Oh yeah, you're right, the first MU didn't came out until 94 (and even that one wasn't XG yet) and the PCE CD games came out in first in 1991-92, I don't know why I came up with that conclusion, I remember reading that YS 3 used a Yamaha MU for music probably The Oath in Felghana? but I remember hearing a Yamaha drum samples on Legend of Heroes, so probably from a older sample (TX16W or a another synth with similar samples maybe?) Yup, this is getting into the the Off-Topic realm, sooo I will stop here too. :P
